OT - Sports Movies

Submitted by TomW09 on
At the end of the summer I decided to embark upon a journey that would assuredly reap uncountable rewards. That journey has been long and arduous, but it is slowly approaching its end. Last August I decided to create something that combined two of my favorite pastimes: drinking beer and watching sports. Thus, I began compiling a Power Hour of sports movies. The project contains both classic sports movies as well as non-sports movies that have memorable sports scenes. It certainly hasn't been easy, but I'm getting there. It's getting to the point where its pretty tough, so that's where you come in. I currently have a product that has 35 scenes in it. I have a small list of movies/scenes that I know will be added. Then I have some wiggle room. I need some suggestions and help to finish this bad boy off. Right now there are some movies with multiple scenes. Ideally there will be exactly 60 movies represented with 60 scenes. Lists? Lists: Movies Already In (Scene in Italics)
  • Caddyshack - Ty putting, ending with "Thank you very little"
  • Air Bud - The dog comes out and suits up to play
  • Ferris Bueller - What's the score? - Nothin-nothin - Who's winning? - The Bears

I love that movie! My gf just doesn't get it and rolls her eyes when I turn it on. I love this quote. "I have one rule pods, and that is never borrow money from your ex girlfriend who happens to be a stripper...and you broke that rule, you better be sweet to her holmes!!!"

Pedro Cerrano home run: "Fuck you Joeboo, I do it myself" Any Given Sunday: Al Pacino speech. Why do I even need to suggest this? White Men Can't Jump: Dunk scene. Easy. Tin Cup: the water balls Rocky 4: Siberian training montage Little Giants: The Annexation of Puerto Rico A League of Their Own: Really??? If you must anything that does not include Rosie O'Donnell. Bring It On: Tell me you're joking, please. Cheerleading does not equal a sport Drumline: Are you making a sports movie montage or a band geek montage?

A League of Their Own - There's no crying in baseball scene. Major League: Vaughn throws a wild pitch, which Harry Doyle calls "Juuuuust a bit outside." Cerrano scene: "Straightball, I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid." End with last putt scene from Caddyshack.

...Rocky 4 you should include a couple of Duke's speeches, specifically: "Now you're the one..." monologue just prior to the Rocky 4 training montage. "This is your whole LIFE here!" near the end of the Drago fight. I'm also a sucker for Mickey's ghost in Rocky V: "Get UP you son of a B*TCH, because Mickey LUVS ya!" Yeah, daddy didn't love me enough growing up.

If you are a tigers fan at all, this clip needs to be in it. It would fit perfectly with about ten minutes to go.

If you want to watch something new, I suggest watching Lagaan. It is an Indian film (has subtitles) but the movie is a great underdog story revolving around the sport of cricket (not exactly popular in the states). I can honestly say that it is easily one of the best movies I have seen.

This movie if full of greats scenes and quotes. Nuke Laloosh!,"Are we gonna fuck or what?" ------------------------------------------------ [Larry jogs out to the mound to break up a players' conference] Larry: Excuse me, but what the hell's going on out here? Crash Davis: Well, Nuke's scared because his eyelids are jammed and his old man's here. We need a live... is it a live rooster? [Jose nods] Crash Davis: . We need a live rooster to take the curse off Jose's glove and nobody seems to know what to get Millie or Jimmy for their wedding present. [to the players] Crash Davis: Is that about right? [the players nod] Crash Davis: We're dealing with a lot of shit. Larry: Okay, well, uh... candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she's registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let's get two! Go get 'em. -------------------------------------------------------------- Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: Ooh, I've heard of stuff like this. Annie Savoy: Yeah? Have you heard of Walt Whitman? Ebby Calvin LaLoosh: No. Who's he play for?

Under movies you're considering, I'm hoping you meant The Babe starring John Goodman, not Babe as in the Pig who would eventually take residence in the city.

I watched "The Express" the other day for the first time and think you should add that one to your list. The story of Ernie Davis is quite remarkable and the movie did a good job of telling it.

... running on the beach scene. Man, that has to be one of the best. Also, here are but a few quotes. "I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel His pleasure. " "You can praise God by peeling a spud if you peel it to perfection. Don't compromise. Compromise is a language of the devil. Run in God's name and let the world stand back and in wonder. " "Yeah, he's fast! But he won't go any faster. He's a gut runner, digs deep! But a short sprint is run on nerves. It's tailor-made for neurotics. " Also, Clark and Rusty Griswald running to Wally World to the same theme song.

For all the comments I will probably get for this I have to say "Bend it like Beckham" was a good movie. Besides that you have to look at "Goal: The Dream Begins" and as long as I'm talking about soccer "Shaolin Soccer" is pretty awesome and has some good scenes that should be considered. Besides that you don't have "The Program" which is like a water downed college equivalent of "Any Given Sunday" or "Necessary Roughness" which is kind of cheesy but has some good moments worth remembering. But my all time favorite sports moments are from "Friday Night Lights"

Your compilation must include The Program, specifically the clip where ESU, the fictional school in which the movie takes place, plays The University of Michigan. There is a cameo by Bo. I was a student when this movie came out. The QB at ESU is a Heisman candidate as is the QB for the Michigan, who I'm pretty sure was fictional. ESU ends up losing to Michigan and the audience in the theater was cheering as if it was a real game. Good Times. PS. The cast includes Halle Berry

The real one, not the abomination. Scene depends on how PG-13 you want to be or not. As for PG and under, Little Giants, to the effect of "that's my daughter, and she's pissed".
