This guy was assaulted and beat to death by his wife and two sons because he changed the channel to watch Germany play Australia. What the fuck.

I thought the exact same thing. This incident really has nothing to do with soccer fan craziness.
I think good, old-fashioned religious nuttery is to blame here (augmented by mushroom tea, perhaps.)
Just to add to the peculiarity - the show the family wanted to watch was a gospel program. That program might have been the very one teaching its viewers to "turn the other cheek" or "don't kill your family."

The soccer fans are rabid, there's no arguing that. I remember the player who was shot dead shortly after landing in his own country after he scored on own goal in the world cup. It's crazy!
