OT: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Between Kareem's announcement in an hour and seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens later tonight, today has quickly become one of the most exciting days of the year.
I think we've all made our Kareem predictions already, but anyone have any predictions for The Force Awakens?

Great when I first saw it as an elementary school kid. Empire is also pretty good. By the time they got around to Return of the Jedi I has lost interest. I've seen it of course and it's fine. I've seen the last three because my son likes the series. They all suck. Hopefully this will have a little of the feel of the original three.

I saw the first one in a theater when I was a kid and it was amazing. I identified with that feeling that Luke must have felt when he was on Tattooine and was looking up at the horizon into the sky. I didn't know anything about Joseph Campbell or the Hero's Journey at the time, but watching the movie sure made you feel that emotional tug.

SPOILER ALERT
At one of the specal screenings I've attended, I’ve seen some rough footage of the prequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – here's the original meeting between Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver)

I got a telegram this morning that said it was so. I'm heading to the Kinetoscope this evening to see if it truly is so.

appropo of the new movie, back when E.T. came out it was a big deal and the line around the State theatre on south university wrapped around the block and then some. that summer one of the guys in our house who was our center on the football team and was working at a lumber yard in brighton. he'd drive home in a crappy old brown vega station wagon that was barely big enough to fit him, and on the way home he'd get about 5 of the 6 beers in a 6-pack down by the time he was rolling up past the theatre with the line going around the block.
he would slowly drive by the theatre and yell, 'the alient dies and comes back to life!!'. we could hear it from the house 2 blocks away and it made you laugh every time he did it.

I don't comment enough to get many points so I've decided to hold a mgoblog ransom. If I don't have XXXX points by 5pm I'm dropping the spoils. By the end of the day I'll either be using my ill-gotten points to become a legitimate member or trying to survive in Bolivia.

Those three films were a collossal effup, it's very own "George's Lasting Lessons".
I think The Force Awakens will be much improved mainly because George Lucas is no longer involved in story-writing, film-making and marketing.
The prequels are what happens when you get a megalo-maniacal film maker with delusions of grandeur, fire all great writers and critics you worked with like Kasdan, and then surround himself with "Yes" people (Lochdogs at Skywalker Ranch, etc.). Lucas was in charge of everything, writing, directing and driven not by art, but by the need to sell toys and make lifelong alimony payments. George Lucas is a lot like David Brandon. Make a buck. Make a buck. Screw the story.
There are some great critiques of the Star Wars prequels (I find Mr. Plinkets 9 part lambasting the best). It's what happens when you take a simple, but great hero/war story with characters people genuinely care about and pretty much do the complete opposite with the audacity to keep doing it across three prequel films. Rick McCallum still can't find a job.

Another interesting one to check out is Belated Media's "What if the prequels were good?" (just released the one for Episode 3 this week). Basically works from the premise of an exec at Fox getting Lucas's original script and tinkering with it rather than just rubber stamping everything. Doesn't solve the CGI and lazy directing elements, but it does present a story that is at least compelling and logical.
If you like it leave a comment on this webzone.

I don't have predictions nor will I produce spoilers for people unless asked, but my wife and I will be going to see Star Wars tonight as well. Actually, I do in fact know someone who was in line for the marathon at the AMC 20 in Livonia in the small hours and I really have no intention of contacting them for days as I am sure nearly a day in a theatre probably will turn them into a physical wreck. They will definitely need their rest, or so I assume.

What are the odds I can just show up and get 1 seat to a show tonight?

Sad to say I'm working tonight so I can't catch it on the first night, but I've got tickets for tomorrow afternoon and I couldn't be more excited. The early reviews have been tremendous putting it somewhere between a New Hope, and Return of the Jedi in terms of quality.

As giddy as a 12 year old school girl to see this movie.
