OT - SweaterVest Speech at Halftime Last Saturday
doesn't erase being as ass to a kid...
Absolutely it does. He made a mistake, owned up to it, and apologized in front of everyone.
seems like a genuinely decent fellow. Too bad I hate him anyways.
You know, in a way I hate him, but sometimes I respect him so much it's hard. I don't care if this is heresy or not, but if that story is true, it is awesome. It would be nice to think that OSU fans at the very least hated-but-still-respected Lloyd Carr for similar reasons, but I doubt that is the case.
I never hated Carr. I hated Cooper, then when Tressel came, there was no reason to hate Carr. I did respect Carr, though.
I really hope he retires soon.
shucks Mr. Tressel you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore
I like my amphetamines theory better.
Pretty intense, I may not like the man, but he lit a fire under my ass and I'm just bored at work.
some of Rich's speeches. I can think of 3-4 games this year. Definitely Illinois.
that Rodriguez can light a fire like Tressel can.
Now if he can shore up our defense, we can start the UM Football Pain Train and smoke some fools!
Choo choooooo! The pain train cometh!
..."Hey... Our helmets got wings. C'mon..."
Uh huh. That is not a man I want to see angry, and definitely not a man I would want angry at me. I might soil myself if it happened.
If I were in the student assistant's shoes, I would have liked to pull this picture out of my pocket and hand it to Coach Tressel. In fact I'm going to print it out now and carry it in my wallet in case one day I need to use it.
He should have said, "if you don't want to have to wear a sweatervest for the rest of your life, get out there and win this game!!"
I met Tressel after he got the gig in Columbus but before his first game at OSU. Lloyd was speaking here in Cleveland at a high school football awards banquet and Tressel and his now late mother attended. My then 15 year old son went with me and we sat a table filled with Northern Ohio Wolverines for the speech. After Lloyd finished they started showing a highlight video of the high school kids so my son and I snuck out as it was getting late. We did so at the same time Tressel and his mom were leaving and my son and Mrs. Tressel both had to use the bathroom at the same time so Jim and I were standing there, me wearing my Michigan polo and the soon to be new coach of OSU. I said "congrats coach, I hope you go 12-1 every year." He said "me too, but I don't want to lose the one you want me to lose." Then we proceeded to talk football for about 15 minutes and he was one of the nicest and friendliest persons I've ever met. He invited my too skinny son to come to Columbus and gave me his cell phone number and said I should call him if i'm ever down his way and want a tour of the stadium. In short he was VERY nice to someone he didn't need to be nice to and I thought immediately "ut oh.....we're in trouble if this guy can coach at all."
Unfortunately for us he can coach and well as recruit. Extremely well.
That's a great story. He's a great coach and I certainly respect him a great deal*. I would hope most sane Michigan fans would agree.
*- ugh 8-1
That sucks. Hearing that makes it harder for me to hate him.
why should I care what a guy I can't stand says to a team I can't stand?
I don't know. You don't have to care if you don't want to. I thought it was interesting to read about something I otherwise would have never known. I guess to throw a question back at you, after reading the title, what made you care enough to click the link?
I would have a hard time as a player in that room paying attention to Tressel, what with him wearing that silly sweater vest. My mind would definitely wander . . . I'd ask myself: "Why would someone take a perfectly fine sweater and cut the sleeves off?"
Maybe he's just trying to be like his idol, only nerdier:
So what you're saying is, Jim Tressel experiences emotions? Huh, never would have guessed...
That is all.
"We spent all week with brave men & women that have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice...they are here today as guests and we honor their service with a horse (bleep) performace like that?"
"We are not losing this game. Absolutely not. Every single time we lose to that team, t-shirts are made. Not here, not today."
Great stuff. When we get good again, these games are going to be epic.
Every single time we lose to that team, t-shirts are made. Not here, not today."
I would say that would be a good way for RRod to start the pregame speech for next year's MSU game.
