OT- Suter/Parise/Semin/Nash Watch (AKA Free Agency Day 3)

Submitted by MGoPietrowski on

Alot of BIG names still out there. I suppose that this is the last day we'll do this whole open thread thing, as the hockey hating contingent of the MGoCommunity will likely wake from their slumber to both neg bang this post and take extra time out of their day just to let us know how they feel.

However, skaters gonna skate.

Four big time players are hanging in the hockey atmosphere, will the Red Wings bring any of them home? Any big surprises?

Please, help me get my mind off of this massive pile of work on my desk and the agonizing possibility of our Wunderkind Trouba leaving us for the always dickish OHL.

Happy free agency, puck heads..

EDIT: Well, it's lunchtime and nothing very sexy has happened.

Free Agents:

Suter: No announcement, high probability he's a Wing.

Parise: Many think he's leaning towards PIT or MIN, but who knows?

Semin: No word as of yet.

Trade Bait:

Nash: Concerning reports and tweets, Detroit is on his "approved" list, but it may just cost the franchise to bring him to the D

Ryan: Not much has been said here, either.

Someone posted that a very possible outcome could be signing Suter and Semin, and then making a trade for Ryan out of Anaheim. Thoughts? Who would we let go of?

Since twitter is the source of all knowledge, Suter is pretty much a done deal to the Wings.

I just hope the Michigan hockey summer doesn't start including the Wings in its despondence.

The more I think about it, the more I see Semin going back to Russia.  The guy is talented, don't get me wrong, but he just doesn't seem to have that drive.  The KHL isn't quite as talent-heavy as the NHL, so he could dominate, and Russia is his home.  I wouldn't be unhappy if the Wings signed him, per se, but I think I would have rather had Hudler stick around than bring in Semin.

Of course, all this is null if we sign Parise and Suter, then it doesn't matter who else we get.

No chance in hell!  That's why I'm ok with letting Hudler go, he's worth about $3 mil/year.  Good for him that he's getting paid, I'm happy it's not the Wings doing it.  Sammy should be a good replacement for him.

I think just as interesting will be where do some of the other dominoes fall after Parise and/or Suter sign, particularly guys like Matt Carle and Bobby Ryan. As a Blackhawks fan, I'm not expecting any major splashes but I would love a guy like Matt Carle

I can't say I agree but when you really think about it it's hard to not at least think about it. Certainly Carle will come at a lower (even if only slightly) price than Suter, and although there's no doubt as to Suter's ability, you have to wonder what he'd be without Weber at his side. Just food for thought, because all that said, I'd still rather have Suter

While Weber is certainly more adept offensively than, say, Nik Kronwall, I don't think playing with Kronwall will be a huge step down whatsoever from playing with Weber.  Kronwall is a smart player, and will be a great complement to Suter (assuming the Wings sign him, and that he's paired with Kronwall).

I think you are alone there.  I guess the one reason I could see wanting Carle is because he will come cheaper than Suter, though I don't think it will be by much. Also, +/- isn't a great hockey stat, at least IMHO.  I like that Suter spends more time on the ice.

I think Suter is definitely option number 1, but if the Wings were to miss out on him, I would definitely want Carle.

Did you watch Carle in the playoffs this year? There's really no comparison between he and Suter. Suter is widely regarded as a top 10 defenseman around the league, while Carle was the subject to a lot of criticism for his play in the playoffs this year for the Flyers. The only reason Carle is going to get paid, is it's such a shallow year for UFR defenseman. Those numbers are inflated because he plays with Claude GIroux, who's arguably the most talented 2 way foward in the game right now save Pavel Datsyuk and Sidney Crosby. Not to mention, didnt he play with Pronger 2 seasons ago?

I like your argument, but it is a tough call. +/- is more important to a defensemen than most people think. It ties into a good first pass out of your own zone, opposing forwards being frustrated, and your lines confidence when you are leading them. It is less important if you aren't the ring leader of the line.

If the Wings land Suter, and K-Hol works his magic on a trade deal for Rick Nash, i think this will have been a nasty good free agency for the winged wheels...

I honestly have no idea with Parise anymore. Clearly someone threw in a last ditch effort and it at least got him a little bit uneasy. I also think that he deep down really doesn't want to leave NJ, but can they pay him? He has had Brodeur talk to him a couple times yesterday and after the run they had this year he may be emotionally attached. With hockey and football players it's not uncommon to see guys stick around with a team for a long time despite being able to get more money somewhere else. With Suter I feel like it is between the Wing's and Nashville. My guy tells me that if he was going to stay with Nashville he would have already signed. But what do I know it would be very interesting to be a fly on the wall in all of these negotiating rooms.

