OT: Soccer - US U-20 WNT vs Germany World Cup Final

Submitted by I Bleed Maize N Blue on

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!  U-S-A!  U-S-A!!  U-S-A!!!

Saturday in Tokyo the US U-20 WNT beat Germany 1-0 to win the Cup.  It was the only goal Germany allowed in the whole tournament (record shutout streak of 610 minutes).  Just before the half right back Crystal Dunn had a great run up the right side, beating a defender and sending a cross into the box, and F Kealia Ohai put it home.  G Bryane Heaberlin and the team did a great job of keeping the Germans from scoring.  (They had scored at least 3 goals in 4 of their 6 games, including a 3-0 win over the US.)

Captain defender Julie Johnston won the Bronze Ball as the tournament's third best player.

Prior to the final, Japan won 3rd place by beating Nigeria 2-1.

The women need a league to play in so they can stay in the USA.  In Europe, the big club teams sponsor a women's team.  But MLS is not to the level that they can do that.

What if NFL teams sponsored a women's soccer team?  They obviously can't sponsor a women's (Amreican) football team.  Could be a nice goodwill move and a good PR move.

Just an idle thought.

Third time's the charm?  I sure hope there will be a women's soccer league that will stick around and not fold after 3 yrs.  It's important to have players continue to develop after college.  Abby Wambach is a great example of someone who made an impact in club play to get onto the national team.  (Being paired with Mia Hamm certainly didn't hurt.)

I have doubts many NFL owners would spend the money to sponsor a team.

I've heard that both of the first two leagues were mismanaged. Supposedly the interest and fanbase is big enough, but the leagues have been plagued by bad decision-making and leadership.

I'd love to have a real league. I'd watch women's soccer before tennis and poker, fergodsakes.

Hopefully this isn't a double post, but it looks like my attempt to post an hour ago failed.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this because I probably wouldn't have seen it in the regular news media with CFB, NFL, MLB and US Open going on right now.

I loved the video and seeing that sweet enthusiasm of the young women who were also well-spoken.  They are also apparently talented enough to carry on the US Womens Soccer winning tradition for the next decade.
