OT: Stuff to do in/near UVA

Submitted by HenneGivenSunday on
In Charlottesville for a couple of days. Hit the downtown mall this evening. Planning on going to Monticello tomorrow. Any other suggestions from my fellow Virginia born/native Wolverines?

Just got back with the family from a week in Virginia Beach. Loved it ... when we were in the ocean or hotel pool. Otherwise, too darn hot. I could never live there but a nice vacation spot. Good restaurants, too. Loved Waterman's. Great food and layered seating so everyone can have an ocean view.

Was born there... I'm not a fan of the heat, the beach, or the crowds. Definitely a "to each their own" type of thing. Part of my issue is probably being raised by Michigan born parents trying to get back home. We finally left when I was 11. We lived in King George County for a while too, really loved that area by comparison.

Not a big history guy, but went anyway and loved it. I think they sell wine there too. Other cool thing to see is luray caverns.

Great hiking all around there if that's your thing. Richmond is about an hour away and has a bunch of historic stuff to do, you can see the church where Patrick Henry gave the give me liberty or give me death speech. Great art museum in Richmond. Lots of great breweries. There is a "watch Michigan football in Charlottesville" Facebook page which might give you some more Charlottesville specific ideas. I'm in Richmond and really like Charlottesville but I could not tell you the best things to do around there other than the downtown mall.

Church Hill, about a block from St Johns. Always looking for more people in RVA to watch the game with at bars; the official turnout at the UMAA parties at Gus' Bar and Grill is sad. :( Jaronclay (at) hot mail (dot) com if you're ever looking to watch a game somewhere downtown/the fan/church hill. Please put mgoblog in the subject line so it doesn't get caught in my spam filter. (Open invite for other RVA area boardies.)

If you appreciate wine, there are a lot of great wineries within half an hour of town. My girlfriend and I did a big tour of them around the area when we went down there for our anniversary. I highly recommend Veritas, and Pollack is pretty good, too. There's just great scenery on the way to those places, too.

Didn't get to go to Monticello, but if you're looking for good food in town, you should definitely hit up Mas Tapas. You might have to wait a bit depending on what time you show up, but it's well worth it.

spend time out at Wintergreen Resort.  It's not too far from Charlottesville.  If you're a beer drinking, Lickinghole Creek is in Goochland (they have fantastic barrel aged beers). I know neither are in Charlottesville, but they aren't terribly far. Have fun!

I agree with both of those.  Riverside is nothing special, but I love it.  Restaurant wise, aside from other restaurants named throughout this thread I'd add Continental Divide, Bluegrass Grill (breakfast), our farmer's markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays usually have great food.

Checking out the grounds, since UVA is too cool to have a campus, is cool for visitors.

Nelson County, just south has great hiking, breweries and wineries.  Blue mountain brewery has a great place to hang out outside.

There is always tons of live music going on as well.

There is a really nice elevated boardwalk through the woods around Monticello that drops you off in a park.  I suggest you allow yourself enough time to enjoy that as well.

Other presidents houses around there.  Luray cavrens is pretty cool.  I would assume that there are a bunch of civil war sites, especially in the Valley.

Head on over to Bodo's for breakfast and lunch, awesome bagel sandwiches. Monticello is fun, Skyline drive is a nice day trip out to the Shenendoah. You could also drive out to Wintergreen which is fun summer or winter. I actually worked as a Fedex driver in C'ville so literally know every corner of that area from just west of Richmond all the way back to Nelson County and Wintergreen.. One of the interesting things is a private castle in Afton  that has it's driveway as a private bridge across the interstate, that's pretty impressive, it's not open to the public but as a Fedex guy I got to drive right up there.

Native Detroiter now in the 757 since '98.  I do not know a whole lot about Charlottesville but I just wanted to say What's up to all the fellow Wolverines in the VA.  I ca not wait to see you at AJ Gator's on Holland in Va Beach(Ihave found that to be a place for us Wolverines to congregate) or better yet let's represent big time this season at the suckeye/Browns bar Tango's(off of Witchduck Rd also in Va Beach) and take over that place.  I'll see all of you September 3rd!!

PS The historical sites are great and both Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens are a blast although very crowded this time of year.

The Alley Light seems like a cool speak easy...and if you're into craft beer, Three Notch'd has gotten solid reviews. I am passing through there this Saturday night and have been doing some research. I hope this helps!

More Ideas ...
  • Mudhouse (coffee house on Downtown Mall)
  • Revolutionary Soup (just off of Downtown Mall), scratch-made locally-sourced soups, salads, sandwiches
  • South Street Brewery (just off of Downtown Mall)
  • Walk around UVA Campus/Grounds, see Rotunda and central green area.
  • Peter Chang's China Grill (North Wing of Barracks Road shopping area)
  • Taste of China (a little bit north on 29)
  • Main Street Market (a small plaza with various boutique-y foodie shops such as feast! and Gearharts Chocolates on W Main St)
  • Walk around the neighborhood just north of Downtown Mall: Court Square and surrounding streets; very interesting large, old houses. Also, IIRC, just in front of the courthouse in Court Square is where slaves were auctioned off back in 18th/19th centuries (that gave me chill as I learned that while standing there)
  • Scottsville (a bit South of Charlottesville), rent a canoe/kayak and do a day trip on the James River (we've had lots of rain this spring/summer so the river is running high/fast)
  • There are some interesting vinyl record shops downtown (if you're into vinyl): Melody Supreme, Sidetracks Music.

May I humbly suggest you take an hour or two and walk around the UVA grounds.  It really is worth the experience.  I don't think they'd be doing tours in the summer, but you never know.  Also, Monticello isn't the only presidential mansion in the area; someone mentioned Montpelier which is maybe 30 minutes away, and Ash Lawn-Highland is the house of James Monroe and right next door to Monticello.  Actually there are two former houses belonging to Monroe in the area; one is smack in the middle of the UVA grounds.

Stop saying grounds.  Its a fucking campus.

Also when I was there for a model un conference in high school we went to the white spot and it was pretty good.  Plus as the only predominatley black school at the conference we found it funny in a "uva frats have been known to make their pledges but on black face and pick cotton and they have a restaurant called the white spot" sort of way."

My wife lived in Charlottesville and I used to enjoy going there to visit her, but that was 20 years ago now. Monticello (Jefferson's house), Ash Lawn (Monroe's) and Montepellier (Madison's) up in Orange County IIRC were all worth the time and effort to go to. There are a lot of wineries in the area, and a number of them are making pretty good wine. I always liked Horton, Barborsville, and Afton Mountain (beautiful tasting room and view). I haven't been to Charlottesville in years, but when I did we used to go have lunch at Big Jim's. I searched and found that it is now a North Carolina BBQ place called Rud Hub Food Co. Have you been or know how it is?

Definitely 2nd Bodo's Bagels!  They have 3 locations I believe now so you should't be too far from any of them.  Another breakfast spot is Spudnuts Doughnuts.  Made from potatoes, hence the name and they usually have a line out the door starting at 6am.  But bring cash, no CC type of place.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Monticello was pretty great, especially on a really nice day like today. One of the things I really love about this blog is all the support. Thanks again, and Go Blue!
