OT: Seth "Mayhem" Mitchell - Boxing Champion

Submitted by Kalamablue on

I figure it's a slow night and something to talk about, but former MSU linebacker turned boxing phenom, Seth Mitchell, has just won the IBS North American heavyweight belt.

Not sure if anyone is familiar with his story, but the guy had virtually no boxing experience until 5 years ago when his playing career was ended due to bad knees.  Since then, he's turned in an undefeated streak in his career and just won the IBS belt on HBO.  I don't know if anyone saw the fight, but he almost got knocked out in the 1st round, but hung in and was able to TKO Chazz Witherspoon in the 3rd round.  It was a great fight and I was really impressed how he was able to dig deep after getting jelly legs in the 1st round.

I honestly think that this guy is not that far away from potentially going up against one of the Klitschko brothers for a universal belt.  Although he's a Spartan, Mitchell seems to be a real good guy and I'm rooting for him.

I watched and came away some what impressed. He showed a lot of heart, but the very fact that Witherspoon had him in trouble shows that he has no shot at the Klitschko brothers. Witherspoon has a good record, but anyone that has seen him fight knows he's a bum.

He hits people who can hit back, and is in a boxing ring instead of somebody's frathouse or dorm room.  AFAIC, that means he's not a Spartan anymore, and thus worthy of support.

I turned to boxing in HS when my knees went bad lol... and had a lot of fun doing it.  Even got to represent M against some other universities.  I love stories of guys turned boxer is the point because these days most of the better athletes start in something else.  I would root for him because of that, but he's a spartan so I hope one of the Klitchko brothers smashes him.

He had a long way to go if he wants to actually be a serious contender for one of the Klitschko brothers. The man was practically knocked out in the first round
