OT: Summer Travel Plans
I'm headed to Charleston, SC for the first time tomorrow for a wedding and have some free time to spend. Anyone have any recommendations for what to do in the area (besides golf) or places to eat?
Also, the summer travel thread is a popular one every year, so use this thread to get travel advice or what have you. I'm sure people will get pissy when someone humble brags about how they just can't decide which one of their properties to summer at, but whatevs.

4 months? I assume this isn't just some backpacking trip. I guess you'll see the whole country with that time, but Chiang Mai is a must. And try kao soi there, it's a northern specialty. All Thai food is absolutely amazing, definitely my favorite food. The only bad meal I can think of was some tom yum soup with way too much lemongrass, and I've spent about about 2 and a half months there in all. Pai is the best place if you really wanna relax in the highlands. Not much to do but nice to hang out. Ko Phangan is the party island or if you go to some of the other beaches around there where you need a boat to get there, there's plenty of relaxing. And if you want a party that's not like the crazy stuff at Haad Rin, Eden is right around the corner by boat. Ko Samui is the diving island. Also, I haven't been but islands on the west coast but farther south of Phuket are apparently nearly empty. Haven't been to Pattaya but from what it sounds like, no one reason to go except for hookers. Definitely check out at least one of the main sites for ruins, Ayutthaya or Sukhothai.
I think September is the rainiest month but October is probably really wet also.
Also, for anyone looking for travel info, wikitravel.com is great, except some places don't have a lot of info.
There's lots of reasons to go to Pattaya besides hookers. There's also massages, go-go shows, "beer bars," cabarets, "karaoke", and other institutions which no doubt have absolutely nothing to do with prostitution.
Just got back from SE Asia. Spent some time in Thailand. Spend as much time in the north and in Phuket as you can. Just beautiful. Bangkok is interesting too, nice city and more modern than I was expecting. A lot of people knock it for being touristy, but the temples are beautiful there and the street markets are a great way to eat for cheap. I think the sex industry is well controlled in the country and if you don't want to expose yourself to it, you can just avoid certain areas. I found, unlike in Vietnam, people are much less pushy in Thailand and you likely won't have guys on motorbikes harrassing you to buy drugs or prostitutes.

Just got back from South Africa / Zimbabwe / Botswana with the UM Alumni Association tour. Highly recommend that one if you have the time. Trip of a lifetime.
Unfortunately we have to replace our recently deceased air conditioner, so no real vacations this summer. Maybe a few camping trips or a stay-cation.
Best city in the US.
Hit up the rooftop bar at the Market Pavilion Hotel during the day for a great view of the harbor. Since you probably won't be able to get reservations at Husk on short notice, grab dinner at Poogan's Porch next door (although there is no shortage of awesome restaurants downtown). Then you can head next door to the bar at Husk for a $16 craft cocktail.
Be sure to check out Battery Park and Rainbow Row before you leave as well.

I'm going to Montana. No second home, I'm not that rich, but my job is 100% portable so I spend the summers up in the Whitefish area with a lot of time in Glacier National Park.
2 weeks there 2 summers ago. Playing on Flathead and Swan lakes, trouting, touring Glacier, hiking in the Bob. Was heaven on earth.
That's beautiful country.
Are you going to raise a crop of dental floss?
Back to the family beachfront condo outside of Wilmington North Carolina. Sand, surf, pool, balcony looking at the ocean, and cocktails. Lots and lots of cocktails.
I work in education so I have a few trips planned. Going to Orlando, Portland, Chicago and back home to see the family in Michigan. Taking the girlfriend to Michigan to show her how great it is. She didn't like how cold (it was low 70s in July for the few days we were there) it was in the summer. I guess the blazing heat of Oklahoma is better to her. Time to change that!
Make sure you visit the Screen Door... and if you're going for brunch - which I recommend - get there early.
Check out the food carts. Some of them are quite gourmet.
She was complaining about low 70's? That's the ideal temperature for me. Michigan in the low 70's, partly cloudy, a little breeze. Nothing better than that.
I agree. But when you want to go to the beach and get tan, it's cold. I love the 70s during the day and cool nights with a light jacket. Hopefully I can get back to weather like that in the near future.

Its Powell's
Oh I've been, and I plan on going again when we are there.
Going to Italy this summer for a wedding. My cousin decided on a destination wedding, so off we go. The wedding is in some Tuscan town somewhere, so my own plans are to hit Rome and Florence before coming back.
I only have a few days, and Venice is harder to get to than Rome and doesn't have as many Vatican Cities as Rome does.
Going to the Firefly Music Festival in Delaware in June with 7 people. Huge lineup, but Paul McCartney is the headliner. Went to Bonnaroo with two friends last year, and we decided we had to check out another festival this year. I'm just praying I don't break 3 bones in my foot a month before the trip like I did last year. I only got the O.K. from the doctor to start walking a couple days before we left. I couldn't be more pumped for June 18th, though. Anybody else going to any festivals?
to my camp in the UP with the wife and kids. Then maybe a fishing trip to Canada decidely without wife and kids.
I'm taking my dog to the vet. I'm pretty sure he's contracted herpes :(
From bitches in EL?
check out magnolia plantation and gardens. it's one of the prettiest grounds i've ever seen.

and do a lot of home tours, the charleston mansions are beautiful.
Growing up, our extended family took several trips to Ocean Isle. Nice beach. About midway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach so you can take day trips to do things like see the battleship and be back in plenty of time for dinner and evening beach time.
Dumb story bro: last year my boss told me she was going there for vacation, and I was like, "oh, good idea, your kids will like the waterpark if they get bored with the beach." She didn't know there was a waterpark, so we looked on the map. No waterpark. They tore the damn thing down :(
We have gone to Sunset Beach for several years but never to Ocean Isle. There's been talk of going to Wilmington one day on the vacation so thanks for the info!
This is I think my vacation plan next summer. My options are:
- Do a west coast trip like you mentioned and try to attend some portion of the 2016 All-Star game in San Diego.
- Do a Midwest trip and see games in Milwaukee, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, and then to Omaha for the College World Series. I would include stops at the some of the B1G schools along the way.
- Do an east coast trip starting in Boston, going to New York, then Philadelphia, Baltimore, and DC.
my parents and sister/brother-in-law rented us all a home in florida so i'll be spending that week on the water.
Ready for both!

Eat at FIG if you can. One of the best meals of my life. Also the chef just won a James Beard award.
