OT: Stoops Offer

This is from my source at ND about Stoops. Take it for what it's worth:

$6 million per year
$500k for BCS appearance
$1 million for BCS win
$2 million for title

They didn't want Kelly at all because he campaigned for John Kerry (pro-choice) and he had off the field issues.

FWIW.

Since it's a public university, it's available to the public. Page 4 has info on compensation.

It looks to me like he makes $1.8 mil base salary, increasing by $100,000 every year he's at Oklahoma. He makes $600,000 for speaking engagements. Then there are a bunch of bonuses, the largest being $100,000 for a BCS game and $150,000 for an appearance in the BCS MNC game.

Overall, Wikipedia says he'll make $3.675 million this year plus incentives. Not quite sure how that all works out, but it's Wikipedia, so it can't be wrong, right? /sarcasm

I just don't think he's going to leave Oklahoma. Here's an interesting article on the situation. It's pretty cut and dry:

“How unprofessional,” Stoops said Wednesday. “I saw the report Tuesday morning and I’m thinking someone has sold this guy [ESPN’s NFL reporter Adam Schefter] a bill of goods. Someone is trying to get this guy fired — because he got nothing right.”

I’ll get to why I’m bringing this all up again in a moment. First, let’s get it all out there.

There never were any negotiations. Period.

“Nobody I was with negotiated anything,” Stoops said. “If my agent is talking [to anyone], I am. And if he’s talking to someone without my knowledge, it will be the last time he represents me.”

Seems pretty clear to me. And this is nothing against you, icefins, I'm just saying I highly doubt this is gonna happen...

I expect that every coach in that situation would lie about it. They don't want to blow their current job because the new job may not work out. Coach Kelly is side-stepping reporters right now, but he's definitely thinking about ND.

Period.

“Here is what I don’t ever want to do, this time or any time,” Stoops said. “I never confirm or deny whether somebody has offered me a job or not. One thing I will never do is interview for one.

“Whether somebody says to me or my agent, ‘Here’s what it is,’ I never set up a negotiation or anything like that. But if somebody throws something at us, I never acknowledge or deny it. That way, they save face if I don’t take [the job] and I don’t have to acknowledge whether some one did [offer] or not.”

******

In other words, ND may have offered me a lucrative contract that I will think over and talk to my family about, but I'm not going to tell you. And, as I've made clear in the past, I don't negotiate or interview for other jobs, so if you want me, you'd better make it a very lucrative offer!

When your team is winning, be ready to be tough, because winning can make you soft. On the other hand, when your team is losing, stick by them. Keep believing.

9-4 in year one. 8-3 YTD year two wihtout Pat White. One loss on the road at Auburn and a second loss by 3 points to the #5 team in the country. Just beat biggest rival who was ranked in Top 10. Chance to beat pretty good Rutgers team this weekend. His record doesn't support "out of element" at this point.

Coach Stew may well indeed turn out to be ill equipped to bring WVU the kind of success they had under RR, but it seems his tenure was sabotaged in the public's mind the moment he got the nod. Big WVU boosters talking shit about him. The internets clearly not hip on him. Talking heads on the WWL giving less than ringing endorsements. But he's done alright so far.

I never thought I'd stand up for the guy, but he's done a solid job at WVU. Not sure how you can call him "out of his element." He is 17-7 as head coach, and that's not counting the Okalahoma game. And, he took over right as Slaton left, and White left a year later.

As far as recruiting goes...

In 2008, he had only half a year to recruit and he got three 4*s.

In 2009, he got six 4*s.

For 2010, he's currently at four 4*s. That's a total of 13.

For comparison, in RichRod's last three years, RichRod had a total of four 4*s and two 5*s.

I kind of doubt that they didn't want Kelly simply because he campaigned for a pro-choice candidate.

Not trying to open up the proverbial can of worms, but the law school had one of the most pro-choice presidents in recent history give a speech and get an honorary degree. Sure it outraged a lot of people, but if ND didn't care then, they likely won't care now.

If it was off the field issues alone, sure I would buy that.

Notre Dame leadership didn't anticipate, I don't think, the amount of backlash they got from Obama's speech at commencement last year. The bishop refused to attend and there are certain alumni who have made very clear that they were not pleased about the speech and would probably take a very dim view of hiring an avowedly pro-choice football coach so soon after the controversy last year.

Would this be a deal-breaker? I don't think so by itself, but I think it could carry at least a little more weight than many think.

and/or inviting that person to speak is very different from hiring someone. No matter how warmly he was received or what his honorary degree said, Obama was still an "outsider" after his appearance at Notre Dame.

Notre Dame's football coach is not only an "insider" in the sense that he's an employee, he's also one of the most prominent -- maybe the single most prominent -- public faces of the university.

Many in the Catholic church hierarchy want to excommunicate anyone who takes a public pro-choice position. I bet there are many influential people associated with ND who just can't tolerate the idea that the football coach would be known to be pro-choice. Being pro-choice may not necessarily be an automatic disqualifier at ND, but I would not be surprised if it was.

I have friends in the medical profession that are Catholic and, despite what medical ethics may dictate and the opportunity to make money, they will not practice things like perscribing birth control to patients or councilling a person that an abortion/fetal reduction (in the case of a multiple pregnancy) is in the best interest of the woman.

It is easy for non-Catholic people to think this is absurd, but I promise you that to them, this is a massive issue.

First, I would like to reiterate others in that I'm not ready to believe that Stoops is going to jump at the money.

However... This is an interesteing deal, and after Stoops' comments about staying at OK, rumors that he is building a house in town, general Face of the Program type reputation there - I wonder if the college football world would go ape over his (hypothetical) acceptance of the offer the same way they did with Rodriguez?

Would they, or do the golden boys - Stoops and ND - get a pass? Would the criticism suddenly switch from the personal character type issues of Rodriguez to the more general college-football-is-going-to-hell-think-of-the-children type stuff?

I think I know my answer.

The appropriate thing for them to do is say 'I'm staying at Oklahoma' and let the media speculate on whatever they want. A good friend of mine is a big ND fan. He is from southern MI, very near the IN border. His best friend, who still lives in the area I described, is good friends with one of the student managers on the ND football team, who also works in the ND football office.

Yesterday, my buddy informed me that the ND student manager and my buddy's friend had a conversation regarding Bob Stoops and ND. The ND football manager told my buddy's friend that Stoops to ND is a done deal. I trust my friend, and I've also met his best friend, he is a good guy and also a huge Michigan fan.

I guess with these things you never actually know until you know, but it seems like things point more and more to Stoops.
