OT: Sports-related bucket list

Submitted by Magnus on

I was thinking about my Bucket List the other day, and without getting into all the other items, I'm thinking specifically of sports-related goals anyone might have.  I have a few things I want to do:

- Visit every MLB city's baseball stadium.  This is hard because teams are always changing/moving and getting new stadiums, but so far I've been to stadiums for the Tigers, Rays, Cubs, Cardinals, Orioles, Angels, and Dodgers.  Obviously I have a long way to go.

- Dunk a basketball.  I can lay the ball in and grab rim, but not quite dunk.

- Bench press 300 lbs.  Just to say I did it.  I've had shoulder issues for a while, so it's taking me some time to build up to it.  But I'm getting closer and closer.

- Coach baseball.  I played it but haven't coached it.  Once football season is over, it's difficult to get motivated to spend my entire spring coaching, too.

- Become a head football coach.  I'm not ready yet, but I'd like to do that sometime down the road.

What sports-related items are on your bucket list?  I'll try not to steal yours, although I might have to if there's something good . . .

Go to one of the major tennis, golf matches.

Go to the Indy 500

Go to the Superbowl

Go to the BCS NC game with Michigan playing in it (and winning)

Go to the NC game in BBall with Michigan playing in it (don't think this will happen anytime soon)

Go to Fenway and Wrigley (can't believe I still haven't been to Wrigley yet)

I have a few:

(1) Attend an Ohio State - Michigan game in Columbus.

(2) Attend a Real Madrid - Barcelona game in the Nou Camp.

(3) Run a marathon (that will be completed on October 3rd - Twin Cities Marathon).

(4) Go to a Gophers football game with a competent head coach on their sidelines.

(5) Attend playoff hockey games in Toronto and Montreal.

1.  Visit every MLB stadium, been to about 15, so I too have a long way to go.  Note to Magnus, make Fenway a priority, before it's gone.  GREAT place to watch a baseball game.

2.  Visit every Big 10 football venue.  I had achieved this already before the Gophers moved out of the Metrodome.

3.  Catch a live game in Columbus where Michigan actually beats OSU.  Went in 1994 and 2006, sad panda both times.

4.  Go to Wimbledon

5.  Attend the Summer Olympics

6.  Attend a World Series game (perferably with the Tigers playing in it)

I was at the Stanley Cup Finals Game 1 in the United Center, which was amazing.

On my list yet to do:

Attend a Rose Bowl with Michigan in it

Attend a Super Bowl

Haven't thought about this a ton, but I'm interested to see what everyone else says, and start my own list for real

I've seen M play football games in all Big Ten stadiums except the new Minnesota stadium. I'll nail that one down on November 3, 2012.

I've seen M win a football game in every Big Ten stadium except in the 'shoe (0 for 1 when I've been there). I need to nail this one down, too. The sooner the better.

I was at the '99 Penn State game at State College. Brady threw two late fourth quarter TD passes to bring Michigan back to win. It was incredible.

You deserve a special place in heaven for going to the Purdue game in '96. That was a nasty game. The worse game I ever saw on the road was the '96 Northwestern game. M was up 16-0 at the start of the 4th quarter and lost 17-16. It took until January 1, 1998 to get that bad taste out of my mouth.

saveferris

That Purdue loss WAS brutal, plus it was bone-chilling cold all day.  I was at that Northwestern loss in '96 too, but I was also at the 2000 54-51 loss to Northwestern, which I can assure you was much worse to watch.

Best road win I ever saw was probably the 1994 Michigan / Notre Dame game which Michigan won 26-24 on a last second Remy Hamilton FG.  That was pretty sweet.  Close second would be the 2003 Michigan / MSU game if only because I was sitting in the student section for that one and they were all pretty irritated at watching Chris Perry hammer them all day.

