OT: Schadenfreude - MSU is Combined 15-18 in FB and BB This School Year

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

The schadenfreude started with the loss to Middle Tennessee State, and it just keeps getting better and better. The past 10 months have been glorious.

With their loss to Purdue tonight, Sparty fell to 12-9 on the season. That means their football and basketball teams are a combined 15-18 this school year. (By comparison, we're 23-10.)

The best part of the game tonight was watching Izzo snap his whiteboard in half out of frustration. The more they lose in both sports, the more it helps us.

It wasn't even 1 year ago that Spartan fans were saying they had the best football-basketball combo in the country.  Pride cometh before the fall or something like that

I heard TWO completely different people at different times (who knew people close to their program) tell me that, "the msu defense will be better this year than it ever has been, especially the secondary"... I held my laughs in check but I was certainly puzzled that an actual rumor like that could even exist...and then they went 3-9. Maybe it's because the QBs were so bad they made the secondary look amazing?

At least when it came to football this past season, the fall came and no pride was to be found, but be damned if they didn't keep on insisting that they were but a young program, having only started in Division I just that moment and that things would improve.

That's the vibe I got from Spartan twitter anyway.

They aren't unbeatable at Breslin by any means. But I have the feeling that when we go there, they'll drain nearly every shot. Comparable to the UCLA game where they could basically shoot backwards between their legs and every shot would still go in.

I think we could win a close one at Crisler.

we scored 0 points in OT against Sparty, 2 against Wisconsin and 2 against Illinois.  Played 5 OT games that year and went 1-4, flip that to 4-1 and we probably make the NCAA but at worst are a #1 in the NIT.  Tough year with injuries, but we really weren't that far off, just struggled in crunch time.

I do think that is why we could surprise down the stretch, I feel like our offense could be lethal in crunch time, just need to keep developing Wilson and Wagner.

Is likely a short term thing. Izzo has shown he can outperform what's going on in football. On the other hand Dantonio hasn't really had to compete with Michigan (not to mention OSU and PSU) at their best at the same time. The football decline is a restoration of how things will be for a very long time

I wouldn't start selling their decline in basketball just yet, as I have witnessed this midseason malaise from them before only to watch them turn it around and go on a tear.

Also, I would not start selling this as a 1 year thing.  They have 4 freshman, but 1 is likely gone after this year and they lose 2 key senior contributors.  I know they have a good class coming in next year, but they still won't be able to compete with Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.

Those morons were even more annoying than MSU fans normally are while their football program was good and ours was a mess. I looooove seeing them suffer now. It's not over for Izzo - they'll be back - but I am thoroughly enjoying the fall of the Dantonio era. They're done and it's wonderful
