OT - Shark Week Day 1 Open Thread

Submitted by a2_electricboogaloo on

It's that time of year again, Shark Week on the discovery channel.  Hopefully we get another week of awesome shark related programming.  Right now there's a show on a giant shark off the coast of South Africa.

Anyone else watching?

No cable until tomorrow. Shark week is the scariest tv of all time. I used to be a total beach goer, like total bum. After shark week I am leery to go into shallow ocean water.

I make the journey to the coast every year to celebrate shark week. No joke.. I just got of the Atlantic today. 3 years ago I caught a 16' blue shark on the Tuesday of shark week.

Apologies of course, wayyyy OT.  Two friends backed out of Tuesday's JT & Jay-Z concert @ Ford Field.  2 tickets, sect. 125 for $125 each.  Also would consider trading for tickets to UM football. Email is [email protected]

Enjoy Shark Week.

Edit: By the way this is off-topic

Dolphins are mammals.  Sharks are a a class of cartilaginous fish.  Aside from they both live in the ocean, they're not close at all.  Dolphins are more closely related to humans than they are to sharks.

I look forward to shark week each year and this premiere is no exception. The idea that something thought extinct could be lurking in the ocean today makes for good tv.

I must say I was extremely disappointed with the direction they went with the shark week Sunday premiere. When did this whole "mockumentary" movement start? I've lost almost all respect for the Discovery Channel. They seem to have no problem with turning into the National Enquirer Channel in order to improve their ratings. I encourage everyone to email their corporate office and complain about  this uptick in intentionally misleading programming.

There was a day when the purpose of shark week was to undo the damage that Jaws did, and educate people rather than entertain them. That day is long passed.

Honestly I don't mind the cryptozoology-type programming like this.  It's entertaining, though probably not scientifically faithful.  So long as 'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' stays on the learning channel (what?) then I'm fine with Discovery diversifying their programming a bit.

This pisses me off beyond belief. When i was a kid and I saw something on the Discovery Channel I assumed it was fact based and scientically sound. Now The Discovery Channel has turned into ScyFi. It is really frustrating when you have to try to figure out while watching something whether it is a real science based experiment or if it is a phony piece of garbage. The Discovery Channel is crap. Disappointing as hell.
