OT: Scoreboards, Speakers and Signage

Submitted by BigTex on
There are a few items I have heard some rumblings on through my limited UofM contacts that I wanted to throw out for discussion. I'd certainly be interested in any of you have any insight or perspective (I'll even take humorous perspective) on the following: Scoreboards - Aside from one using a strategically-hidden dwarf that manually changes the score, clock, down, and yardage I think Michigan has one of the most basic and outdated scoreboards for a school of our size and stature. And while it's probably not a top priority in light of the obvious upgrades to The Big House, I'm a little surprised that some rich alum or foundation hasn't kicked in the dough to bring us from the stone ages here. Anyone know the story here or where this falls in regard to priority? Speakers - First off, I know there are very mixed feelings about piped-in music at the games (I won't touch that one). However, it seems that our speaker system is barely adequate for even the standard game announcing to be heard clearly...especially if we are really into the game. Does anyone know if that upgrade will be taking place as part of the stadium renovations? And perhaps it is just the nature of my seats, but it's really tough to get involved when the band is playing at the North end from the stands due to the delayed echo we hear at the South end. I've actually noticed the echo a lot more with the addition of the boxes on the East side of the field. Would a mic in front of the band (and the improved speaker system) help this or would the echo still occur? Signage - I know the actual "Michigan Stadium" lettering that was over the old press box is very sacred. It was my understanding that there were many people who were opposed to removing it altogether, so any ideas on what will be done with it? I've heard one suggestion of using the same font/style, making the letters larger, and putting them across the top of the new press box (seems rather obvious to me). To kill two birds with one stone, I am a fan of the previous suggestion plus auctioning off the old letters (together, of course) and putting the funds towards replacing the scoreboard. I know this isn't as exciting as another Spring Practice update, but I am needing to discuss Michigan Football as much as possible right now...even if it is just the stadium itself. I guess I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue... GO BLUE!
