The report he hopes to transfer to the University of Michigan soon. Not sure why the Lansing news felt they needed to throw that in there. I am fairly certain this kid has close to zero chance of gaining admittance to Michigan with a prior record.

Whether or not it was the hockey team, MSU has had rash of student assaults recently:

Most of the other hockey bloggers and the Daily guys never even touched this. Once the story came out, it just looked so weird that most people took a wait and see approach before speculating. That descision looks very smart now.

He had a previous conviction for arson prior to entering MSU.  I bet he put that on his application under "Extracurricular Activities" and that got him in.  All Spartys need to know how to burn a couch.

So, it looks like the police just want to believe one side of the story here.  The bottom line is that, even if he intrinsically deserved to have the crap beaten out of him, it is illegal to do so in pretty much every village, city, town, county, and state in the US.

If they were defending someone from being attacked, it's one thing, but I still have a hard time believing that they needed to go quite as far as it appears they did.

I say both sides are at fault here, and it should be treated like six people beating up one guy over a girl in a parking lot.

Also, if this non-athlete is charged with all of these crimes, couldn't the two basketball players have at least been charged with something like assault, stalking, or harrassment a couple of years ago?

This looks like typical EL selective enforcement to me.