Anyone else really like this signing? He's battled alcoholism most his career, is clean now (lots of personal troubles, feel sorry for him). We needed some grit in our bottom 6 fowards and he's one of the most feared hitters in the game right now.

He really is a little turd, and you absolutely hate him when he's wearing the other jersey. But I grew up playing hockey with a little guy named John VanCleave. He was about two feet shorter than anybody else, always pestering, talking trash, tenaciously relentless and quick to get under your fingernails. I HATED playing against him. But one year, he was moved on to our team. When we got the news, the whole locker room got in a bad mood and didn't want him. However, it only took one game to realize how fun/exciting it can be to have a little firecracker like that on your side. The only reason I am wary, and that I can understand others not liking him, is that he does take myriad dumb penalties. Between the 2 stupid offensive zone penalties per game we can always count on Abdelkader/Holmstrom/Franzen for, this could be the feather that breaks the camels back. We saw from this years playoffs that you can't spend half of the game in the penalty box and expect to win.

But, if he recognizes the opportunity here, to reinvent himself as both fiesty AND disciplined, and to be accepted and praised by the greatest hockey fans in the lower 48, he could work out to be a great, great signing...

I do. I absolutely hated him while on the preds, but he's the kind of guy that works hard, pisses off opposing players, and draws penalties. Not going to score a lot but that's not his role. He's good at what he does and will be a solid piece for this team.

I like the signing, but I am cautious with it as well. I can't remember him doing too much against the Wing's and I believe he had some injury problems so maybe that kept him a little limited. I don't want to see him deliver any cheap shots as well, it's one thing to play physical, but I don't want to see any Raffi Torres type hits. The plus side as well is that if someone comes charging in at Jimmy or any other "star" Tootoo is the type of player that wouldn't have to be told to make that guy answer the bell and that is something we have been missing.

Just get Suter then go from there. I like the other guys we've signed but there is obviously still a need on defense. If we lock up Suter then I hope we can still get a top 6 forward, preferably without, as someone put earlier, giving up 4 of Jupiter's moons. Tootoo is a good player who will be a pain in the ass for other teams and Sammy should be more than enough of a replacement for Hudler. Ideally we would get Parise without giving anything up, but that's unlikely. Next on my wish list is Bobby Ryan because he wouldn't be as pricey as Nash. If we get Suter and one of those guys I'll be doing backflips though.

I think if Doan finds out the Yotes are staying in Phoenix, he isn't going anywhere.  I hated when the Wings played against the prick, he gets under fans' skin.  I would love to have him on the Wings, though.

brandanomano

Wouldn't mind Doan at all. Havent seen him play too much since I never watch the coyotes, but he almost killed us in the playoffs a few years ago and seems to play with a ton of passion and energy, and has talent to go with that. You can never have enough guys like that.

The 5 years I lived in Phoenix taught me to hate the Coyotes.  So much in fact, that they surpassed the Blackhawks and the Avalanche as my most despised team.  So, while Shane Doan is a heck of a player that almost any team would love to have, I'd rather not have the captain of the Coyotes defect to the Wings.

I still don't get why everybody is that upset about the length of the suspension being reduced. The suspension was originally set at 25 games to make sure Torres didn't return to the playoffs (the hit happened in Game 3 of the first round, so Phoenix hypothetically could have had 25 more playoff games after that if they made the finals and every series went to 7 games). Additionally, Shanny had said before the playoffs that since playoff games were more important, suspensions would be weighted appropriately (roughly something that would be 3 games in the regular season would only get 1 in the playoffs). So it's only natural that they would re-evaluate things upon appeal after seeing how many playoff games he actually missed. If Phoenix had lost in the 1st round, he'd probably be serving the full 25. Had they made the finals or had some series run longer, you'd probably be seeing more get knocked off. But I'm sure that under the CBA they can't just come out with the ruling "you're banned for the rest of the post-season, and maybe some next season depending on how your team does, we'll get back to you on that".

We need a goal scorer.Doan only gives you 15-20 goals a year.If we wanted that then they should of kept Hudler.I dont think Doans an option at this point.Just my opinion.

I'd love to get Parise, but I don't know if it'll happen. What we really need is to stay healthy, we do that we've got as good a shot as anyone to come out of the west.
