As in, he thinks he has a better chance of winning a title, and probably at making it in the NFL. As in, it's not that he hates PSU or absolutely loves USC, it's just the best decision for him to make from a practical standpoint. Implying any money is involved (and that he would so outwardly imply it) is a bit of a stretch imo.

At USC, Redd will run behind an offensive line with 4 returning starters.  At PSU he would have run behind a line with 1 returning starter.

At USC he will be handed the ball by the top returning passer in the entire country, a senior who was the number 1 QB recruit in his high school class, who last year threw 39 TDs and just 7 INTs while completing 69% of his passes.  At PSU he would have received the ball from a former walk-on who last year threw 8 TDs and 5 INTs while completing 54% of his passes.

To help carry the offensive load at USC, Redd has the help of arguably the top two wide receivers in the country in Lee/Woods (not just the best pair of receivers, which clearly they are), who both accounted for over 1,000 yards and double digit TDs a season ago as just a freshman and a sophomore respectively.  In addition to those two he has 5-star talent waiting in the wings in George Farmer and Nelson Agholor who might be able to add a little help if necessary (and if there are enough opportunities to go around.  At PSU, the top three receivers from a season ago have all graduated, leaving Shawney Kersey and his 5 catches for 108 yards and ZERO TDs as the top returner.

If Redd gets tired at USC, there is another 1,000 yard rusher in Curtis McNeal who will happily help out while he gets a breather.  When both are off the field, they get to hang out in Los Angeles, CA, not the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania.

Throw in a superior academic program, getting to play in a bowl game, etc., and this is as close to a no brainer as you can get.

You're assuming Redd takes the starting role. He has to complete with a 1000 yard rusher who averaged 7 YPC, and has years of experience in the USC system. He also has 3 other 4-5 star RBs looking to prove themselves. At PSU, he would have gotten all the snaps and a ton of media coverage. It's not like this is a foolproof plan that can't backfire (in NFl draft terms)

I actually think McNeal is the better player, though you overstate the rest of the depth chart at SC.  DJ Morgan (a 4-star sophomore who is clearly behind McNeal) and Javorious Allen (a 3-star freshman) are the only other guys on the roster.

Even if Redd doesn't win the job, he'll be playing for a glamour team and if he gets 12-15 carries a game he'll have a shot at a 1,000 yard season with a big YPC.  At PSU he'll be slugging away for every yard, even if he gets a ton of carries and will take a beating to do it.

There is pretty much no chance that Redd doesn't end up in the rotation at SC and even if he splits carries with McNeal the ease with which he'll be able to rack up yards/TDs still make the move a no brainer.  LenDale white was the #2 guy and still ended up a 2nd round pick after his junior year, despite basically doing nothing right as far as workouts and the combine go.  That is higher than every PSU back since Larry Johnson, and Redd wasn't going to put up anything close to a Larry Johnson type year with this PSU team.

At least Redd was honest, even if he didn't realize what he was saying at the time.  I'm still waiting for the new, "tough" NCAA to give a program whose corruption gives it a competitive advantage some real punishment.

It's a figure of speech. God, with morons like you and the other couple in this thread that are seriously treating this as an "AH-HAH!" NCAA moment, you can see the transmogfrication of this board into an MLIVEish place is nearing completion.

It was inevitable, I suppose. A mass audience (which Brian has built) is always going to lean toward the dimmer end of the spectrum.

If he stayed at Penn State, there would be less running lanes because their passing game is just bad. He would have to carry 40 times a game because he is the whole offense. He leaves Penn State and goes to USC where having Barkley at QB will give him more running room, plus he will not have to take such a beating because they have other options. Going to USC will help him very much when the draft comes around. Plus the whole playing in a big bowl game thing.

This. Figure of speech as it puts less strain on his body and with usc's weapons he will be a force and may be that extra piece they needed for a NC appearance. This usc team will remind us of our last Henson led team. Amazing offense but lack of depth and experience across the defense to form an above average but not great defense.

Even the starting RB who averaged 7 YPC couldn't see the field more than 15 times per game at USC last year. When you have a passing attack like that, you use it. Redd may be lucky to see 10+ snaps a game. Personally, I'd take the 40 carries a game/centerpiece of the offense thing over being part of a three headed rushing attack which is secondary to the passing game.

After looking thru the "NBCSPORTS" article, and its link to "USC FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK", via the Daily News of Los Angelas, I found neither article included the direct question/answer from Redd that led to that 'Business decision" quote.

The "Daily News" link included "business decision" in its headline, with nothing infromative  to follow regarding that oneliner.

Wondering what the context of the q/a actually was.

Well done journalists.

Didn't read, but I'm guessing what sold him was when Kiffin said "you can stay here and make sugar water, or you can come with me and change the world..." Or something to that effect.
