OT: Spotify

Submitted by Purkinje on

I just got it. It's changing my life. It will change the world.

Go get an invite: http://www.spotify.com

Picture iTunes, except you just type in the name of the song you want, and it plays. Any song. Anywhere you go. It's free. (Ad-supported, with premium services available.) Go do it.

I've been using this for a week or so. It is incredibly helpful. As a music major, I probably listen to an hour or two of music a day. Sometimes its obscure stuff and this has been great fro trying to find some of it.

I signed up for Spotify on Monday and I got my invitation last night. I love it so far. I especially like how it recognizes my music in iTunes. I just wish you could get Spotify on Linux for free users.

Not with the free version, but why would you need to? If you're online, you have every song available to you. The premium version ($10 / month) lets you store an offline cache of playlists, meaning that you can play songs you specify on Spotify even if you aren't online.

Doesn't Spotify only give you a limited trial for free? I've only ever used Grooveshark, to which I'd apply the same sentiments as the OP to his respective music-streaming service.

The first 6 months are unlimited free streaming, then it's 10 hours/month

an ad-supported free-to-the-user service having no monthly cap on listening hours or a cap on number of plays of a unique track during the first 6 months following creation of your Spotify account but thereafter a cap of 10 listening hours per month and a cap of 5 plays per unique track (the “Free Service”),

But it IS awesome, and I may upgrade to "unlimited" after 6 months...

EDIT: this is from the "terms and conditions" page on their website

I don't understand all the hype for Spotify. For the same price, $10 a month, Rhapsody does the same exact thing and it's been around for a while now. I actually pay $15 a month for Rhapsody so it will work on 3 separate devices, so both me and my girlfriend can use it on our phones at the same time.

In my opinion, only luck is able to make an unknown person famous on Spotify. This platform shows us many different musicians and it is rather difficult to stand out. I prefer to use website here to make me noticeable. However, it works only in the case with good music. Nobody likes to listen to trash
