OT: Rumors of Mass Transfers from USC

Submitted by HimJarbaugh on

This is coming from r/cfb whose sources are a couple posts from a USC board, but it sounds like the transfer talk is legit.

Allegedely OL EJ Price punched head coach Clay Helton and is transferring to Georgia. The post also mentions a number of other players that plan to transfer:

  • Freshman Safety Jamel Cook
  • Junior OT Chuma Edoga
  • Junior QB Max Browne

The post also mentions Adoree Jackson and Juju Smith however I am not sure if those would be transfers as they are probably NFL-ready.

Apparently Helton will address the situation today but if there are lots of transfers, this can't be a good look to recruits.

It shouldn't have happened, but I can't sit here and act like it was the worst thing ever. He was getting pulled by the ref and basically did a "GET THE FUCK OFF ME, MAN!"

Should've gotten tossed, you just can't do it. But let's not act like he went Chris Childs on Kobe.

is part of the reason I think that Bama may be a touch overrated at this point during the season, not necessarily in terms of where they are ranked but in terms of presumed invincibility.  I think USC was a flaming mess when they played Bama.

Agreed, but I don't know who or when someone is actually going to test Alabama.  Ole Mis certainly isn't good and didn't answer any questions for me either, but after that....um...at Arkansas on 10/8 maybe?  Maybe Texas A&M at home on 10/22?

That's it.  That's all of the tough competition left on their schedule.  Tennessee is trash, LSU is trash, and the rest is cupcakes.  Don't see anyone in the SEC East testing them in the SEC Champ game either (unless Florida turns into a good team).

Likely won't know anything about Alabama until the playoff.

While none of these teams are elite, they have a tough stretch @Ark, @Tenn, TA&M, @LSU. But even if they lose one of those, a one-loss SEC champ would make the playoff, period.  So it'd come down to UF, UGA or a rematch with Tenn in the SEC title game anyway.  The good thing is, the B1G ten performed well enough in non-conf that a one-loss B1G champ is going to the playoff too.  So it's not like a B1G ten team would have to make the case over a one-loss SEC champ.  They'll both be there. Big 12 almost certainly won't.

Is that Frank Clark I see waving in the background?

I don't say that as a shot at Hoke, I think all college coaches are going to end up with their share of problems, but rather that you're basing a lot of that comparison on rumors and innuendo at USC, while making it seem like Hoke never had a problem with any of his players.

I don't think it's right to look at these specific set of problems apparently happening at USC and saying "they have their own Hoke," but on the other hand, if one was trying to say simply that a season in progress is unravelling at a frightening pace at USC, the comparisson isn't terrible.

That's all fine and true and Hoke mustly upheld the expectation we all have for Michigan football players off the field.  My point was just that the comment made that it looks like USC already has their own Hoke could easily have been simply a statement about how they look to be unravelling and not playing good football, something that is very similar to Hoke's last year.  Others jumped on that comment and made it seem like Hoke only ever coached angels and had no problems on his teams, so the situations can't possibly be the same.  This is not only a bit hyperbolic but also reads into the original comment an intent that may have not been there.

Most reasonable fans won't destroy him either. They just don't think he's fit to be a head coach at a big time school like Michigan.

It's not like Rich Rod where some people despised him from day 1 and still don't like him (for whatever the reason).

Hoke seemed like a guy most folks would like to have around...just not in any imporant capacity, lol. Maybe as a storyteller or something. He can be team curator.

I joke, but in all...he was likeable for most. Did not need to be head coach any longer and that entire staff needed an overhaul outside of Mattison who was the only coach who'd really proven anything in the past 5-10 years.

We all see where the program as a whole was and where it is now. Makes you scratch your head a little bit, but whatever, onward.

Hoke was a fine football head coach. The record he had while in tenure had far more to do with his offensive staff. Funk and Borges were the downfall. I really think them two were pricks and hated life. Nussmeir didn't have the guns or time to come into that situation and right the ship. Hell, look at what this staff is still trying to correct with their former players and this is staff is top notch.

Pete Carroll and he wasn't their first or second choice. Everyone else has been a reach. They have a terrible track record and there's no mystery why. They keep hiring unqualified former players as their AD.

They're a CFB blue blood in a tremendous recruiting area. Recruiting has not been their problem in recent years even with the turmoil. They should be one of the top destinations for coaches, but I think it's unlikely that Lynn Swann can or will hire one at their level.

Haden, who is(was) a God around LA was quickly losing his status and was literally becoming sick over his failure to rejuvenate USC football, which is the only thing that matters there. They moved him out because they didn't trust him to hire another coach. Helton was from the beginning a placeholder. He has done nothing to change that perception

They had the chance to hire Ed Orgeron who is basicaly the Southern raised version of Hoke. They actually probably should have hired him, but alas they passed. Knowing USC they will probably try to hire some fringe candidate who was once on Pete Carroll's staff back in the day.

That's not even close to being true. From a personal character standpoint, Hoke is everything you'd want in a head coach.

Orgeron might be one of the best DL coaches in college football history but he's also a lunatic who rips off his shirt and challenges his own players to a fight just to prove who's a bigger badass. He's got other shit in his past that's unsavory too.

is going to be at the top of the ADs list of coaches to look at.  He'd have a ton of access to talent and his offenses would attract a ton of the California talent to come play for him.

I'm sure some SEC teams will make a run at him as well, but USC is as good a landing spot for him as any.
