OT: Stanton to start for Lions on Sunday - Moral Dilemma?

Submitted by Moe Greene on

The New York Times is reporting that Drew Stanton (the MSU grad who once referred to our school as the "University of Puke") is starting for the Lions this Sunday against Da Bears.

Here's the question - can one root for the Lions to win and not for Stanton? Or on Sunday, are we all Bears fans?

Of course we pull for the Lions.  Come on really?  Rooting against Drew Stanton on the Lions is very little brotherish.  Go Stanton!  (But please come back soon Matt Stafford.)

I'm just going to root for him to not get another concussion.  I wouldn't mind Stanton being Sparty's own "prodigal son returns" story someday.  It will be difficult for him to do that if he sustains too many more head injuries.

Dear Matt Millen,

Thank you for choosing Drew Stanton in the NFL draft. I really appreciate your effort to reach out and grab a quality player from your backyard to be a part of the Detroit Lions. There is no doubt that he will be very successful and endeared by fans of the Detroit Lions and of college football in the state of Michigan. Great job Matt, surely he will be a great asset to the franchise.

Sincerely,

David Harris.

offense is going to struggle big time.  Stanton sucks as a NFL QB and he'll be gone after this season.  It's up to the Lions defense to put points on the board.

Honestly, there are far more reasons to feel sorry for him than to root against him for something that he did or said 10 years ago as a cocky college QB.

I mean, the guy was drafted (and clearly a reach) by the Lions; that's purgatory enough.  And he's been stuck on the bench...for the Lions...for his entire career.  A columnist from the News recently implored the Lions to simply let him go, as they clearly have no plans for him and he's never going to resemble a starting QB in the NFL.

And it's not like he ever beat U-M.  He had one good half, and then LaMarr blew him up.  He was never the same after that.

Go easy on him.

Stanton is absolutely terrible, but I am generally able to forget college rivalries when the players move on and join my pro team. Rooting against Stanton would be about as petty as Browns fans rooting against Braylon for being a Michigan alum. We don't need to stoop to the level of combo Browns/OSU fans.

I don't know, I think it depends on the circumstances.  If Stanton was good, was our starter and we actually had a chance at a decent season, I would always want to win.  Now, I might want us to win running the ball, or by playing good defense, but I would still want to win.  Braylon was the best WR option the Browns had.

Now, this is a different scenario.  The season is already fucked, familiar territory, I know.  And Stanton is not a guy we plan on relying on in the future (if we want to win).  So I'm cool with rooting against him.  This doesn't mean I'll be rooting for the Bears necessarily, but I'm not going to be bummed if we lose because Stanton had a shitty game.

Best case scenario - Stanton throws 4 picks but we pull out a defensive battle.

Worst case scnario - Stanton plays a great game but we blow it anyway.

More realistic scenario (making this thread moot) - Stanton sucks and the Lions lose, but necessarily because he sucked.

I was here during the enire Braylon tour of duty and can tell you without a shadow of doubt that in 2008 nobody in Cleveland gave two shits about his alma matter when he went to the Pro Bowl.  It wasn't until 2009 when Braylon stopped being able to hold onto the ball that people here remembered he was Blue.  Then Braylon started playing the "everybody hates me" card and it was on.

Browns fans could care less where somebody went to college if they play hard.  Aaron Shea was VERY popular here as was Leroy Hoard and George Lilja.  Your avitar notwithstanding, don't believe the hype.

Should recognize they're better off gaining positioning in the NFL draft than the 2010 standings.  It's already build-for-next-year time for the Lions, again.  So yeah root for Stanton to stink it up.  Its just like when Millen was GM, you want to lose (take one step back) so that you can move forward.

They'll have a good shot at making the playoffs next year, IMO.

they'll have a "good" shot at making the playoffs next year? Really?  Maaaayyybeee if they stayed 100% healthy, but there is no reason to think that'll happen, especially with our starting QB.  (who i think, when healthy, is a stud)

Don't get me wrong, I'm as big of a Lions fan as anyone, but I wouldn't say that the Lions' playoff chances next year are "good".  possible?  sure.  probable?  no.  good?  hell no.

BUT, you are entitled to your opinion (hence why you said IMO) so all I can say is I admire your optimism.

i have said many times ... i dont care about michigan state at all ... i will cheer for michigan players in the pros but beyond that you either played for michigan or you didnt ... hence i have no problem rooting for that puke team that is the lions and for some reason buy season tickets to watch

At this point, I'd rather the Lions get a high draft pick and get some linemen who can run block, so let Stanton go out there and get creamed.  Guy was overrated in college and hasn't done much of anything with the Lions, which is saying something considering the carousel of QBs they have worked with.  He'll probably be picking Julius Peppers out of his helmet after this weekend, so I don't wish the guy any ill will.

I don't think college sports have anything to do with your pro team for the most part. If you are a Lions fan, you want the players that give your team the best chance to win regardless of the college they attended.  I don't really have any lingering resentment for Michael Jenkins on the Falcons as long as he helps us win for example.

by no longer caring about the Lions.  After one playoff win in my 40 years of existance, I have given up.  The Lions will never be winners and Charlie Brown will never kick that football.  It's hopeless.

Quality programs and franchises return to dominance after brief periods of being down.  Bad programs and franchises give glimmers of hope but never sustain success.  Michigan football will be back soon.  The Lions will continue to suck.

to just give me opinion instead of attacking the question posed!  i split my loyalty between Colorado teams and Michigan teams based on which team i knew first.  i knew the Broncos first but i am a close second with the Lions.  i truly want the Lions to do well with whomever they have on the field for them at the time!  Go Lions! Go Blue!
