OT - Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T?

Submitted by lbpeley on
Need help from a broader range of people. Too spotty on the internets trying to find critiques on this area. My company largely does business in Michigan - including the U.P. - but also some in northern/central Indiana and Ohio. We are ditching Nextel and it's been put upon me to decide who to switch to - Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T. Looking mainly for service coverage reliability. We do have several Blackberries but we're more concerned with actual cell phone service in these areas. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sprint coverage is much improved in the U.P. However, I think it is roaming. When I was back this summer had good coverage in Iron Mountain, Hancock, Little Traverse (very suprised), and Marquette.

I believe (could be wrong about this) that even if Verizon doesn't have coverage in the area, it picks up coverage from another service. Verizon would be my vote as well. AT&T has the iPhone and that's about all.

I would say go with at &t. First of all Sprint and Verizon run a technology that is going no where fast it is called CDMA. The rest of the world(75% +) including at &t and T-Mobile run GSM. The data speeds in which GSM will increase to Sprint and VZW won't be able to catch without changing out their networks. As far as coverage goes Verizon across the country in rural areas would probably give you better coverage but if you're looking for data speed and applications(line of business) at&t would have them all beat and their coverage world wide is much much better. Other side notes at &t controls 50% of IP address in the U.S and I belive the world so other carriers have to buy them from at&t and FEMA chose at &t over the other carriers based on network and data connection speed etc. Also if you look online the amount of customers Sprint is losing per quarter is pretty high and Verizon is good a what they do but if you read up on which company in the long run is going to be the best most experts pick at &t ,because they switched out their network years ago were the other 2 will have to at some point to keep up with at &t ... what that means is you will have to buy new phones etc like I did when at &t did it when they merged with Cingular.

Are you sure? I've read CDMA is superior to GSM. Regardless, AT&T and T-Mobile are, IME, terrible when it comes to dropped calls/call quality, and Verizon is great. This is the only reason I haven't bought an iphone. Also, I believe Sprint and Nextel merged a while back.

Yes. And I believe AT&T uses CDMA technology for their 3G. Anyway, if anyone is wondering why AT&T has more and "better" phones it's because 80%+ of the world's population uses GSM phones. From what I understand CDMA is really only used in the U.S., Japan and South Korea (not sure about Canada and Mexico). If you plan on traveling to Europe, Asia or India, get yourself an AT&T.

CDMA has more channels for calls on the tower hence the better connections with Verizon but try making a call and sending an email with a CDMA device at the same time won't happen. GSM you can send an email or be on the internet and a phone call at the same time since GSM uses different channels for voice and data. Also the road map for both Sprint and Verizon will call for GSM. Sprint is yapping about 4G but there is no such thing at this point in wireless. CDMA is and old technology and you can only change out the hardware in the network for so long to keep up with GSM after that CDMA will come to an end. Also CDMA is much cheaper to maintain and setup there is an article on CNET about it.

I've always heard that rule of thumb is Verizon has the best service and AT&T has the best phones. Saying that, I have AT&T and used to have Verizon and I don't find the service any worse, and it's actually better some places up north.

For SE Michigan and Indiana, I've found that AT&T is typically okay, with the occasional spotty point. But really, everytime I'm in the area, and that's a lot, it's pretty good coverage. I rarely ever miss a call or simply lose service. Can't really speak to Verizon, but those that have had Sprint in the area usually have almost identical coverage. Someone who lives full time in the area might be able to help more though.

I was a Sprint customer for years. They always seemed to have the best prices. Most of my coworkers say that the Sprint prices for unlimited calling and data are the best in the industry. My issue with Sprint was coverage, always seemed to have lots of dead spots. Maybe they've fixed that now. Sprint always offers the Palm Pre which everyone I've talked to likes more than the Blackberry. Currently with Verizon. More expensive, but most of my friends and family are on it, so I get most of my phone calls free. Great coverage. Limited phone selection although rumor is that they'll be offering the Palm Pre early next year so they may be working to correct the phone selection issue.

