OT: Ryder Cup Selections

Submitted by MichiganStudent on

Corey Pavin just made his Ryder Cup announcements live on ESPN. Glad to see Tiger made the team.

Captains Picks: Woods, Zach Johnson, Cink, Fowler

The 8 automatic qualifiers: Mickelson, Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Mahan, Stricker, Kuchar, Overton, Watson.

Tiger is a no brainer, especially because he's playing better lately.

Cink has won a major over there.

Johnson just shot a 63 the other day and is a great putter.

and Fowler could be that exciting Xfactor.

I'm not an avid Ryder Cup follower, but didn't Tiger have a rather uninspiring Ryder Cup record even when he was at the top of the golf world?

Or am I confusing him with someone else?

Tiger did have uninspiring Ryder and Presidents records early in his career when they couldn't find a partner for him. Now he usually plays with Stricker or Furyk which has worked pretty well. He also is probably the best singles match play competitor in the history of the game.

Fowler on the other hand played great in both Walker cup events which is the ryder cup of amateur golf.

But for most other PGA golfers it would be a very good season.  He has been inconsistent, again, by his standards, but has two top 4 finishes in majors and hasn't finished outside of the top 30.  His Ryder cup record isn't great, and he has had far from his best season, but for him not to be there would be stupid.  His bad season is still a very good season for most other PGA golfers, including the ones he was up against for the captain's picks.

The first three are pretty much chalk, everyone expected them.  That last pick could have been any one of about 10 guys.  Fowler makes sense, he's been good this year and looks like he could be making these teams on his own in the future, not a bad idea to get him on the team now for some experience.

This might be the easiest captain job ever though.  The experts all expect the US to lose.  If they lose, it's not Pavin's fault because the Euros just had way more talent to pick from, and if they win...

...well, they'll probably say Monty found a way to make the Euros choke just like he always did.  But Pavin will get a lot of credit too.

When was the last time he contended? the Brittish Open last year is the last time he played well.  Brandt Snedeker has had top 5's the last 3 weeks and he's #1 on tour in putting which is huge in Match play.  I probably would have picked 10 guys before I picked Cink.

I don't particularly care for Cink either but he won the British Open and they are playing in the UK.  He is the 15th American player in the world rankings which I suppose is marginal, but the British Open counts in the thinking.

Also per the AP story:

"Only two of the eight American players who made the team have experience playing the Ryder Cup overseas. Cink has played in England and Ireland, while Johnson's only Ryder Cup was in Ireland."

I love watching the Ryder Cup but only follow pro golf intermittently -- whatever happened to Anthony Kim? I remember he was HUGE for the U.S. in 2008; he destroyed Sergio Garcia 5&4 in the first match of Sunday singles. Is he injured? Not playing well?
