OT: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Submitted by Shakespeare on

Between Kareem's announcement in an hour and seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens later tonight, today has quickly become one of the most exciting days of the year.

I think we've all made our Kareem predictions already, but anyone have any predictions for The Force Awakens

Will Jar-Jar Binks be reprieved? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yy3q9f84EA

One of my students just blurted out a huge spoiler for the movie…I am not a huge Star Wars fan but still pretty annoying.

I sought out spoilers. I don't care about Star Wars and someone told me not to click a link because someone was being an asshole about spoilers. So I clicked because yolo!!!

My prediction is that this movie will be better than all of the previous six. JJ is an excellent director and I have complete faith in him. I'm seeing the movie Saturday morning.

I mean, Rotten Tomatoes does not account for the nuance of individual reviews, but TFA is right there with Empire and A New Hope with a lot more reviews. From the hardcore fans' stuff I've read, TFA is right up there too. It won't capture that 'magic' that the original did when it was released, but if you put aside those heart strings, it is apparently a really good movie.

Couldn't resist. I worshipped the first Star Wars film as my god, liked the second, loathed the muppet one, and hated the Jar-Jar Binks/Christian Haydensen trio like a sickness. I do have high hopes for this new one. Also, I believe I inadvertently picked up the spoiler from an asshole on facebook who posted it in the comments section of a news article that had nothing to do with the film.

I have tickets for 9:30 pm tonight. I almost had to rush home from the school I work at tonight for the showing. We had parent teacher conferences (don't ask why tonight...), but the building was shut down today. So I have been working assessment reports and learning maps all morning. I am excited but tempering them after I was disappointed with episodes 1 and 2.

I will be trying to avoid spoilers for the next week or so. Very excited to have the in-laws in town next week so my wife and I can leave the kids with them and run off to see it.(want to see it first before the kids just to make sure nothing too scary as they are 4 and 6)

Reviews look good but so were the ones for PM Ep1. Like an idiot I read half of the DNews review yesterday and they had a spolier about Luke so I shut it down. Can't wait

As it turns out, Luke is NOT Leia's brother- in fact, he is not a male but a trans who was discovered in one of those alien bars by Obi won. The whole story of his origin was a lie by Obi.

Surprise- he becomes The "Empire Magazine" "Jedi of the Year" after coming out

I've heard from a few friends that 3D added absolutely zero to this film.

Falls in line with what JJ said on Stern a week ago. To paraphrase he answered "it wasn't shot in 3D and he doesn't like 3D".

2D for this guy tonight!

My unpopular opinion... And I've only recently been willing to share it. I don't get the hype. The first two movies were excellent visually, but the story wasn't that complex and characters pretty flat. The third was ok. The next three were so bad it was painful. Will i see it? Sure, i like jj Abrams and I like space, military dramas. But the obsession for a series that had more bad than good is something I don't understand. I don't begrudge others their hobbies, hell my michigan obsession is equally irrational, but I just don't get the star wars love.

Compare it to the scifi movies that were on at the time.  It wasn't an intellectual exercise trying to find the meaning of life in the stars.  It was basically a hero's journey with a space backdrop, put up against a universe with a backstory and seemingly endless possibilities to make your own story.

I know other people who don't like the series and I get it and don;t hold it against them, but for me it's a giant, interesting, open canvas with epic fantasy themes and thats why I love it.
