OT: Rules For Hanging A Banner

Submitted by raleighwood on

Are there any rules (formal or otherwise) regarding hanging a banner?  For example, if Michigan loses today (very hypothetically), would it be acceptable to hang a "2014 - Elite Eight" banner in Crisler?  I think in general, you need to actually win something (Regular Season, B1G Tournament, NIT, NCAA Regional, National Title) to hang a banner.

It just seems to me that an Elite Eight is something that should be commemorated.  I don't know if Michigan has much of a history with this.  The 1977 team lost in the regional finals (don't know if it was called "Elite Eight" back then) and I don't think there's a banner for that so the precedence may already be set.  I was just curious to see what the board thinks.

This comes up because I used to live near NC State and they hang a banner for EVERYTHING.  In fact, they'll probably hang a "2014 NCAA 2nd Round" banner because they won the play-in game this year.

A banner is unacceptable unless we win today. You can hang FF banners. You can hang a national champion banner. You can also hang conference champion banners. You cannot hang any other banner

Elite Eight banner mock-up. Model the W Gymnastics banners in Crisler are.

Sweet Sixteen one because I am stupid

I would take final four appearances over conference championships every year. That is what is relevant nationally. Going back a few years (without Google) I feel like you would be way more likely to remember final four participants than the conference champions of even just the "power" conferences.

The Final Four is a big deal.  You win a Regional, you get to cut down nets, and you get a sweet trophy from the NCAA for it.  It deserves a banner.  Even Duke who has like 15 of them puts up banners for it.

No other sport celebrates 3rd and 4th place like college basketball. Ive never viewed the final four as an achievement in and of itself. Its a stepping stone to the ultimate goal, yes some schools act like its the goal itself and anything more is just gravy.

Anything past the Sweet 16 is pretty much gravy. You have to be both good and lucky to win. Saying no other sport celebrates 3rd and 4th place like college bball does is irrelevant given that the college bball tournament is unlike any other sport.

Ive never viewed the final four as an achievement in and of itself.

Are you kidding? Gene Keady, one of the most accomplished B1G coaches, never reached the Final Four. Bo Ryan just made it for the first time in his career at Wisconsin. Jim Boeheim's only made it 3-4 times in his 40-year career. It's a huge deal to get there and absolutely worthy of a banner.

And no, it's not true that basketball is the only sport that celebrates Final Fours. Almost every sport does this.  Hockey does the exact same thing. Baseball celebrates College World Series appearances. Football teams celebrate BCS bowls, and so on.

It has become common and you have to do it if others are doing it. It's kind of like RAWK muzak at football games... Even venerable Michigan does it, but it doesn't make it right. I can't wait for the race to the bottom when there are banners for making the sweet sixteen.

Sweet Sixteen banner - no
Elite Eight - debatable, but I would hang it
Final four appearance or better - absolutely hang it

Regular season champs - obviously
BTT champs - obviously
BTT runner up - no

Big Ten regular season champs - yes

Big Ten tournament champs - yes

Final Four appearance - yes

National Champion - yes

National Runner-Up - not individual (summary banner with all the years on it)

Elite Eight - not individual (summary banner with all the years on it)

and that's about it. No Sweet Sixteen or Tournament appearance banners. No conference runner up banner for either regular season or BTT.

Only if you win the championship. F 8th place! I don't care what others do. We are better than that and need to earn it. Yes I read the football BS. I don't see a banner hanging for the Sugar Bowl win against that shitty VTech team.

JK, no I understand how hard it is. I understand winning a gold medal is tough, winning a national championship is tough, and just as tough as this. If you want to hang your bronze medal do it. I am not elitist, and don't think we are holier than thou. I say oversign kids, cut kids, and do everything legal to win. I am just against celebrating 8th place. I don't care how tough it was. I say rush the court and raise hell. #GoBlue

Very few of us are. This has been about the Final Four the majority of the time. With the depths this program sunk to for 2 decades. Putting up consecutive Final Four banners should make us shit out pants with joy.

...the young nitwits who think you should build statutes for finishing fourth because it is hard to do. And the basketball recruits of that generation.

Nothing "elitist" about it, unless you don't know what that word means. It's just about having standards.

Just go ahead and die since you're so damn old and nothing in life is worth recognizing besides winning it all. No one ever said a statue should be built. But putting up a banner for the final four is perfectly fine. Get over yourself old man.

So, it's about having standards? Do you think Duke has standards in basketball? Guess what? They also hang banners for Final Four appearances:

It's standard practice across D-1 basketball to honor Final Four appearances.

And this has nothing to do with the current generation or any other one. This practice has been going on for decades.

Nothing lower than a Final Four in the tournament gets a banner.  We can avoid this potential issue by winning the game today.

No banners for anything other than winning the conference, winning the conference tournament, getting to the Final Four, or winning a national title.

We're not the frickin Detroit Lions who hang banners any time they make the playoffs.

We're already getting to hang one banner after this year. Let's hope after today we can make it two.
