OT: Ryan Leaf arrested in hometown on burglary, drug possession charges

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Unbelievable and sad story.

For those who aren't familiar, he is considered the biggest draft bust in NFL history. He also was the star QB of the washington state team that Michigan and Charles Woodson beat in the 1998 game, 21-16, to win the National Championship.

He was on the Dan Patrick Show, oh, within the last year and a half I want to say.  I wasn't watching but listening on the radio and he was saying how things are back on track in his life and that there was many positive things occuring for him.  It seemed legitimate but many and most I'm sure weren't optimistic.  DP after the interview was realistic, being hopeful that he was truthful and wishing him well, but knew to take it with a grain of salt and to "wait and see".  Changes don't happen overnight, they take years; this shows how hard it can be to turn one's life around after drastic downfalls.

I live in Spokane so am very aware of the Leaf drama/fallout/train wreck that is his life.  He truly threw a beautiful ball, too bad he has cream of wheat for brains and judgement that would leave my seven year old saying 'Wah?!'  I thought he was getting into the coaching world, but it looks like that will be another failed opportunity in his life.  Adios Ryan, we'll always have Woodson's epic pick in the endzone.

This is a guy who got a check for $11.25 million dollars (a bigger bonus than Manning got) when he was 21 years old and married a Chargers cheerleader a few years later.  The guy could have thrown a million interceptions in a row and still had an awesome life, but instead is breaking into houses to rifle through people's medicine cabinets.

It's a sad story, but I have a tough time feeling sorry for the guy.

Apparently this isnt being deleted right now so ill get it out while i can. My roomates friend was over last night ( He's a fresh at MSU) and told us, earlier this week, he witnessed Trice, Payne, and Dawson, being arrested for BURGLARY! Apparently, they were in Hubbard, (one of the dorms on campus) and were knocking on the doors on one of the floors in the dorms, if no one was home, and the door was unlocked they walked in and took what they pleased. He did not witness the them do this, just them talking with the police. Trice was actually arrested, and in the back of the cop car, before they were all RELEASED (!!!!!!) after Payne and Dawson had a brief talk with the police. I know nothing can really be done about this now... I just found this to be very irritating, yet typical for Sparty.

AP had this to say on twitter an hr after it happened.

"I'm good nothin happen we are good.."

That amount of stuff that MSU basketball gets away with is incredible to me. It's like everyone is so nervous about upsetting or damaging Izzo that he and his players can do whatever they want. Izzo reminds me of Tressel, pre-tattoogate. He speaks well and seems friendly, so everyone gives him a free pass, but I find the guy suspicious as hell.

A couple of wires crossed?

I think a couple of wires crossed leads you to doing stupid once and maybe even twice.  But as stated before when you are handed a check for 11.25MM and have a Chargers cheerleader to help you spend it your decison-making process looks more like this:

Why does it seem like every time Ryan Leaf gives an interview about how he's gotten his life back on track, within a few months something like this comes out?

"How are you doing now Ryan?"

"Well, after my NFL career ended I realized I had a lot of growing up to do. So I've worked on it, and thanks to all of the support of my friends and family, gotten my life back on track. I'm now coaching the quarterbacks at a school in Texas."

*BREAKING NEWS* Ryan Leaf arrested for illegally obtaining controlled substances and trying to scores pills off of football players.

"How are you Ryan?"

"Well, you know, I've kind of gotten out of football, and have been doing my own thing. I just recently wrote a book about all of my struggles and about how I'm getting back on the right path. I've worked really hard, and thanks to my friends and family, gotten my life back on track."

*BREAKING NEWS* Ryan Leaf arrested on burglary, theft, and drug charges.

....after his arrest per the NYT "Fifth Down"  blog:

http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/31/ryan-leaf

To quote:

"I am confident that there will be further understanding when the facts are revealed, and feel very blessed for all of the support, especially from my friends and family."

I would hope for his own sake that this is true, as I wonder if this incident endangers the plea deal and probation from the incident at West Texas A&M. The sad thing about it, in my opinion, is that the trouble will be just that much more immediate and severe each time. Hopefully, he really does find some stability soon.

It is difficult for me to feel truly terrible about his squandering an NFL career (despite injuries, his work ethic was terrible by most accounts and his relationship with his peers and the media was famously bad, as I recall), but at the same time, it is difficult to see his (or dare I say, anyone's) post-NFL career unfold like this.

While the MGoCommunity is perhaps an exception to this for obvious reasons, I think his NFL flameout and the stuff he's done since then tend to make people forget just how good he was in college. At the time, I thought he had more natural talent than Manning, but needless to say there's a lot more than physical ability that goes into playing QB, especially in the NFL. (And, in particular, there may never have been a QB better prepared to be a pro than Peyton.) I agree that his problems are largely of his own making (though a lot of 22 year olds would've cracked under that kind of pressure), but still too bad he was never able to turn it around.

Oh, and Section 1, thanks for posting that picture. I was sitting in that end zone that day, so I had a rather spectacular view of it when it happened. I could swear that Woodson was about 20 feet off the ground...

a notorious A-hole, going back to college, even high school.

Addiction is a serious problem and can make people do things they wouldn't otherwise do, but...some people are just bad human beings: selfish, inconsiderate, mean-spirited, etc.

Leaf was a bad guy before he had money.  Let's not make excuses for him.

Poor Ryan Leaf..... just can't catch a break.

"While riding in the backseat of the police cruiser, Leaf apparently was able to get the window down and then tossed out a handful of jewelry that he must of been hiding inside his jacket after being apprehended by the police.

Just as luck would have it, a motorist in a vehicle passing in the opposite direction, reached out and picked the jewelry out of the air, turned his vehicle around and caught up to the police car as they pulled into the Great Falls Police Department facility, turning the jewelry over to the officers.

A spokesman for the Great Falls Police Dept. made the following statement, " We want to thank Mr. Woodson for retrieving this evidence for us. We had no idea that he was on a fishing trip here in Montana and hope that he enjoys his stay. We also wish him the best of luck in the upcoming NFL season with the Packers."

The guy had a chance at a great life and has ruined it. Hopefully he can get the help he needs and live the rest of his life in a productive manner. Prison for a couple of years might be the only solution.
