OT (sort of): Hump Day Quiz
This is the second weekly quiz I am posting. A couple of requests: PLEASE -- DO NOT LOOK UP THE ANSWERS AND THEN POST THEM. The point of this is to have some fun and see the variety of responses we get. There is no shame in posting a wrong answer. But if your need for instant gratification is uncontrollable and you must look up the answers, then please do not post a response. Just enjoy reading the wrong answers of those less anal than you.
SUGGESTION: After reading the question, scroll to the bottom immediately and post your answers/guesses. (If you think you only know some of the answers, that's okay. Just give a partial response, or take wild guesses.) Then go back and see what everyone else said. That way, you will avoid any spoilers and won't have your answers influenced by others who may not be as smart as you (see what I did there?). Thank you and enjoy the quiz.
THE QUESTION:
Michigan has appeared in 19 Rose Bowls, winning 8 of them. (This would be a great year to make it 20, given that the Rose Bowl is a playoff site.) Below are the 8 games that Michigan has won. (Remember, the Rose Bowl is played in the year following the regular season. Thus, the 1997 team played in the 1998 Rose Bowl.)
Name the player who was named MVP in each of Michigan's winning Rose Bowl appearances:
1902 M 49 Stanford 0
1948 M 49 USC 0
1951 M 14 Cal 6
1965 M 34 Oregon State 7
1981 M 23 Washington 6
1989 M 22 USC 14
1993 M 38 Washington 31
1998 M 21 Washington State 16
I was only able to correctly name 3 prior to researching the answers. Correct answers will be posted tomorrow morning, along with some interesting commentary/history on some of the MVPs.
Okay, guys and gals, have at it. And come January, let's make it Rose Bowl 20! Go Blue!
There is great shame in posting the wrong answer. Those who do so should go to the box and sit for two minutes. And feel shame.
1993 Grbac
1998 Woodson
I could try to make up names for the others but sounds like a lot of work...
1989: Derrick Walker
1993: Tyrone Wheatley
1998: Brian Griese
I know Greise won the MVP in '98 because there was that unforgettable scene in the broadcast booth with Keith Jackson saying "I'm standing next to his [Rose Bowl MVP's] proud daddy!"
I remember that. I also remember that during the trophy presentation, Lloyd Carr grabbed Lynn Swann's mic and said, "His old man never won this trophy!" It was a nice rare moment of levity from Lloyd.

I was pretty sure on 5, guessed on 1 and was clueless on 2.
Only question that matters: is football season officially 1 month away? Yes, yes it is
also, I think the score of the '98 game was 21-16 not 20-16....
