OT: Snoop Dogg is now Snoop Lion

Submitted by MGoJeff on

Read it and weep.  Snoop Dogg has had a religious experience and has changed his name to Snoop Lion. Somehow Lionfather, Lionstyle, and the rest don't seem to flow as well...

On the bright side, he's probably just incredibly high and will realize his mistake when he comes off of it.

IMO he's really fallen off in terms of his recent rap albums. I hate to see someone like snoop go, but I do think it was about time for him to leave rap.

Have you ever watched the actual entire Happy Days episode this was taken from?  I did not long ago just to relish it's awesome awfullness and it didnt disapoint.  There was absolutely nothing about the show that wasnt equally ridiculous (you have to look up WHY Fonzi was jumping the shark to really appreciate it) and the acting was beyond cheesey.

Check it out sometime.  To get the full effect i highly recommend doing so under the influence of some brain altering substance.

I have watched that episode, however only once and a long time ago.  I was an avid Nick at Nite watcher (back when they actually played quality, classic tv) and they strategically stayed away from showing too many Happy Days episodes that were made around and after the "Jump the Shark" episode.

I do absolutely love the cheesiness and campiness of that show, and although I don't think the episode is as bad as its current reputation, it truly was way over the top, even by Happy Days standards.

Anyways, I'll give that episode another shot, as I'm sure it probably is an amazing thing to watch whilst under some form of inebriation.

...but I'm not sure a name change is what Snoop's priest was driving at.

"I want to bury Snoop Dogg, and become Snoop Lion. I didn't know that until I went to the temple, where the High Priest asked me what my name was, and I said, 'Snoop Dogg.' And he looked me in my eyes and said, 'No more. You are the light; you are the lion.' From that moment on, it's like I had started to understand why I was there."

I don't know about the him being simply "high" comment. Many artists have had that...epiphany, I guess, and went on to embrace some aspects of rastafari (am I the only Jamaican on mgoblog? Eep).

Capleton, Spragga, Buju, Sizzla are some higher profile converts; they all previously made quite a few gun/violent songs. Beenie? Eh. They call him "Ras Paradox" for a reason.

Anyway, the "lion" moniker references the Lion of Judah, of course. You'll see the reference pop up quite a bit in dancehall; for example, when raising one's fist to acknowledge a tune, oftentimes selectors will ask one to raise one's "lion paw" instead. Dreads = symbolic of lion's mane. And so forth.

I thought Snoop spent some time in August Town over around Judgement Yard (Sizzla's spot). THAT can be quite a serene experience, especially when one is looking for some spiritual cleansing, shall we say.

Produced by Diplo? Mmmm. That will be...interesting, to say the least
