OT: Stoops Offer

Submitted by icefins26 on

This is from my source at ND about Stoops. Take it for what it's worth:

$6 million per year
$500k for BCS appearance
$1 million for BCS win
$2 million for title

They didn't want Kelly at all because he campaigned for John Kerry (pro-choice) and he had off the field issues.

FWIW.

above the Janitors in the totem pole. I would be surprised if they know anything more than 5 mins before it is released to the press.

So yes, I think your friend has been fed garbage.

That being said, nothing stopping ND from throwing an even more absurd contract at Stoops (they have had a warm up for doing that already no).

who lives in Conklin, MI and he loves bubble gum. Well, he knows this guy who works at the Bubbalo chewing gum Co. and my friend told be they are coming out with a Charlie Weis commemorative gum flavor in light of his recent firing. It tastes like biscuits and gravy and has a gushy bacon fat liquid center. If you send in 50 proof of purchase seals, you get a free pair of kaki pants with a 60" waist band.... They think the kids will love it....

Given Stoops' comments earlier this week, I doubt that he is going to ND.

But, Stoops is far less scary (in my eyes) than Kelly and I don't believe that a coach has ever won a NC at school A, left for school B and then won another NC.

But don't misinterpret my comments, he's a very good coach, and a decided step up from Charlie.

but I can't believe anyone would fear Brian Kelly more than Bob Stoops. Maybe it is just me, but I don't have a lot of concern about Kelly (another coach who has good O and no D a la Weis). Stoops phas put together some amazing teams on both sides of the ball. Give me Kelly any day.

Stoops makes a lot of sense for ND - they need a coach who is proven at the college level. But it seems to make little sense for Stoops. I just cant see why he would go to ND from Oklahoma, when Oklahoma could easily match their offer. What am I missing? Does he have ties to ND? Did he state at some point that the ND job was his "dream job"? Is Rudy his favorite movie? Is he into Catholicism? Was he an altar boy? Can anyone enlighten me?

That I know. Seems anyone in the ND message board circle of trust knows someone in the AD office who is claiming that Stoops is in negotiations. I had heard one of the sticking points is that Stopps wants complete control of all team discipline and the school is hesitant as Charlie Weis had a number issues in this regard. I can only imagine what went down with Charlie with all the favortisim he showed. Again all second hand from ND guy.

notre dame is very catholic, but to ignore a coach for his political leanings (as the OP alleges) seems rather foolish to me. last i checked notre dame isnt the pat robertson university of religious fundamentalism.

yeah yeah i know. obama the boo-ing. still seems bizarre to me though.

but think of it this way:

Many UM fans/alumni had fits because UM wasn't hiring a "Michigan Man" as their new head coach. There is still a large faction that is angry about this. UM tradition is a big thing to these people (to most UM fans) and they care deeply about it. I would wager though that it doesn't come near the passion Catholics feel about their religion.

This is one of the most polarized debates of the past 25 years and the Catholics views are well known. I know many Catholics and even those who aren't the go to church every week type, are still extremely passionate about this issue.

I think people that dismiss this as a non-issue 1) do not know any Catholics and 2) are extremely naive as to how passionate they are in relation to this issue.

I can't say 100% that it is a deal breaker for the university, but I can say that if any of the Catholics I know were in charge, it would be.

That's pretty low. I would suspect that many criminals have religous affiliations of one sort or another but just because a person of a certain religion perpetrates a crime doesn't mean it is sanctioned by the religion.

I get that you are being funny here, but religious jokes are just not something I find funny.

Forgive my ignorance...

But what is so great about Bob Stoops that merits that kind of salary!? What has he done since losing his brother as DC!? Is it the continual but whoopings by Texas that they like so much!? The monster upset losses to West Virginia and Boise State!?

If this is true, then Notre Dame really does know how to pick them. Bob Davie, George O'Leary, Ty Willingham, Charlie Weiss, and Bob Stoops...a long list of coachs that don't scare me. With guys like Brian Kelly and Butch Davis available, this pick makes me laugh.

"For the third, and hopefully final time, let me again state that I will continue to be the coach at Oklahoma. I appreciate the history and tradition of Notre Dame. I also appreciate the history and tradition of Oklahoma, and I have been part of building that tradition here.

I work for a wonderful president (David Boren) and athletic director (Joe Castiglione), who have created an incredible work environment at OU. There haven't been any plans for a meeting or negotiations with Notre Dame and there will not be. Any reporting to that fact is completely erroneous. I will not be the next coach at Notre Dame."
