OT: Spartans as national champs
While reading this (WARNING: Freep) article I noticed in one of the photos (#11 of 13, in case anyone wants to take a look) that Sparty claims six (!) national championships in football:
http://www.freep.com/article/20110317/SPORTS07/103170463/MSU-s-Jones-Go…
Indeed, the Wikipedia page on the program says the same thing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michigan_State_Football#National_champions…
Of note, I see "AP" in there only once. Is that why Sparty doesn't brag about those? Or, do they just not know their history?
Who cares? I've got a lot of beer to drink today. And besides, it's sparty.
Doesnt the University of Chicago have as many B10 titles as probation U? Pretty hard to have that many National Titles when you cant even win your own conference.
Yep, with State getting a share of the title this past year, they finally moved into a tie with Chicago, both having 7 titles.
If you take into the sharing
- Michigan State 4 1/3
- Chicago 6 1/3

According to college football data warehouse, they have 8 total national championships conferred by anyone...
http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/div_ia/bigten/michigan_state/all_n…
but only 4 "recognized national championships".

Also according to CFDW, msu has 9 total conference championships, including the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Excluding that, they have 7 total conference championships. Only 3 of those were outright (1965, 1966, 1987). The other 4 (1953, 1978, 1990, 2010) were shared. Going back to the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, though, 1903 was shared and 1905 was outright.

Also also, Michigan has more (shared or outright) Big Ten conference championships since 1990 (8) than michigan state has EVER.

What is a great reality check for Sparty (less conference titles in their entire history than we have had in the last 20 years) is also a depressing stat for us.
Only 8 Big Ten titles since 1990...that's unacceptable. I pray that Hoke turns that stat around. We have now gone 6 straight seasons without a Big Ten title. That last time we had a drought that long, Dwight Eisenhower was in office.

Yeah! UNACCEPTABLE!

National championships in FBS football are mythical. I actually dreamt that I won one last night myself. By my unofficial count, I how have fifty-eight of these national titles all to myself. I am a winner. A big winner.

You must be hanging with Charlie Sheen huh?
Alabama, is that you?

by the way state counts their national championships, if michigan were to do the same we'd have 3 or 4 more. i'm pretty sure there was one in the 70's and one in the 80's where michigan was voted #1 at the end of the season by someone. it's the same method that alabama uses to count 100 national championships
i believe state has 3 undisputed national titles

What details, if any, do you personally remember from those seasons where Michigan was voted #1 at the end of the season? I'm not trying to duck doing research, it sounds like you know what you're talking about and can give a good condensed version for a not as knowledgable fan. Also, those 3 State titles were all in the 50s and 60s, correct?
but i have a reliable source
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_football_national_championships_in_NCAA_Division_I_FBS
they started noting "consensus" national champs in 1950 apparently. MSU claims 1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965 and 1966 national titles. they were only "consensus" winners in '52, '65 and '66.
in fact, in 1955, ONE poll voted MSU national champs while the 15 others all voted for Oklahoma. in 1957, ONE poll again voted for MSU while 8 voted for Auburn and 6 voted for tOSU. (1951 saw 5 different teams get voted #1 at the end of the season)
so by that same logic we should count michigan's national titles where they received just one poll's backing:
1964
1973
1985
so we conservatively claim 11 national titles while MSU and Alabama are claiming national titles whenever anyone votes for them. thus, we should start claiming 14 national titles. either we have 14 and MSU has 6. or we have 11 and MSU has 3
Bravo. You win the thread. +1

Final Four tournament, bah-hahaha! I got them one and DONE.
I think Sparty will pull the first game out of their asses by disrupting UCLA's tempo. But there is no way they win a de facto road game against Florida in Tampa. Tom Izzo's last game behind the MSU bench will probably be a 20-point loss to Florida.
I also have them losing to FL...but Tom Izzo's last game as MSU coach?? Where do you get all this amazing inside information from?
He is in his own little world. He still refuses to give Izzo any credit as a coach.
This thread title is awful. I figured they had won the bobsledding national championship or something.
They did win the Men's Water Polo national title two or three years ago. I know one of the guys on that team. He's funny as hell.
wow, that thing is real...
Michigan's solar car:
When talking to Sparties, they claim they have won all these football national championships back in the day but the only two groups that recognized championships back then were the AP and the UPI. So according to that, they have one recognized by the AP, thats it.
