Blimpy Burger is gone:
The frame by frame pictures of the building being squashed were surprisingly traumatic. RIP Blimpy, you will be missed.
I wasn't a huge fan, but it's sad when local institutions go down. Blimpy was a part of what makes Ann Arbor unique.
I lived right across the street on Madison for 2 years and took all visitors to Blimpy as a special treat. My dad used to joke that they "paint the meat on" and it was "cheaper than food". Sigh.
Was Blimpy's slogan.
And it wasn't true, unfortunately.
At that time it cost about the same as McDonalds.... needless to say we ate there a lot. 2 doubles with cheddar on pump with an egg, onions and mustard. Something fried on the side.
Are they not relocating? I thought that was the talk?
sentence in the article says the owner is finalizing a deal on a new location.
Sadly, I did process the work order which allowed the electric service to be disconnected, which was the final step towards, well, that. I believe the steel pole in front of it, which was actually my design, is going to be taken away as well if it is not gone already.
Hopefully, they start up again somewhere else - the rumor for a while was somewhere on William, I think, but obviously nothing came of it.
So it is safe to say that a great deal of this is your fault
to the guy who shot Bambi's mother.
Something like that. I still feel bad about the whole thing honestly. I actually held onto it for several days, if it means anything, but there is a concerted effort by the company to stay within the good graces of the University Of Michigan.
They go get their power from someone else?
They were a choice customer for a time. It took a lot of marketing savvy to get them back. When I was a designer in the field, I used to be at the planning meetings a lot and the parts of the university that we do service (the power plant still has some of it) add up to about a $7 million bill each year, as I recall.
Glad it is relocating.
Or otherwise, we would have seen 247's Crystal Ball projections for Da'Shawn Hand start trending more to Alabama and Florida.
but never really got the affection for it. Ok food, not that cheap
It's all over.
...that the University is turning into a cancer that's destroying Ann Arbor.
If only Blimpy was being displaced by a Dominos Pizza, then we could all blame Dave Brandon!
I remember when it closed for a fire. It will be back. Still never had better onion rings.
What's going in it's place?
I think the University bought the land. They haven't said what's going up to my knowledge though
The article said dorms
Whether there is any need for them is up for debate.
What good will the blimpy burger property do for that? I think there's four extra houses north of blimpy on division, including ones on either side of it. Are they going to bulldoze the west quad parking lot and use the blimpy burger lot as a driveway or something?
They actually had to threaten imminent domain to push the negotiations along. (And some of the other properties were owned by....Bill Martin). Blimpy's locale the widow just took a big sum of money we all probably would have and sold it. She had been giving Blimpy's a rent break for the area for awhile, so you can't really blame her.
It'll all be put and set up like this-
Now where am I supposed to get a double with bacon, salami a fried egg and no vegetables?
I wept a tear of pure grease.
