OT: San Francisco UM Fans - Alternative Bar Option
For all those MGoBloggers in the Bay Area, you may share my pain that UM lacks a fun, cool, well-located bar in the city. The Blarney Stone is in a pretty crappy location for those of us that live in the city and rely on public transport; and, the Blue Lite just kinda sucks in general and is shared with about a dozen other colleges.
To my point: I was recently in North Beach and and took in a few drinks at North Star. There was a sign posted that North Star is looking to be "the college bar" for some team. It got me thinking - could UM be that team?! I think yes!
North Star is an awesome spot - the second oldest bar in SF, a great local watering hole, cool bartenders, great locals, and very easy to access. North Beach is a cool, old-school neighborhood with tons of great restaurants, cafes, etc. Though it doesn't have a kitchen, North Star allows patrons to bring in food and they always have pretty kick ass drink specials.
Any who, I have no clue what the process is to have a bar "sponsor" a school...or how the school agrees to have the bar sponsor it. But, North Star really would be a cool bar for the SF UM Alum community to sync up with and gather at. For those of us in SF, what do you think???
Agreed on all points.

This needs to be posted in the sticky for UM friendly bars across the US. I don't think it should be posted here.
know when that sticky gets updated. most would have missed this suggestion. it should be posted here (and there)
I'll be in SF during the game against Western Michigan and was originally planing to be at the Blue Lite to catch the game. I'd rather watch it in a place in North Beach however, so get this thing started :-)
When I was single, that is where I would go, though Bayside seemed to have more M fans in it, I liked the feel of the bus stop better
I recommend the Royal Exchange in the financial district.
Definitely not the Blarney Stone out in the Richmond district - it's too far out.
This is, of course, if you want to be around a bit more of a business crowd as well. North Beach would suffice too but lots of tourists hang out there and get ignorant after dark. We get to play night games now but hopefully more than just 1 per year like DB is saying. he's playing daddy a little too much.
I live in Walnut Creek across the Bay now, and if I cannot find out about anything here, I may need to check North Star out during the season.
I've lived in Pleasant Hill for over three years now and still have yet to find a decent M bar or college football bar to call home that's close to me. I usually drive to Bobby G's in Berkeley or Taco Shop by Underdogs in Sunset for game day.
Do any of you ever eat Golden Boy pizza?
i love golden boys, that place is my favorite pizza in north beach. It's not as famous as some of the other places in north beach but damn good to say the least.
Is there a bar near Palo Alto where people gather to watch the games? I just moved here a week ago. I looked at the Google Map of bars and I see 3 in SF and 1 in Los Gatos, but all those are pretty far for a commute for the game. Any advice?
It's an amazing cross section of fans (because Stanford has a lukeworm following)
When I lived out there the Old Pro was Notre Dame heavy.
When I lived in the area (Mountain View), we went to Los Gatos all the time for games. UM club of Silicon Valley always had a big crowd there.
Thanks, I saw the Los Gatos location on the map, but it can be a bit far for early games and especially if you want to drink while watching the game.
But thanks, I guess that'll be an option. Hopefully I can find a place showing all the games in Palo Alto as well.
In downtown Los Gatos. It's right off of 17.
a DIVE, probably because it was my girlfriend ( now wife's ) watering hole. Boy would she laugh to know it's featured on MGB ! Of course we're in the 'burbs now ( Tri valley ) and I do not know any specific bar for UM fans. However our kindred spirits are in Berzerkly and I think if we aren't playing Cal I find the student bars there full of UM fans.
It looks like we've got at least a few people here that live in the East Bay, so maybe we can organize something at one of the local bars. Honestly, I'm not too worried about finding a great bar; it'd just be nice to be around fellow M grads and fans without having to travel to the city. I live in Pleasanton and have seen at least four or five cars with Michigan Alumni license plate holders here, so I know friendly faces are close by.
