OT - Shannon out at Miami

Submitted by MGoAndy on

Miami's Rivals site is reporting Randy Shannon and staff will be fired tomorrow.  Generally these Rivals sites are pretty good about being on this kind of stuff.

I wasn't going to post this here but this gives me a bit more confidence, so take a rumor FWIW: Talked to a well-connected alum today who was extremely confident not only that Jim Harbaugh would be hired as the next coach of Michigan, but that Rich Rodriguez would be taking his talents to South Beach.  I'm still not overwhelmingly confident, but this is certainly an interesting development.  We'll see how this thing plays out I suppose.

I highly doubt that Miami hires a coach that has been under .500 in his previous stop at another big time program. The only thing RR would have going for him in that situation is that he already has established relationships in the state of Florida.

5-19 at Iowa St. doesn't look quite as bad as the same at Michigan. And Chizik had Auburn connections and report w/ the administration there. What relationship does RR have with Miami? Absolutely none except for recruiting the state of Florida.

It's a weird rumor yet it makes an odd amount of sense.  RR has a lot of recruiting ties to Florida, the ACC is weak and he has a lot of pride.  Resigning might be better than even the chance of being fired in his mind.  If RR bails now before DB has officially made up his mind, then he can claim he left entirely on his own terms and before his boss made a decision to his fate.

In the end though it sounds like talk people use to get readers/listeners.  Still stranger things have happened.

RR is very loyal to his assistants.  If the decision is more than GERG has to go, that presents a loyalty dilemma.   If he gets told any of his boys have to go, what will he do?  Would he resign rather than let some of his old school assistants get fired?

This would be so weird for me. I am cane fan, have been all my life, so seeing that move would be, umm, dejavuish? Though I have been reading on Manny Navarro's twitter feed (reports on Canes) that Miami is going hard after John Gruden FWIW.

...rumor that WCBN is reporting.

Bonus rumor: As a special thank you for reading this entire post, we'll reward you with a bit of slightly irresponsible rumor-mongering. WCBN has learned from an very confident alum we chatted with post game who promised us he had the inside scoop on the fate of Rodriguez and Michigan. This alum told us that by mid-week next week, Rich Rodriguez will be introduced as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes (which also implies that Randy Shannon's tenure at the U will come to an end) and that Jim Harbaugh would in fact be the next coach at Michigan. The guy we talked to could be completely wrong, but his confidence and specificity lead us to believe there could be some truth to the story. We thought we'd pass this along, but Bill is more convinced than I am that this guy actually had an inside track on the matter.
Edit: Oh wait, that's your blog post.  So tell us more, Andy.

Makes sense, I wrote the WCBN posting.

Again, Shannon getting canned wasn't exactly a huge surprise and this could still be coincidence, but what the hell, we're in meltdown mode and it was a hell of a rumor.

he's "astonishingly foolish"

(Take an irony pill as you read this, it is stated for humour's sake. It just amazes me how some of these pundits throw descriptors around about people like DB that way - show's you what they really think of the school, if nothing else has already.)

Let's assume this is true for one moment. Michigan gets its supposed man. RR saves face, as he switches jobs, but he may take some players from Florida with him, which could include our beloved Denard and my beloved Vincent Smith (Moxie to the eyeballs). My head hurts. I am going for a walk. Fuck, it's cold out here.

I could see us losing a recruit or two, but I doubt many players would follow him.  No one from WVU came here in 2008.  When this happens, players tend to feel like the coach abandoned them.

But anyway, this won't happen.  Miami can't afford it.

And people wonder why I don't want RR fired.

If all this came true and Harbaugh led the <domer>Return To Glory</domer> I'd be happy, of course, to see Michigan back on top, but it would stick in my craw to listen to the talk from the Rosenbergs of the world.  Right now I don't just want Michigan to succeed, I want Rich Rodriguez to succeed at Michigan.