1. Coach Baseball (currently doing it, very rewarding, very time consuming!  Social life went out the window.)

2. Attend the Rose Bowl (with Michigan in it.)

3. Attend a BCS Championship (with Michigan in it.)

4. World Series Game

5. Catch a Fly Ball

6. Visit every MLB Stadium (hard to believe I've only been to 5!)

7. Get back to playing hardball in an adult league. (maybe even bat lefty.)

8. Watch a football game in a new football stadium every season.  (I've only been to the Big House, ND, Bobby Dodd, Sanford Stadium (UGA), Rutgers Stadium.)

9. Learn to play golf (i'm dreadful.)

2.  Go to a World Cup Finals match.

sell your soul, buy some ND gear and give Slobberin' Lou some sob story. He's a member at Augusta.  So is Spurrier.  That's one of the reasons he took the South Carolina job...because Hottie Johnson got him in at Augusta.

Be at the Rose Bowl when Michigan wins.  I was out there after the '03 season and even though we lost by 14 points, it was one of the best days of my life.  Absolutely incredible.  I can't imagine how great it would be to watch Michigan win that game.

Watch Michigan win it all at the Frozen Four.

-I want to go to England, Scotland, and Ireland for 2 weeks and play golf.  I want to play the old course at St. Andrews, and any other historical course I can get on.

-I would also like to go to a tailgate for a big time SEC game, because I know the atmosphere is different from anything else, maybe Alabama/Auburn or something like that.

-Doesn't matter what course they're on, but I want to see every major golf tournament, US Open,Masters, PGA, British, Ryder Cup and the Player's Champ (yes, I know the masters and players are always at the same course).

Tater

June 2nd, 2010 at 10:04 AM ^

I would like to play Pebble Beach, St Andrews, TPC Sawgrass, and Augusta.  I'm guessing that I make it to Sawgrass and maybe Pebble Beach.  If I ever made it to Europe and was playing St Andrews, I would definitely save a day to play Carnoustie, just to stand on 18 and see if I could play it better than Jean Van de Velde did the day he turned his last name into a verb.

pdgoblue25

June 2nd, 2010 at 10:08 AM ^

That's why I said courses I can get on, I'm not sure which courses are private.  Carnoustie, Troon, Turnberry, The Belfry, St. George ect.... Everytime I see a replay of Van de Velde it's like I'm watching it for the first time, still can't believe he pulled his driver again in the playoff.

on the Wii allows you to play some great courses, and play them better than you would ever have a chance to in real life.  Quite a bit cheaper, too, and you can drink as much as you want and take frequent bathroom breaks if necessary.

1. Weekend pass to the College World Series in Omaha.

2. Visit every MLB park (I've done 20 stadiums over 19 teams as I've been the Astrodome and Minute Maid in Houston)

3. Michigan-OSU game in Columbus

4. Attend a World Cup Final in Europe

5. Bonus to #1, Umpire a CWS game. I'm hoping to start umpiring college in the next 2 years.

6. Be asked to umpire for the MLB/MiLB. Not that I'm sure I would go due to the lifestyle those guys have to endure in the minors. Just the invitation would mean a lot.

7. Take in an Australian Open. While it lacks the prestige of a French Open or Wimbledon, it would seem like an awesome visit.

I've already taken care of one would be on this list, working for a pro team. Last season, and returning this season, I'll be working for the Texans as a "Tailgate Ambassador." I walk around as quality assurance, letting you know your food is the most delicious thing ever, not because it makes you feel better, but because, damn, NFL tailgaters in Texas can BBQ/cook.

I want to work up the courage to actually go to one of the student-wide open tryouts that RichRod holds. There is a negative % chance of actually doing anything worthwhile but I think it would be really cool to say that I went.

I just picture it turning out like the Philly Eagles tryouts in It's Always Sunny.

I'm just trying to understand the mind of  the enemy here.

I'm pretty simple. I don't have anything I just HAVE to do, though I would like to get to a world series sometime. I have a recommendation for all of you, though. Go see the Harlem Globetrotters with your Father and or Son/Daughter. Still one of the best shows around, and sooooo reasonable.

I second the Globetrotters.  It's definitely a great family show.  I was watching them on TV the other day and they did a great bit with Brandi Chastain and recreated here taking off her shirt.

