OT: Social Security Disability Benefits

Submitted by heckdchi on
My wife is currently in the process of applying for this. Just curious if anyone else has any experience with this. In particular, how long does it take once the initial application is completed for a decision to be made? Any other information any of you could share on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Helpful post and closed with a zinger.  Nice form.  Duely appreciated.  Blazefire had it right above.  It is taking a long time nowadays due to the sheer volume of questionable applicants.  However, my father-in-law just recently got approved in less than three weeks because he had a pretty cut and dry case.  if it requires any sort of investigation, judgement, or additional proof, the process could take a very long time.

I tried asking on their message boards and all I got was, "why is the Big Ten trying to destroy college sports" and "dude, that Demar Dorsey is straight gangsta!"

As to your question, it is often a long, drawn out proces applying for disability.  If this is her first application it will typically be denied because they tend to deny everyone's first application.  Most of the individuals I've worked with in the community that receive disability finally got it after the third application.

Don't get discouraged by the denials, just keep reapplying.  Do you have a disability lawyer helping? They can typically speed up the process just because of their familiarity with the system.

edit: it will always take longer than the SSI Board tells you it will.
