I don't know soccer, but we're fielding a whole squad of NOTY candidates.
OT: Soccer - US U-23 MNT vs El Salvador Open Thread
Terrence Boyd!!! 1-0 USA!!!
Nice work by Brek on that goal -- now for the bitchfest from ES that always seems to occur.
Corona hacked, yellow given to #8 of El Salvador.
Okugo given a yellow.
Edit: He had a previous one, so will be suspended next game.
ES is a disgrace to the game of soccer. Flopping. Cynical challenges, complaining, I am fuming right now.
But we can't if we don't stop playing so sloppy and rushed. We need Jared Jeffrey in the middle to slow things down and posess the ball. Also, what the hell is so bad about a pass backwards? I want to see more ball movement, less fast break.
Yeah, the early success with the long ball may have us trying that too much. I would also like to see some more possession.
Doing well. He's been one of our better players. Takes most if not all of the free kicks, usually places them well.
Had a nice backheel pass earlier this game, almost got a long ball to Boyd over the top, but it was too tough for him to chest it down.
It's really hard to believe that Adu is still eligible for a U-23 team. I feel like I wrote him off 4 years ago as a MNT contributor.
Phew. El Salvador stole the ball and attacked. Shot missed goal.
Mix looks like shit today. trying to force too much forward, 3 too many touches each time he gets the ball, if KA Gent is watching Diskerud may ride the pine for a while after this one
Dammit, El Salvador scores off the corner. 1-1.
Damn, we have to sub goalies. Hamid injured.
Dang, Freddy, shoot with your right foot!
im disgusted right now. if this were my team we'd be running 1-touch passing drills for an hour after the game was over.
We need to score early in the second half, I think.
possession has been terrible, outside of the goal they have had no real good scoring chances, the back line has been constantly getting burned, the goalkeeping has been very suspect...they deserve to be in the rather large holes they find themselves in right now
they need to win to move on...unless things change, I don't see it happening
Wow, I don't think El Salvador can prevent a goal with the US all over them but I do wonder if they can still revert this match, an early goal would be key for the US in the next half
Just bad man, just bad. This team does not deserve to advance if we don't play one hell of a second half. Jeeze.
I haven't followed the U-23s closely but I am shocked at this following the canada game right now.
So I'm guessing this isn't a good indication of the direction of USNT is going to go in a few years. Losing to a country where I'm pretty sure soccer is played inside on grass while hockey is played outside on the ice, followed by a poor performance against country that sounds like a quaint Caribbean island you'd love to honeymoon to (except it isn't), definitely isn't installing me with confidence.
This teams always plays at the top when they go against the US or Mexico, there's nothing new about this, the Canada game OTOH is what has this team in this situation, always tricky with short tournaments like this, also a 3-4 years span without outstanding players rarely affects a national team in the long run, the problems come when you chain cycles without good players. Look at Mexico for example they didn't go to the olympics the last time, they are still in good shape.
great shot by Freddy Adu...maybe now the US will get some life
Yeah, but he always wants to go left.
it has really been annoying me today
It's interesting how soccer is such an immigrant-dominated game, not just here in the U.S. but in a lot of developed countries, too (especially France, the Netherlands and Germany). I don't know if it's just a function of the sport drawing players from the working classes, but it's striking.
This is something about soccer that really annoys me, I like the fact that the referee is letting the guys collide without blowing the whistle, but all this waste of time is really desperating
HUGE GOAL BY BOYD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, this game just got interesting, hopefully they score before they get too anxious
65th minute...US still needs to win
USA USA USA!!!
HOLY SHIT THE USA LEADS 3-2!!!!!!!!!!!!
How a game this bad(ish) can be so entertaining? I hope the US keep attacking
Yeah, another US goal would be good for my heart.
It's the third game in 5 days, these guys are all tired, that's a large part of why this game is a lot of scrambling.
And the quality is only gonna get worse over the last 20 minutes here as these guys completely wear out.
If they wouldn't have dropped the ball and lost to Canada they could've rested some players for this game, lucky that they'll play Honduras most certainly in the next game and they still have a meaningful game and a day less to rest
Freddy with another assist!!!
Stupid announcer, game's not over yet.
Freddy Adu has single handedly brought this team back from potential elimination
Although I wanted him to play for Ghana, I'm glad he's blossoming on the US team.
73rd Minute: US 3, El Salvador 2
I'm pretty new to soccer fandom. I've followed the EPL the last two seasons. Is there a lot more diving in international soccer as opposed to EPL? Seems like these guys are going down awfully easily.
Watch some Serie A or La Liga (Italian, Spanish) for world-class flopping.
It's really bad in Central America. All of the smaller countries there seem to dive and time waste a lot. El Salvador is by far the worst of the lot, too.
That was just thuggery.
I'd say it's because one of them will be eliminated, so they will waste as much time as the can to assure the score
That should be a red for El Salvador!
WTF, no officials saw that?!?!
we are just biased and completely unreasonable
Obviously Boyd sneezed so hard, it casued blood to flow from his nose and mouth.
seriously? no one noticed Boyd getting jacked in the face? oh ok...
Two bloody noses for the USA on a single play.
This is like a clinic on how not to kill a game off.
It's like we're allergic to possession.
Jesus, hold the ball
Good job, Shea.
Son of a bitch!
Sean Johnson wasn't starting
HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!! 3-3 DAMNIT!!!
Shea just had to kick it out of bounds... match over.
Give me f'in break
I HATE EVERYTHING!!!!!
No Olympics for the USA. Crappy last minute of play.
Wow. I'm at a loss for words.
This group was showing so much promise.
If you play dirty, foul, punch, play-act, and whine, good things eventually come your way.
I had never seen something like this and that was a crappy shot to make it more painful
well...I just lost a lot of interest in the Olympics
At least there is still swimming and track and field.
but yeah, to me the most interesting thing going forward was soccer...I guess I am partial to team sports that aren't olympic basketball
And we've reached our anti-basketball quota for this thread...
I love college basketball. I do not like the NBA...and since the US Team is NBA players and NBA style...I just am not into the USA basketball team
I'll be watching our WNT.
What a sad day for US soccer.
Welp that was an epic fail and a big waste of my time. :(
It's unbelievable that, at that point in the game, the US could allow a guy to carry the ball 20 yards and get off a shot. The whole end of game sequence, apart from the moment in the corner, was just pathetic.
A stranger, more inexplicable collapse. That's just...weird. And terribly soulcrushing. Someone put up some sad animals.
... and the officiating tolerated it.
3-3 is a bitter pill to swallow, but at least the u.s. side was game in the second half.
Honestly, the Olympics and soccer is like watching MLS after a weekend of watching the big boys in the EPL, RealMadric/Barca/AC Milan/etc. Sad for the younger US players not getting the international experience...but it's not a huge deal
Very few of the top players are even eligible, and most of them (or their clubs) won't allow them to play a third-rate competition in the soccer world's eyes.
UCL <> World Cup
Euro Cup <> Copa America
Club league championships
That it's good enough for Lionel Messi? Most non-European countries take the tournament seriously. We certainly did. It's a shame we lost, and a huge deal that, when we took the tournament seriously, we couldn't manage more than one win against Cuba, El Salvador and Canada when on home soil.
