OT: Silverdome soccer match

Submitted by nofunforfu on

I'm heading to the AC Milan v. Panathinaikos FC soccer match tomorrow and will be on the field for pictures/video/interviews afterwards. I need to write a column about the game, but I'm up in the air on who to talk to and what to ask.

Looking for suggestions on who people think I should track down and what to ask them other than "How was the game tonight?"

Thinking about speaking with Onyewu as the only American, but that's obvious. Any ideas on who I should try to get quotes from an what to ask?????

Seedorf would.be a great interview.... Playing Indoors? Netherlands final dirty play fines? Were they a 'flash in the pan' or was this WC a signal their resurgence?

He played great scoring two goals in a win over InterMilan and almost got into a fight with Lucio (trying to head butt him). He of course was on the drama queen French team that had to be the biggest disappointment of the World Cup. He and a couple of his French Panathinaikos  teammates are eager to get France back to respectability.

Cisse's a good guy.  He was opposed to the WC mutiny but didn't want to go against the team captain (Evra).  He's had really bad luck in the WC.  In 2006 he was selected to the French team but suffered a gruesome leg fracture just before and had to be replaced.  Then in 2010 he paid the price as his teammates lost their minds.  I hope he gets one more shot.

I was impressed with the SIlverdome after being vacant for so long. Not a bad venue for an event like this soccer match. I hope more matches like this one come back to the Detroit area.

I was impressed by what they were able to do with the Silverdome as well after being vacant for so long. When I spoke with Onyewu and both coaches after the game, they gave a small complement to the field for what they were able to accomplish. Basically 'it was pretty good for being a little carper over cement ground." Also the fans were quite good, like the Greek fans in the north end and the Milan fans in the south. 30,000 was pretty good and as I looked around, that seemed like a pretty accurate number.

Cisse, I thought, looked quite good on the field. Had good pace, lots of energy and tormented the defense of Milan in the first half.

The game served, I think, as another example of why goal-line technology may need to be implemented soon. Another close goal wasn't counted and if the match was a Champion's League match instead of a friendly I'm sure more media types would be going crazy about it.

That's unfortunate. I don't know the demographics of Baltimore, but obviously there is a large Italian community in and around metro Detroit which may have helped boost sales. Bring Inter and AC Milan to Detroit and I'd run out of fingers and toes to count my relatives who would make the trip for that match.