I couldn't agree more.
that will make a W in Cbus that much more rewarding. You can't deny that that team has been the class of the B10 on the field, and beating them will signal everybody that we are on our way back. All titles will run through Ann Arbor from then on
He took me hostage and proceeded to rob a bank. He held me at gunpoint with an Uzi and a shiv and barked orders in language so profane it'd make Mike Barwis blush. He shot three women, I think they were nuns. When the teller gave him the bag full of money, he proceeded to demand that the guy go through all of the bags and remove any two-dollar bills. While he waited, he built a makeshift altar out of a nearby toys-for-tots display and set it on fire while worshipping the devil and carving pentagrams on the foreheads of senior citizens. He made fun of a mentally-challenged child that had been in line, and even removed some mattress tags from a bed that inexplicably sat nearby. At some point he also admitted to killing JFK, John Lennon, Woody Hayes, Michael Jackson and Pat Tillman. He then dumped all of the money into a wicker basket that was actually an old Andy Katzenmoyer college project, and deposited a huge amount of the money into Kirk Herbstreit's Swiss bank account to finally pay off the Les Miles Incident. And when it was finally time for him to leave, he threw me on the sidewalk and laughed about discussing this during his next lecture on Tuesday before making his getaway in a Japanese-made car driven by Mike Rosenberg.
And for some strange reason, it never made the papers.... not even the local Youngstown Vindicator, whose editor, photographer and top three writers were in the line just behind me. Explain that.
Damn your story is way cooler than mine.
There, now you have an explanation!
My favorite part was him ripping off the mattress tags
Well done, boss
The seems somewhat unlikely. I'd think he'd use an actual knife instead of a shiv.
I was given a peek at the vest he was given by Nike for The Game. Black Friday edition...
Boys, if we don't win this game the cash, the cars, and the women are all going to be taken away from you! (SARCASM INTENDED!)
Does the guy have any faults, except coaching the enemy? I mean at least Woody was easy to despise, being a dick and all. SweaterVest? FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU! I'm sorry....
EDIT: sorry this was a reply to an above anecdote.
From the get-go I pictured Tressel saying: "BLUE! WHY IS THERE NO ICE IN MY LEMONADE!?"
As I have told people before, I have great respect for JT and the Ohio State program. I am probably going to get negged to death for this but I do. Granted, I want to beat them every year and I hate that he is 8-1 against us, but the respect is still there. People question me when I don't cheer for Ohio State to lose, and when I say I want them to be a good team. The reason the Michigan vs Ohio State rivalry is this big is because both teams have a great tradition, and field winners. If one teams is awful, it diminishes the importance of a great rivalry. I hate Ohio State as much as any Michigan fan but within that hate is a feeling of mutual respect that I think makes this rivalry so special. Great halftime speech by JT, they sure played like they had something to prove in the second half too.
It's not about Tressel, and it's not about the players either. It's the fanbase that makes it all so loathe-worthy. Bunch a' morans. Douchenozzles. Douchenuggets.
The fan base can be a bit much, however a lot of fan bases could say that. I know some Michigan "fans" who I am embarrassed to call Michigan fans. However, when it comes to the football team, the coach, and the institution they are a class act imho.
Doucheberries. Kinda like a dingleberry, kinda not.
I HATE NOT BEING ABLE TO HATE TRESSEL
But I can not hate Tressel. I've said it before, but I think the guy is class and I have a great deal of respect for him. That being said, I hate that we have not beat them in forever.
JT asked the captains to walk to the center of the room and face a mirror
Then JT proceeded to reenact the dance Buffalo Bill did in Silence of the Lambs.
Seriously I'm one of the people who want them to go 11-1 every year and it hard to hate the Vest but damn did he sell his soul or something with his record.
PS at least he didn't throat punch the young lady ala Woody style.
Tressel (looking in the mirror): "Would you fuck me? I'd fuck me."
But OSU has already came out and said this was fake. It was reported on Columbus radio yesterday.
Stop ruining my fun.
It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again.
[to his dog, Precious]
Just want to make sure people don't have a reason to like Warden Tressel... we can all go back to hating him again.
Now it is out and better than the truth. Recruits and their parents will see this crap and further allow the legend to grow. Had RR done this, Drew Sharp would have started writing about some form or harassment charges against RR, etc...
Please never post anything like this again.
