OT: Should the Browns have kept Hoyer?

Submitted by docwhoblocked on

As a long suffering Browns fan, I look to the Board for wisdom since I certainly do not see it in the Browns management. Should they have made an effort to keep Hoyer?  Is McCown worth a three year deal? Does anyone think tha Manziel will ever be a pro  quarterback?

Momma was UM. Poppa was UM.  Going to U of M games since age 7. Older Bro was UM Younger Bro was UM and I went to Cornell because at 5'11" and 180 lbs I was not going to play LB or strong safety at UM.  Must say I wasn't good enough to play at Cornell either after ripping up my L knee as a sophomore. I did grow up close to Cleveland and my dad also had Browns tickets when I was a kid and I still have my pro afilliations there though I suffer along with my freinds who are Lions fans as well.

Since Sid Luckman, the Bears last "Franchise QB", almost 60 different QB's have started for the Bears.

Something like 13 different starters just in the 90's alone. Only two times a guy started all 16 games during that 10 year period, Jim Harbaugh and Erik Kramer.

Yes they should've but unfortunately the GM Farmer is unwilling to admidt Johnny Football is a bust and Hoyer was unwilling to "play nice" and tutor his currently useless ass.   He wanted a legitimate chance to start and the Browns basically want a QB who will keep the seat warm until such time that JF learns the playbook apparently and can be put back in.

If I was the GM for the Browns I would've resigned Hoyer and then taken the best player (regardless of position) at the 12 & 19 slot.  I would've beefed up the WR's & OL via free agency and given Pettine a contract exension and begged him to not quit this three ring circus.

Three reasons:

1. 30 minute drive vs 3 hours

2. Wife's dad was a charter season ticket holder (had the seats since 1950) and has his name on the front entrance of the stadium on a plaque with the other charter season ticket holders.  When we got married in 2009 he gave us the PSL for the seats (dead on the 50 yard line - row 1 of the third deck) so I'm sort of obligated to keep them.  He passed away last year so when we go we do so in memory of her dad.

3. I'm a masochist

Then again, if there is a thread that polls the board for their thoughts on how Calgary sets up for this year as a force in the CFL, we will know exactly where to go to find the inspiration for such a thread, I imagine. Of course, looking at stats from last year, Calgary is not a bad bet to repeat for the Grey Cup.

Hoyer is 10-6 as a starter.  He's the only QB since the Browns came back with a winning record and they let him go for Johnny Manziel (who sucks) and McCown (I don't even know his first name) who went 1-10 against the NFC South, the worst division in the league.  As  a Brown's fan, this doesn't surprise me.

I've only watched a few Browns games this past season, but Hoyer would be awful until the last couple drives to win the game.  I actually like McCown more.  With the Bears, he was able to win some games with decent numbers (13 TDs - 1 Int in one stretch).  That team in TB was not very good while the Bears might have made the playoffs in 2013 if they would've stuck with McCown over Cutler at the end of the season.

I thought Hoyer played well until the center got hurt and the running game fell apart. At the point the lack of receivers and the alleged interference by the owner/gm doomed him. If he can get picked up by another team why stay with Cleveland?

At this point we have been through 20+ quarterbacks. Did they all suck? It seems like the QB's are not the problem. At this point I can't believe any QB would go to Cleveland unless it's their last option. Even at that point the CFL or retirement is likely the better option.

I have been a Browns fan for 35 years and it seems like the current level of incompetence is at a new level. That is saying something for the Browns. Why would any free agent, especially a QB, choose Cleveland? If I was a free agent and my agent told me to take a deal with Cleveland I would fire him.
