OT - So How is Your Summer Sports/Exercise Routine Going?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

There are a lot of jocks and quasi-jocks on this board, and with the beautiful Michigan weather having been here for 2 months, you've had time to get outdoors on some type of regular basis.   I know many of you are into your summer routines - golf leagues, softball, running, biking, etc.  Some will have various tournaments, races and championships to compete for.

So the question is:  How are you doing on your summer sport(s)?  Is your handicap or waistline going down?   Is your bench press or running pace getting stronger?   Any big races or matches you've had or are coming up?

I had high cholesterol and elevated Liver Enzymes after being checked when my brother passed away in March.

Since then, I've made pretty drastic changes to my diet, exercise, and alcohol intake.

Results have been pretty dramatic!  Down about 30 lbs although I avoid the scale as it doesn't tell the whole tale...

Still have quite a ways to go, though...

hitting my driver 270-290, irons are solid, putter a little streaky.  Beer consumption average, winning a skin or two in our 24 man weekend game.

Looking forward to the next several days - LOVE LOVE LOVE hot weather golf.

I have a lot of playing partners who are all "no way, its way too hot."  I don't get it.  The ball flies forever, the greens are usually true (albeit fast), the beer girls are wearing nothing, the beer tastes really, really good, and you usually feel like you get a good workout.  Hot golf is the best golf for me.

of the Spring recovering from fairly intensive cartilage/microfracture surgery on my knee.  I really have not been able to do much that I usually do, but I am playing full rounds of golf (riding) at this point and that is further along than I thought I would be.  I CANNOT hit my driver for whatever reason, it is an OB pull-hook waiting to happen, so I am playing entire rounds of golf with irons and a trustee 20 year old five wood.  But I'm playing, and that is good enough for now.

Beer consumption way down due to one year old baby who never sleeps.

My quest to get back into running shape after my December hospitalization is actually going rather well. Since March, when I was cleared to do the heavier exercise, I've been walkinf 4-6 miles per day and incorporating some strength training into it, although the latter had been part of the routine before. For the last couple months, I've been very gradually incorporating running into the 4-6 miles and am now doing about half that distance while running each day now. A fairly good recovery so far.

Got a fitbit in May and I am sticking to it pretty well.  It will take some time to work my way down to a reasonable weight.  Like Rome, my gut was not built in a day.

Ultra runner here

This summer has been pretty brutal to train in with all the heat, but getting it done. Did 29 miler this past Saturday that got a bit ugly with the humidity.

August and September are my race months, Marquette 50k in August, Barkley Fall Classic "50K"(more like 60K) and Rock Creek Stump Jump 50K in September. Will really be a test to see if I can knock out two ultra races in 2 weeks which I've not done before and they're both mountainous difficult trail races. Should be good times.

Hopefully headed up north to train on the North Country trail around Mesick this weekend. Really hilly and really nice trail up there.

Down 20 pounds since December. Stopped eating after 7:00 pm, stopped eating until I was full, cut way down on pop. Never was a drinker, so that wasn't an issue. Went from 210 to 190. Went back to basketball 1-2x a week and am getting the band back together for a Gus Macker. Golfing 2x a week; once in my league, and once with my 75 year-old uncle. His ball-control dink and dunk offense can get you in the end. Never hits it farther than 180 but is almost always straight. However, I found out I need a left hip replacement, which I suspected based on increasing pain and mobility issues. Had the right one done three years ago. And I am in my early 40's! So it has been kind of a bittersweet summer. Plan on grinding away on it all summer and getting it done in October so I can watch the eff out of football as I recover.

But I fell off the diet wagon really hard last weekend.  I stopped by a Polish market and spent about $75 on various kinds of Kielbasa.  And then I ate roughly 10 pieces of fried chicken on Sat and Sun.

I also haven't been jogging as much as I should due to the heat.  I wish I was one of those people that can get up and run first thing in the morning, but I'm basically non-functional until I have a bunch of coffee.

an R Lee Ermey motivational alarm on my cellphone in the morning?