I prefer my pre-existing opinions of the school, the team, and the coach.
(I can't believe I'm actually going to say this) The sweatervest actually seems like a decent human. I was somewhat inspired by the retelling of his speech, and I wanted OSU to lose. If only he approached the Michigan game more like Cooper, I wouldn't feel so bad for feeling this way.
I can't wait til we play them this year. But Wiscy is first!
But it's a hoax.
It's cliched bullshit like that speech makes me glad I never played fooball and felt obligated, as "Cam" did, to say "I see a guy not playing to his potential." Ugh.
In 2004, Jim Tressel allowed the Michigan football team to be detained and had all of it's baggage and players went over by bomb sniffing dogs. Tressel seems classy but he's not.
When asked during the Maurice Clarret issue if he was aware of the ariticles published about the issue his response was "I have not read the article." As one writer at the time pointed out, he never said he didn't know what was in the article.
Please also check out this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/03/sports/ncaafootball/03tressel.html?_r=1&ref=jim_tressel&pagewanted=print
So let's not talk about how wonderful he is. He is like so many politicians out there, carefully parsing his language and operating often just barely inside the rules.
Good reminder that class is judged based on actions, not words!
coach gave stirring half time speech.
players played better as a result.
heard it before, and i still hate tressel.
but that was pretty fucking bad-ass, if true.
seems like the kind of guy to have some deep dark fetishes he keeps hidden at home.
As much as I hate to admit it, he is classy and respectful to others. I am sure behind closed doors he can be mean and rude just like anyone else. I hat ethe school he represents and the team he coaches, alway have and always will, but I find myself liking the person that is the coach of that team down south.
Any coach that can turn around a piss-poor effort like OSU's 1st half last week deserves some respect. I also think he respects Michigan and The Game. So much so, I don't think he would tarnish it's legacy by running up the score or embarassing Michigan or its coach. I think the 42-7 drubbing the was the most lopsided score he has put up on Michigan since he's been at OSU. I was at last year's Game and it seemd like he took his foot off the gas a little in the second half. I think he knows that there can be no rivalry if there's no competition. He would never do what Bielema did the last couple of weeks.
I think Bielema would try to bury us if he got the chance. He would go for two in the fourth quarter up by three scores if he got the chance. I want to beat Wisconsin so bad tomorrow, so there is more attention on The Game and not just another game for OSU at home.
These two games are a perfect opportunity for this team to show how good of a coach RR is and what these players are made of. Winning the last two might send MSU to the Rose Bowl, but it would be awesome to have the chance for a 10-win season in a bowl game, a News Years Day bowl game.
Go Blue Bo IS watching
Doesn't surprise me this is fake. It doesn't sound like something Tressel would say at all. The guy is not as nice a guy as you think. Total douche move in (02 not 04 itauditbill) with the dogs. I hate the guy as a person, but also because he actually does a good job at getting his team motivated for the michigan game, unlike jc did. See the "Michigan is nothing" quote by Terry Glenn. You'd never hear that today.
Columbus sports radio is less informed than an average free message board.
My friend's brother was a back up placekicker at OSU and I've gotten to talk with him a few times. Tressel wrote the guy a recommendation for a post in the Navy Seals. From what I've heard from him Tressel sounds like a class act. He did admit, though, that allowing Devin Barclay on the team was "probably illegal."
I'll probably lose several hundred (or thousand) MGoPoints for this, but here goes...
Fuck Jim Tressel.
Many of our faithful are trying to appear "cultured" and "sophisticated" by complimenting him. There are likely many Michiganders who think that simple human decency should take precendent over our longstanding rivarly.
Fuck that noise.
I hate JIm Tressel with every fiber of my being. He could exhibit the spirit of Christ incarnate, and as long as he is coaching the scarlet and gray he is naught but a cancer upon the Big Ten and mankind in general.
Fuck Jim Tressel. Fuck his team. Fuck his philosophy. Fuck his insistence on "Big Ten ball" and "power wins". Fuck his entire family and the state in which he lives.
I am as educated and as 'sophisticated' as anyone on this board, but I wish nothing but the worst for the state of Ohio and their head football coach.
