There's about a foot of snow on the ground in west Michigan.

The month did a great job recruiting the 5-star Polar Vortex out of the Arctic. Everyone thought January or February would have the lock on it again this year, but the typhoon's personal visit north sealed the deal for November.

Last week I finally caved and started wearing my winter coat.  This morning, I had to break out my scarf.  These are two things I certainly was not anticipating having to do in mid-novmeber.  No denying it, regardless of what the calendar says, winter is back and with a vengence.

Supposedly, we're in for a few inches tomorrow in Metro Detroit, but for the time being, it's just effing cold between being all of 12 degrees at the airport and the 20+ MPH sustained wind where I am at right now. The only time we typically get hammered by snow off the lakes (at least here in Wayne County) is in that rare instance when the wind comes out of the E-SE...it has happened though.

I've been watching the radar hoping some of that would come our way -- but it's been really interesting to watch it just hover over the west side of the state for a couple of days now.

Either way, it's way too early for this. The last few years, the November games have actually been OK. I think the Ohio State game either last year or the year before I ended up in a t-shirt because the sun was so warm. I can't remember the last game we had with actual snow on the ground.

is so fickle---I only have 3 inches on the ground here, but the next school district to the east is shut down. Same with most of them to the southeast of me, down in Cass County, where some have a foot of snow.

So much for fun here, as the normal 25-minute commute is gonna take at least an extra 10 minutes.

I lived in the Phoenix area for 5 years after college before moving back to A2.  There was one day where the temperature in the morning was high 20's, low 30's.  Despite clearly experiencing temperatures much lower than that on a regular basis in Michigan, I don't believe I've ever been colder in my life.

I remember being befuddled by native Floridians complaining when the temps dropped below 45 after I moved to Tampa (later Orlando) from Ohio. Personally, I hated the Florida summers (basically May through October) and thought the winters were the most pleasant season down there.

im not looking foreward to winter in VA, my wife absolutely sucks at driving in snow. She's spun out into on coming traffic 2x in 4 years here and has to go to work no matter the situation.

I like days like today because Facebook reminds me how many of my friends are teachers!

Thankfully, working from home is an option (see how hard I'm working right now?) so I get to enjoy it through the window without having to step outside.

I remember freshman year walking from Alice Lloyd dorm all the way to the Frieze (sp?) Building when it was like 0 degrees.  My face almost fell off from the cold, and as I walked into  class hoping my cheeks might some day move again, I commended whomever came up with the name for that building.

Oh,and it's 30 in DC but we're supposed to get 68 by Monday...  Not too shabby.

Over here in Buffalo NY some of the south towns got well over 3 feet last night while the north side of the city (where I am) got less than an inch. Gotta love lake effect

The standard maps fool people. On a standard two D map it looks like Lake Erie is curving towards Toronto, but kook at Lake Erie on a globe and you'll see that the long axis is aimed at the area in Orchard Park south of the city and around the stadium and the Southtowns region. The long exposed run of open water just brings that moisture up and have it collide with the cold air to bomb that area - but it makes good skiing. I lived in Amherst and Williamsville for 10 years.

dress warmly, drive a well-maintained 4wd and give yourself some extra drive time.  i love all the seasons.  living in northern lower, i always tell the people down here that for us yoopers, this is the banana belt.

love the other seasons too, but don't miss socal (13+ yrs) one minute.   oh, and we don't have fire, mudslide, riot, or earthquake season up here either.

Has been messed up.

Out here in Denver since last Sunday (the 9th)...

73/45

64/18....dropped 15 degrees in 15 minutes and like 35 degrees in 2-3 hours...

19/11

10/0

14/-11

35/1

25/11

32/-1

39/21

A lot of those days had wind chills well below zero and there was at least 4 inches of snow during this period. And now it is back to seasonal weather...high in the 50s and a low in the 20s...for now. At least it is sunny.

As for western NY, that is crazy. It is lake effect snow on steroids...