"Private Pyle has dishonored himself and dishonored the platoon. I have tried to help him. But I have failed. I have failed because YOU have not helped me. YOU people have not given Private Pyle the proper motivation! So, from now on, whenever Private Pyle fucks up, I will not punish him! I will punish all of YOU! And the way I see it ladies, you owe me for ONE JELLY DOUGHNUT! NOW GET ON YOUR FACES!"

/got back on the diet wagon yesterday.  Grilled chicken breast and salad.

The cycling is better than the running right now.  I was doing fine up until about 3 weeks ago, and then the heat really hit and I lost about a minute per mile from one run to the next.  I've been clawing back, but a lot of days the last couple weeks I've walked outside thinking "I'd much rather be on my bike", so that's what I do.  I'm fairly proud that I made it through the big hurdle of family vacation this past week and worked out 6 of 8 days, which is practically unheard of for me.

Got really sick of running as my standard workout, so I started using my unpowered push mower to cut my big, hilly lawn. It takes about 3 hours and I've been carrying between 45-70 pounds in a backpack. It's exhausting but pretty much the best exercise I've found so far. I still mix in runs, yoga and other random stuff throughout the week too

I'm just currently running after months of not being able to do anything because I had surgery to repair a torn acl. I'm allowed to run for 1 minute and then walk 30 seconds. Every other day. Only 8 more weeks until I'm fully recovered!

I haven't sat down to a plate of meat in 4 months and started walking 3-5 miles and lifting 4 times a week. I'd expect better results, but at 50 nothing happens as quickly as it used to.

Summer has been good. Wouldn't mind playing more golf.

is a good score.  Unless you can really play a lot and practice, low 80s is a tough ask.  I can basically write 85 on my scorecard before the round and be within one shot of it either way by the end of the round.  Every once in a while there is that special day where the putts are failling.  78 last year was my best score ever on a truly testing golf course.  Thought about quiting then and there but then realized I am truly addicted to the game and I could not stop even if I wanted to.

After tearing my ACL back in March playing soccer I managed to still get enough training in to do a 70.3 distance triathlon with my dad in May. Unfortunately all my activity since surgery in June has been Limited to physical therapy. Decent summer to recover from surgery with Copa America and the Euro Cup. Looking forward to Fall - football and hopefully back to a bit of running

Was becoming a bit of a fat ass over the last few years, suffered from plantar fasciitis and even a few rounds of gout and after turning 30 I realized I was gonna die one day. And that day might be a lot closer if I don't take this stuff seriously. Started walking my dogs a lot and gradually got up to jogging and now I'm running 4 miles a day/4-5 days a week and have lost about 25 lbs since February. Signed up for the Chadtough 5k in September which has been a huge motivator to keep it going. Ran a 5k in 26' a couple weeks ago, which is probably the most accomplished athletic achievement I have had in my entire life. So I'd say it's going pretty well.

Well I got my 3rd pr of the year, (turning 45 this year and have been running for 7 years) in three different distances (15k, 25k, 12k trail run). Looking for 1 or 2 more (5k and half marathon). Love the Hanson's training plan.  Doing my tough workouts early (5:45 am) to beat the heat. Tempo run tomorrow!

Lost my 100 pounds 7 years ago (75 before running, 25 after). One of the lucky ones that I've kept it off.

Kudos to all of you out there fighting the good fight. Be a Jackhammer and attack each workout with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind!  (Thanks Coach for the great words of motivation, it gets me going!)

Found a reasonably priced pool to swim in, getting up to go about 4x a week. I'm up to about 4k, but still can't keep up with the older guys that train year-round. Haven't lost any weight yet because swimming makes me hungry all the time, but I definitely feel stronger.

Turned 55 this year.  Was a daily runner for the last 20 years.  Pulled an upper hammy, so started swimming.  Hurt right shoulder swimming, so started rowing.  Hurt lower back rowing, so started sitting on ass, drinking, eating and getting fat.  Thanks for asking.

Finally went in to the doctor when I couldn't sneeze or laugh without pain. Bulging disc in back and severe osteo arthritis. Which is super annoying since I've already had rheumatoid since age nine AND I'm not 100 years old. I'm 45. So I'm trying to swim. But that hurts too. Oh well.
