OT: Support US World Cup Bid

Submitted by speakeasy on
For the folks of soccer persuasion around here, of which I am one, you should all take a second and sign the USA bid petition so that US Soccer can show FIFA that we are worthy of the WC on an indivdual fan level. I happen to think it's a little silly given that USA '94 holds the all time attendence record, but what do I know. I'm all about the US getting the World Cup and if the people in charge think that this helps, then I'm all over it. http://www.gousabid.com/page/s/sticker/

I can't support soccer inroads into the United States. I coach football, and by appealing to mommies that don't want their boys to roughhouse, and exerting political control over the fields and finances, suburban soccer advocates have overtly tried to kill football in America (particularly at the youth level). Kids that come out of hardcore soccer programs have the worst attitudes of any kids I coach. I also don't have any time for a sport where faking injuries is a crucial part of the strategy.

I know we're going to bid for 2018 but I just think it's too soon for us. There a lot of soccer-crazy countries out there that have been waiting a lot longer to host the WC.

I fully agree that we have money and resources. That has nothing to do with my argument. My question is whether it's fair to return the event to the U.S. barely a quarter-century later after the first time. The World Cup shouldn't just be about making a killer profit.

But it also needs not to create a killer loss, a la South Africa. Since the US has hosted it (and through a hypothetical 2018 date in the States), the WC will have been in France, Korea/Japan, Germany, South Africa, and Brazil. That is every continent, including Europe twice, except for Australia. FIFA theoretically tries to rotate the continents so next up in the rotation is us or Australia. The front runner for the 2018/2022 date that we don't land is England, which makes three European visits since North America last had one.

It's too bad the Big House and Ann Arbor are out of the bid. Would have been awesome to see Michigan Stadium filled for the World Cup. Plus I could have bought tickets for it and went myself!

will be in Mexico before its in the United States again for North America. I would expect China to put up a bid soon, with returns to Italy and Spain before another US host.
