OT: Shots fired outside St. Andrews and The Kingdom in Downtown Detroit

That's a traumatic thing to witness.  Been there many times, and while it's always a little bit sketchy, it's never seemed "guy gets shot and killed right out front" sketchy.

Your reference to EMS being slow, it kind of bothered me, maybe it is because the layperson has no clue what we do for a living.  Whenever there is a report of a fight, domestic, or anything of that type.  EMS stages, we are not permitted to enter the scene.  THe chances of the perp still being on scene is highly unlikely, however, there is a chance he/she could be waiting for anyone (police or EMS) to come and render care to the victim.  This is a classic response when something traumatic happens, as every thinks EMS sholuld be there right away.  I can guarantee EMS was dispatched and they were staged several blocks away, awaiting for the ok from Police to state the scene is safe.  

I felt the need to post this after the poor reporting that came out the other day about Detroit EMs, and thier response times to a shooting of a car full of (I believe) teens, or early twenties.

Sounds terrible. I must say, though, Im impressed with your ability to awaken from gunshots and have the wherewithall to count them at 2 AM...surprised the blood wasnt rinsed away ASAP, considering the outcome. Unfortunate situation.

THE YOUNG MAN TRIED TO RUN DOWN SECURITY IN HIS ALL WHITE EXPIDETION TRUCK AND YES HE WAS FIRED UPON!..... IM SORRY BUT EMS WAS NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAVE A MAN SHOT AT 22 TIMES CLOSE RANGE...... I WATCHED HIM TAKE HIS LAST BREATH.............. TO THE FAMILY I AM GREATLY SORRY BUT WE HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER HE TRIED TO KILL US OVER NOTHING

Wow mgoblog is pretty awesome. We have a witness account from a neighbor, a response from an EMT on the scene, and now a response from one of the men doing the shooting. We got Detroit covered. Either that or somebody is embellishing their role in all of this.

Not wholly true at all stop buying into the crap excuses people make for the state of the city.  Even before the 67 riots and "white flight" the city was plummeting like a meteor.  Unemployment was rising, crime was rising, inefficiency in the polce department and police abuses were rising, the last time the city wasn't operating under a deficit was the year 1959, urban blight and bad infrastructure was ALREADY becoming a problem in the "core" of detroit (Downtown, Corktown, Cass Corridor/WSU, Grand River upto 94,  the industrial waterfront etc etc).  Not just whites left Detroit, most blacks of means have left as well.  The term that became popular in the late 40's of Detroit being, "the paradise of the middle class" had lost much of it's meaning by the time the 60's rolled around. 

Most people didn't leave Detroit because of "racial issues".  There had been a large black, and mostly poor, population in Detroit since the end of World War I. People left because of the problems I listed above.  The riots only accelerated issues that had been afflicting the city for quite some time.

I know the guy that was shot at that club last night. I have known him for 13 years. I believe there is more to the story than what the arm gaurd said because he had his 2 boys with him and they would have tried to stop him from doing any of that. From what the gaurd said it does not even sound like anything that my friend would do. He had 3 young children. When I found out about this I thought it was a lie. This really hurts you know.

Hello my neighbors, and everyone else.

I live in the buidling across the street. That last poster and I have similar views. I have a balcony and watched the post-shooting scene unfold. I was awake, heard the shots, jumped to the window and saw one of the bouncers coming around the back of the SUV. The driver's door was open and the driver had already fallen into the street. The SUV was slammed into the building... just as this video and photos show.

I don't know if the man posting on here claiming he's a bouncer from the scene is who he says he is, but his story sounds true. It jives with everything I've heard from people I personally know who on the block that night.

I don't know why the victim did what he did. But he sure did it. That spot where he ran his truck into the building is the exit door. Every Friday and Saturday night, from 1:40 to 2:00, hundreds of people file out those doors, in a steady stream. Kingdom is a huge club and it fills up every weekend. And there are typically 3 to 5 bouncers standing there maning the door. It's a big scene. People hang out on the side walk and block the traffic on Congress Street. Across Congress, is a large surface lot. People hang out in the late. There's lots of socializing and post-bar fooling around going on. It's arguably the busiest 2:00 am parking lot in the downtown district.

In the last few weeks, the police have decided to crack down on the bar patrons who block the traffic on Congress. For the past several weeks, there have been a minimum of two cop cars outside the club from 1:30 to 2:30, trying to disperse the crowd faster and keep people out of the street. When they first started this crack down, there were 8 cop cars on the scene. When people loiter in the street, the cops turn on their sirens and yell at the people over their loud speakers - "Get out of the street!" It's pretty annoying, actually. As a resident, it was easier dealing with the crowd noise than the police noise. But i understand why the cops are there.

So on Friday night, there were cops on the scene already. They were parked outside the club. I saw them out my window before the incident.

And this guy in the SUV, ran his truck up on the sidewalk and rammed the busiest exit door in the city - right in front of police officers. I have not witnessed a more callosed disregard for life than what the driver of that SUV did. He had no idea who he might kill. And the bouncers had every right to open fire on him.

Why are the bouncers carrying weapons? Because there are crazy mutherfuckers who will ram the exit door of the club at 1:50 am with a large SUV, that's why. The smart bouncers where bullet-proof vests as well.

I love my city. People love to jump on these message boards and type a 30-word reason why the city is the poorest large city in the nation... why it's population has declined... and why it's filled with abandonment. There is no quick and easy explanation. There are hundreds of factors that came together. And they're not just limited to Detroit. Detroit has seen the worst of many things, sadly.

As far as racism... it's everywhere. Not just Detroit. People migrated to Detroit for good-paying jobs and the population exploded. They brought all their racist ideas with them. And those ideas continue to be handed down to their children. Racism is rampant in the suburbs and the city. Everyone hates everyone in Michigan. That breaks my heart, but it's true.

And it breaks my heart that a guy got shot dead in my front yard last Friday night. I hope his surviving family can find some peace. And I hope the bouncers who's lives he almost took can find some peace too.