I have AT&T and do like it for the most part. The one thing I have noticed this year at games is that AT&T simply does not work. At the ND game, the guy with me had Verizon and his phone worked all game. My phone not once. The only thing I can think of is if the 3G doesn't work well in the Stadium because of everyone else. So, go with AT&T, but don't expect great service 7-8 times a year in the Fall for 3-4 hours.

I have an iphone and i've had the same problem during gamedays where anytime basically right before until after the game, the phone is dead. My friend who works for AT&T told me its because iphones take up so much bandwith, and all of the AT&T phones in the stadium goes to the same tower, it just overloads it and screws up the whole area covered by that cell phone tower. but other than that, my service works great!

I have an iPhone 3GS on AT&T and at the Western Michigan game, I couldn't do anything. I tried to email my wife pictures of the game... didn't go through. I tried to call my wife... didn't go through. I've had awesome AT&T service pretty much everywhere I've gone, but in the Big House, it seemed really bad.

I lose calls all the time on AT&T, often from moving from one room of my house to another. Service is terrible, though iphone does enough other things well that I don't care that my phone service is crappy. I rather send an email or text than talk on the phone anyway.

verizon and i'm currently with sprint. and all i can say is that i can't wait till my wifes contract ends with sprint(i'm on her family plan) so i can get her to switch to verizon. out of the two verizon is the best. you can be in the middle of no where and still be able to make a call, but with sprint you can end up in roaming or not being able to contect. when i was working a the GM tech center i could never get a single with my sprint phone, while all of my co-workers that had verizon never had a problem. it really sucked when i needed to make a personal call because i would have to go down 7 flights and out to the parking deck just to make a call.

I had Sprint and loved it. When my parents moved to FL and did not have Sprint coverage, I switched to Verizon with them. I also love the coverage with Verizon. I have never had AT&T but my friend who has AT&T never seem to have a signal. The biggest problem that I had when switching to Verizon was that phones that would have normally been free at Sprint were $50-$100. My recommendation would be to go with Sprint with Verizon as a close second.

I've had all three. I didn't like AT&T. They were always dropping my calls. I struggled with reception at times when my buddies with Verizon and Sprint were fine. I'm convinced that if they weren't the only carrier with the iPhone, nobody would use their services... However, in my experiences with travel, I found that the GSM carriers had better coverage in rural areas, not sure why, but that is just my experience. I have been nothing but satisfied with Sprint and Verizon. Sprint is what I'm currently on and have great reception everywhere. They are also cheaper than the others... Just my two cents...

I would have to say go with Verizon. I used to have At&T, I couldn't even get service at my house. Granted I live in California, but Verizon has been most reliable. Even among my friends there is a propensity to hate AT&T due to their terrible coverage.

I have AT&T with an iPhone and will say the service has been spotty in SE MI (Ann Arbor specifically). This is probably due to the number of data intensive phones on their network. As for northern Michigan, I have found service once again spotty anywhere from Cadillac and Ludington north to Frankfort and east to the West Branch area. I do a lot of fishing and have found that the service in the harbors along Lake Michigan is poor to non-existent, but as soon as you are 2-3 miles out in the lake there is full service. Nextel and T-Mobile have comparable service to AT&T in the same area. I think they utilize the same network up there. iPhones, Blackberries, etc all suck so much bandwidth that I think no matter what carrier you pick, you will see decreasing service reliability as the number of smartphones increase.

I live in central Ohio and Verizon seems to be the best around here. In the past I've had Sprint, which was pretty decent, I only had problems with Sprint when out in the middle of nowhere (which a lot of Ohio is) and my last carrier was AT&T which I actually had a lot of problems with. I seemed to never get reception if I was in any kind of a building which really wasn't worth it after awhile. So my vote goes to Verizon.
