Former Michigan State safety Roderick Jenrette and current Spartans wide receiver Fred Smith both received jail time Friday for their roles in an on-campus fight last year.

Jenrette, dismissed from the team in November, was sentenced to 90 days in jail. He pled guilty last month to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault stemming from a Nov. 22 incident at a campus residence hall, which took place following a fraternity potluck event.

Smith was sentenced to five days in jail plus 18 months of probation and 150 hours of community service after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit assault and battery.

...about how Smith will be permitted back on the team, and how we'll get another column by Drew Sharp about how this is evidence that Dantonio's one step removed from the Curia and further evidence that "Saw" was based on RichRod.

But, really, that's just noise that's part of being Michigan these days. I sincerely hope that Smith does get a second chance and makes the most of it. Dumb, dumb thing to do but hopefully he gets past it.

This is unbelievable. I've said this before but I'll say it again...if MSU was an even-slightly respectable institution, Dantonio would be canned. But of course they'll just sweep this under the rug cause they're garbage.

Yes, because MSU is the only program to have a kid get in trouble.

I have a lot of respect for Mack Brown. I think he is a classy guy that cares more about the members of his team than the average coach. Below is a link to a story were a Texas player assaulted another student. Is Texas not a 'even-slightly respectable institution' to you? Should Mack Brown get sacked?

I didn't know you could be sentenced to five days in jail. I assumed the minimum sentence was 30. Five days seems rather pointless.

Why does mlive refer to this as a "fight?" A fight is what happens when two people consent to resolve their differences physically. This was a premeditated gang attack in ski masks against innocent students, some of whom were female, in their home.

What pisses me off worse is that the media attacks UM with the same ardor with which they coddle Misdemeanor State. I am not asking for the media to suddenly turn into UM shills, but they could at least treat both schools equally. Right now, they are muckrakers where UM is concerned, but shills for MSU.

That is not the least bit objective, fair, nor balanced.

I agree 100%. I've seen a lot of on campus fights, where two guys start jawing and one punches the other and they swing and grab for a while before they get separated. That is nothing at all like what happened here.

This is closer to a guy waiting in an alley and ambushing someone with a crowbar.

If the media was more honest in portraying what these morons did there is no way Dantonio could sweep it under the rug so easily.

Especially since the more appropriate legal term is battery. When you act in a menacing way toward an individual and place them in fear of immediate harm, that is assault. When you actually bust into a frat house with ski masks and clobber students randomly, that is battery.

Not the Altar Boys that we've come to know and respect. I sincerely hope RR has the stop watch timing our stretching sessions so we don't go over by 10 minutes again while the choir boys are behind bars. No story there, what trouble can they get into while locked up. FreeP in the meantime is secretly spying on our practices waitin for their next great story to break........assholes.
