OT: Rumor: Mack Brown to Retire on Saturday
Via Jake Lebhan, reporter from Topeka, KS (580 WIBW):
@JakeLebahn: According to a source Texas Longhorn head coach Mack Brown will retire this Saturday after the game against Baylor.
Crazy offseason for coaches if true. Also, Mike Sherman at A&M may be on on his way out at College Station.

Ohh, Magnus, always focusing on what's important

Is she taller than him?

While Brown won a national title and that is nothing to sneeze at, his record in the Big 12 wasn't that great. Texas only played in 3 Big 12 title games and won 2 under Brown. Oklahoma played in 8 Big 12 title games and won 7.

Not many high-level coaches on the board for Texas to choose from.
Maybe poach Gus Malzahan?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
Texas is a job that a lot of coaches would leave their current school for. So you can't just look at "available" coaches for that job.

Gary. PATTERSON.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
He played at Purdue and coached at Minnesota

...when they could have hired Kevin Sumlin to be a HCIW when Hope was. Not enough stache?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
I don't see how John Gruden could NOT turn this down...
December 1st, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
Absolutely. Tony Dungy as his DC, Herbstreit as QB coach and Punky Brewster as ball girl.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
why can't we have punky as our ball girl?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
She has Texas roots.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
Urban Meyer.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
I can't see no way that he doesn't not turn it down neither.

I row, knight?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
The timing of this seems odd. Although with the direction that the Big XII is headed I can see how he may want to go now.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
Mack Brown wants to be an athletics director. The Texas AD, DeLoss Dodds is like 80 years old. He could easily take a job as an Associate AD there at UT and move into the AD role ala Mike Bellotti and Barry Alvarez.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
I'm just glad we don't have to worry about this kind of stuff anymore. We have a bright future ahead. Go Blue!
December 1st, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
Would anyone actually be surprised to see Nick Saban at least "talk" to Texas? Hell no.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
I wouldn't want to be $aban's mother if enough money were involved.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
The only people happier than the rest of the Big 12 that Mac Brown is retiring, is tsio fans. Because they hired Urban Meyer before Texas could come calling.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
Wonder if Muschamp will come calling? It is the job he's wanted all along, after all.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
I would love to see him Kiffin the shit out of Florida. That would be amazing.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
Picture It:
Urban Meyer retires, takes Ohio job after one season off.
Muschamp comes in, leaves after one season.
Gator fans would hate everything.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
That leaves one man for Florida:

[Can't unsee.....]

If he can hire a competent defensive coordinator, Weis really wouldn't be that bad. Plus he's a good recruiter, and he helps keep Urban out of Florida.

December 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
I wouldn't be surprised if he did. I don't see why he would want to leave bama unless there's something going down and he wants to bolt before shit hits the fan. Although, it seems like coaches in the SEC can do whatever they want and get away with it so he'll probably stay put.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Urban Meyer has got to be kicking himself right now. There are no impending sanctions at Texas, he would get first pick from a bigger and better talent pool, and the women are about 9000 times more attractive.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
But at Texas he might not be able to fire the school president like he can at Ohio
December 1st, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
This.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
Muschamp was going to be Brown's successor but decided to bolt for Florida. I'm guessing part of the reason he left Texas was because he was figuring Brown was going to coach a few more years.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:29 PM ^
His stock had taken a hit after last year's debacle. It wasn't really the defense's fault that they had a losing season, but a sinking tide lowers all boats.
There were grumblings that his "head-coach-in-waiting" status was in danger regardless of Mack's future, so he probably felt it was prudent to take a solid HC gig while his stock was still high.
December 1st, 2011 at 6:08 PM ^
was a finess team that wanted to play smashmouth football...tx is going thru a idenity criss. This year they lack a rb who can toke the rock 20-25 times a game. Talent galore but Mack changed up with his assisant...again,tx is going thru a idenity criss.
Mack should retire, what has he done since VY brought home the hardware?
December 2nd, 2011 at 1:17 AM ^
They do have Malcolm Brown who was a five star running back coming out of high school. He's just been dinged up this year because of turf toe. He's a good back.
December 2nd, 2011 at 3:01 AM ^
Without Ricky Williams or Cedric Benson around, there's not a lot of RB's that can toke the ball like they did.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
Texas
tsio

Take that back!
There was a hot OSU cheerleader. That one time.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
So... Couldn't Meyer just leave tOSUx if he wanted to?

I mean... It would be a douche bag move relative to humans, but totally par for Urban's course.

/ wishful thinking
December 1st, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
Also, Austin >>>>>>>>>> Columbus. And that's not even nearly enough greater than signs.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
It is going to be Gary Patterson all the way. Great defensive mind and knows the culture of football in Texas.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
Urb blew it. Texas is a way better job than OSU, especially with Gee and Smith still there.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
If this was a forced retirement and they are letting him go out like this because of his legacy. It was realistic to think that after 5-7 last year if they did not bounce back and land in a BCS bowl he was out the door. How can you go seven years at Texas with only one running back breaking 1000 yards?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:34 PM ^
... When you've got the top class year in and year out.
December 1st, 2011 at 4:55 PM ^
Malcolm Brown and Jonathan Gray are gonna to break that trend in the future.

http://mgoblog.com/diaries/canning-coordinator-revisited
Whenever I hear an offensive coordinator is fired, my first reaction will that it's a short term desperation move. My crazy prediction: Mack Brown's removal of Greg Davis is an indicator that Mack's in his last few years of being a head coach.
Always be suspicious when the offensive coordinator is fired!
December 1st, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
Tubs got canned a year or so after firing Borges didn't he?
December 1st, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
Carr retired, not fired, but in many cases an unforced change in offensive coordinator tends to precede (by a year or three) a change in head coach.
December 1st, 2011 at 5:08 PM ^
Yes, but I think that had more to do with what happened immediately afterward. He brought in a spread based OC (Franklin? maybe?) but kept all his other offensive assistants. The assistants never really bought in, rebelled after a slow start and Tubs fired the new OC only a few games into the season. The writing was on the wall from that point forward.
