The duration of a shot in basketball is limited by gravity—you can only keep it in the air so long.  On the other hand, a puck can leave a stick continue for a much longer time than any possible NBA shot.

overturned but I agree if the puck is still on play it should still be live even with the buzzer but sadly this was just a little hundredth of a second short but its still a positive sign for our offense! Datsyuk has woken up and I'm looking for him or Franzen to score the tying goal. Heads up Preds. Detroit now has life!

It's a pretty arbitrary rule decision if you have the ability to easily discern if the ball/puck is in the net as time expires.
