OT: Stubbs BBQ Goes Big Time
Our favorite MGoBBQ sponsor, Stubbs, has been acquired by McCormick for $100 million cash.
I had been trying some of the different Stubbs offerings since they started sponsoring Mgoblog and generally found them to be pretty high quality.
Congrats to them, though I'm assuming this means they won't be doing a whole lot more Mgoblog sponsorship marketing going forward...
Oh MgoJohnStamos, you crazy.
Do your views necessarely reflect the views of Danone, inc?
Jokes on you! I've had that shit for years.
And all Greek yogurt sucks. Tastes like I assume the Battle of Thermopylae would have smelled.
Is the male, University of Michigan version of the "basic bitch."
He's the "bottom bitch".
Wow, so far this is shaping up to be a great thread!
I like Wolverine Devotee. This is not a jab at him. I just love the term and it's my favorite South Park episode. Anytime I can throw out that reference I do.
So will Stubb's BBQ restaurant now be serving McCormick's BBQ sauce?
Ha, I doubt it.
But I wouldn't be surprised if the recipes for the bottled sauce vs. what you get at the restaurant are different in the near future...
Provided McCormick bundles several hardwoods and an aquarium smoker inclusive with each $7.00 spice bottle here in Chicago. Dry rub and an aquarium smoker are the nads.
Love Rudy's BBQ sauce. Have an almost empty bottle in my fridge now. Going back to Austin next week to get my next bottle.
Went to Franklin's about 10 times. Actually got in three times. (I had a 2 year old, not really great for standing in line 2-3 hours).
Franklin's is by far the best meat of any of the Austin BBQ places. I don't even use the suaces they have on the table at Franklin's.
Rudy's is my ultimate go to for Austin BBQ mainly because Franklin's is so hard to get in to and always closed by early afternoon.
I've been to Lockhart a couple times. Of the three "big" places I have been Black's and the one that sounds like a german last name (I think it starts with an "S"). Have not been to the other. They were pretty good, but I don't think they compare at all to Rudy's or Franklin's. The County Line gets overlooked some times but I like their food as well.
There's also plenty of newer places in Austin worth checking out. La Barbeque, Micklethwait, Freedman's... all good stuff.
Also worthy of a shoutout: Luling City Market, if you have the self control to drive past Lockhart.
Hands-down. Trust me, I live here.
Aaron Franklin is a marketing machine, but he has been surpassed in the art of BBQ.
LaBBQ is great, no question. And it's hard to argue against a place that has free beer. Also hard to argue against the tried and true method of hiring away Franklin's protege. But hey, the more the merrier for us.
But Franklin also has a nostalgia factor going for it. Before Franklin, the best BBQ in town was... Rudy's? Lamberts? Mann's? Salt Lick (if we're counting that as Austin)? John Mueller before he flamed out? Franklin's little trailer under I-35 was an oasis is an inexplicable desert.
Also, the espresso BBQ sauce. Not that the food needs it. But it's damn good.
We, the consumers, are the winners.
My vote if you include nearby towns is Louie Mueller in Taylor. Wayne's beef rib is still the best meat I've ever put in my mouth (and I've put a lot in my piehole). I'd put it up against anything in Austin proper, now or previous.
If you've never been to Snow's in Lexington, go. The pork steak is beyond awesome. Dare I say, Harbaugh-level?
If you pre-order an entire brisket, you get to skip the line.
Also, I've heard that there is a group of Austin high schoolers that have started a business over the summer, where they will camp out for you early in the morning and reserve your spot in line at Franklin.
I seem to recall Franklin's making an announcement recently that if you're on line you're the one that has to order and buy the food...no more placeholders.
But OMG it is soooo worth the wait.

Surprisingly, I think it's the one thing Salt Lick does better than anyone. Their Spicy variety is the absolute bomb.
Second place is Louie Mueller's jalapeno pulled pork sauce. Phenomenal.
It is, although as I recall the first restaurant opened up in Lubbock in the late 1960s. I could be wrogn there, but I remember hearing a bit about the history of the name and the brand when I was down there once. As someone mentioned upthread, I also have yet to find a sauce in their line that I haven't liked - very good products indeed.
Holy crap.
I had friends from Austin talk up the BBQ there for years. Obviouosly, I called them fapping fanboys.
So, years later I go there for a job interview and eat at the Salt Lick. HOLY COW!
Hands down, the best ribs I've ever imagined eating in my entire life. BBQ has never been the same for me.
Um... yeah, I really like BBQ ribs =/
Haven't tried Salt Lick BBQ sauce, but their rub is hot as...well, it's hot.
They were sampling a few flavors at Meijer a month back. Great stuff. It's my new go-to BBQ sauce for ribs (sorry Sweet Baby Ray's).
now they will sub in the cheaper ingrediants to make up for the higher advertising margins. It's like Stubbs was Brandon'd (but the guys got paid, so good for them!).
I like Stubbs' marinades. My go-to stuff. Hopefully the quality stays the same.
"Ladies and gentleman, I'm a ... millionaire."
I hope it stays that way....

Those of you living in Chicago can appreciate the depth of this culinary loss. Uncle John's was, until Mack experienced health issues and closed up shop, the best damn barbeque in Chicago and probably the world - ever.
Have you eaten at Salt Lick in Austin?
If so, then by all means, to each their own.
Wish I could have tried it.
...let alone the world. It is, however, better than any BBQ in Chicago.
Hmm,.... that's hard to believe. But, I'm willing to be a doubter if I get to sample all 5.
Edit: I also think it makes a difference what style of BBQ you prefer. I'm not a dry-rub guy. Are you saying Salt-Lick is the 5th best non-dry rub place or just the 5th best place? Regardless, I'd like to try them all please.
