OT: Summer Employment, Part II
So a while back, I think a few weeks ago, someone created a thread about jobs in the Ann Arbor area, which was pretty enlightening. I was wondering what's going on with the student usesr who are in town this spring/summer? Any faint shreds of part-time or full-time jobs slipping through the cracks? Good lord, its like 'Nam out there.
Personally, I've been shit out of luck, despite applying all over the place. I hope the rest of you are doing better than I am.
Don't get a job.
Just hang out in Wazoo all day. You'll be better for it.
I've been trying to find something too. I've had no luck whatsoever.
We are always hiring at my place of employment: Michigan Telefund.
http://www.giving.umich.edu/telefund/
You can apply via that link and help contribute to the University in a meaningful way, while earning a solid $9.25/hr.
I remember the days of Michigan Telefund. When I was there, it was $8/hour. Still pretty good. Making those calls was pretty painful though.
but it really depends on who we're calling. Dearborn alums are the crankiest.
We raise a lot of money for financial aid, scholarships, program and student support though. It is nice to have a positive impact on the university.
Responsibilities are for pussies and dads.
I am both...I guess I have no hope.
Fake your death.
Thank me later.
NOT cool! Come home!
What all have you applied for? Is East Quad dining hall (or any other) not hiring? Restaurants? How many phone calls or contacts are you making a day? Don't make me give you the lecture my dad gave me...!
Believe me, I've been going crazy.
Hey, truthfully, it's a tough market out there, but don't give up. Work every angle you possibly can. Don't be too proud to do any job. I also would recommend signing up to volunteer. At the very minimum you'll want to do anything just to not be bored all the time.
Plus, you're helping out in the community, which will be a great experience, but will either expand your network, or give you something to talk about during job interviews. While a student, I did Washtenaw Literacy my Senior year, and it's quite a humbling experience.
Is there nothing available for giving campus tours, driving Michigan buses, tutoring, painting homes? Moving people in/out?
Good luck!

I hear mgoblueshop is hiring part time employees to make cheap t-shirts. The pay is .10 per day.
I was able to get one of the five/six or so on campus jobs I applied for. I'll get about 10 hours a week, plus whatever sub shifts I can pick up. At $8 an hour, it won't even cover rent. Luckily I also umpire softball and ref soccer. That's where the big bucks are.
Total it should be enough to cover rent and bills and the essentials, but this summer will not be one of Dominic's, Conor's, or buying lunch at a restaurant every day like I've been able to get away with in summers past here in AA.
Gonna have to stick to Charlie's after 10 and maybe an occasional carafe of Sangria at Habana during happy hour.
(Unrelated: Don't support Packard Pub. They overcharged me $25 for lunch and have refused to refund me. Assholes.)
How can you become ref soccer? Where do you start? Sounds interesting.
Do psych studies all day long! The pay can range from 20 to 100 bucks!
When i was in school I drove U of M buses part time. It was a pretty nice job. I'm not sure how much help they need over the summer, though, as theres fewer routes to run.
A student I know is going through training, or he was the last time I talked to him. That doesn't really seem like a nice job, but it can't be too bad. No worse than flipping burgers at Krazy Jim's. Great place to eat, but I wouldn't really want to work at Blimpie Burger.
I'm looking for full-time employment in the AA area and I've had shit for luck as well.
Bubble Island is hiring I think. Underground Printing is looking for interns (no money though).
Check the UM student employment website too.
Take part in clinical trials. There's no way that could end poorly.
Some of my friends did them at WMU, paid about $1500 for 3 days....but they earned every penny of it. Said it was the worst experience of their life.
I did this with pfizer a couple times after i graduated. made about $6000. Its not too bad if you dont mind having a _lot_ of blood drawn. Mostly a bunch of hanging around playing PS2 games. But alas pfizer is gone.
$10/hr to work on my physics thesis full time. Totally lucked out and got the job because someone on my hallway's dad knew a guy who knew a guy who gave this professor funding to hire me.
Has anyone ever donated plasma anywhere within say 10-20 miles from Ann Arbor? I have a friend who gets paid around $120 a month just to donate plasma once a week/every other week. I'm not sure if the American Red Cross would pay you for something like that... Just wondering if anyone else had any experience with the process.
is...uhh....sketchy at best. There is always a large group of people out front that would keep most people away, and I grew up here. Not sure if there are any others in the area.