Nice list of iteams. I've been lucky so far as I have been to quiet a few...

I've seen Michigan blow Rose Bowls (see 15-0 lead vs. ASU to lose)  in person, and been to two they won, vs. USC (22-14) and over Washington State for the National Title! I saw Morrison score the OT winner at Riverfront in Cincy for the NCAA title and Weber call a TO Michigan didn't have vs UNC (the Final Four, especially in New Orleans is awesome). I've seen Michigan win in all Big Ten Football Stadiums (Griese to Streets in Columbus for the 10-9 win was awesome, I'm 1-1-1 in Columbass, but the blow out at Penn State in 1997 may have been the best!) but Purdue - how f-ed up is that! Tiller won two games vs Michigan in his career, but in WL, and I was at both - UM blew a 24-0 halttime lead with Henson at QB, and then RR's first year. Don't worry, I'm going this year too! Of cuorse, I am waiting till 2012 to get the Gophers back on the list. I can also add South Bend, the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowls as Stadiums I've seen UM win at!

I'd like to see UM in person win at IU in hoops and at Breslin too.

I'd like to see the Daytona 500 (been to Indy 500 - very loud!), play a round of golf at Agusta and Pebble Beach, go to the World Cup Final in Europe (with the US in it! that could happen, right?). To see Michigan play at the College World Series would be awesome too. I also want to throw out the first pitch at an MLB game, and I want the Tigers to win another World Series!

Catch a marlin or similar type ocean fish.

Watch Team USA win a hockey gold.

Watch the Patriots win the AFC title game in a snow bowl in Foxboro (too specific?  Its the only pro football scenario I could think of addiing -- it'd be more fun than a neutral-site Super Bowl).

are in my sights and I think I can reasonably accomplish in next couple of years:

I live in Atlanta, and while I'm no SEC fan, I do want to experience some more of the traditions you can find a mere a couple hours away that I have yet to take in.

1. Attend Auburn-Alabama game, partly to experience the tradition and partly to compare  to Mich-OSU. Anyone got tickets?

2. Tailgate at Ole Miss. By all accounts, this is a major major treat--food, drink, dress, beautiful southern co-eds, etc.

3. Attend a Tennessee game. Been to many of the big venues in the midwest. Want to see how they do it in Knoxville.

include many of what has already been mentioned.......  Superbowl, Indy 500, Kentucky Derby, etc.

However, I would die perfectly happy if I had to focus only on a college football/basketball themed list.  The list would include, in no particular order:

  • Attend a Rose Bowl game (Had multiple chances, most notably U of M v Texas when I had tickets in hand).
  • Attend the Final Four (Had a chance here also, 1993, my freshmen year at the U.  Some of my hall mates drove down.)
  • Attend an away game at every Big Ten stadium.  About halfway there now.
  • Attend football games at the stadiums of various noteworthy programs, ideally against Michigan, but not a prerequisite.  I have been to see Michigan at ND.  I saw Auburn play at Florida.  I have seen Florida play at FSU.  I'd like to go to Clemson, Alabama, and Tennessee.  If an opportunity came up for some other relevant programs, I wouldn't pass it up.
  • I have been to a National Championship football game (the 2000 Sugar Bowl with FSU and Vick's VT).  I would most certainly like to go to another if/when Michigan makes it.
  • Not a high priority on my list, but I'd like to see Michigan play at Cameron Indoor.  As long as the challenge continues, I'm sure that I'll have my chances.

1. Red Wings game 7 of the Stanley Cup final...  winning in OT would be nice, but I'll settle for the win in regulation.

(Side note...I went to Game 4 of the SJ series this year...the one where Franzen was on fire with a hat trick and then some, and I have to say that game was easily the most fun hockey game I've been to. On that night, the Joe was rockin' like I've never seen. So add that one to the things I have attended.)

2. Attend the Winter Olympics

2a.  Take a ride in a bobsled on an Olympic course

3. Attend a Michigan bowl game (I'm almost embarrassed to put this one on the list as something I've yet to do)
