OT: Rooting for Sparty this week?

Submitted by profitgoblue on

Question:  Are people in MGoBlogville rooting for Sparty this weekend?

My two-cents worth:  Normally, I would probably cheer on Sparty against Wisconsin (Wisconsin fans are obnoxious) but I submit that a MSU loss tomorrow hurts Sparty to the point that they come into the Michigan game a bit deflated and flat.  I'm not one to hope for Michigan's competition to come in at less than 100% but, well, I guess that's what I'm rooting for here.  Not that I don't think Michigan can win next weekend - I'd just rather see Michigan come in with a leg up on the competition.

If I had to pick a #2 B10 team to root for, it would be Wisconsin. However, next weekend in Ann Arbor will be a lot of fun if both teams come in undefeated.

I'm pretty indifferent in this game.

"I hope they stop making Jello Chocolate Pudding Packs this week."

*shudders at the very thought*

**even if I haven't had one in probably three years**

I hope they lose and lose big.  I want them to be beaten and bruised both physically and emotionally.  I want to walk in to work and not hear a single peep about Saturday because of the embarrassment laid at their fans' collective feet.

So, to answer your question specifically, no.  I will not be rooting for Sparty on Saturday.

Absolutely not. Sparty will never be rooted for. Unless its a non BCS bowl game versus a SEC team or USC and in which Sparty is 6-6 or 7-5 entering the game.

but -

the guy's a dead beat with an arrest record and when he comes over he drinks all of my beer and ruins my couches.

So my support is limited to a yearly Christmas card. (I usually mail this to Ford Field c/o Little Ceasers Pizza Bowl)

I normally root for the B10 team.  When Iowa was playing Arizona, I was rooting for Iowa.  But I'll never root for MSU or OSU.  During the MSU - ND game, I was rooting for ND.  Screw MSU and OSU.

FWIW I think Wisconsin is going to beat Sparty this weekend.

in years past i probably would have ahd sympathy and figured that by them beating wisky the chances of wisky and sparty both ending up with worse records than us was increased (due to typical sparty downward season spiral), but they have grown so obbnoxious that i now hope they lose every game.

yakkity sax on both sides in a game that leaves them both defeated and flat, questioning their abilities and unsure of the future.

Ideal scenario for me would be an MSU 'win' with a score of 14-12 (yes, MSU safety in there) where they only win b/c Wisconsin whiffs an easy field goal to end the game.

In short, i want them to play like sh*t and escape with a win and come into the M game all kinds of paranoid about which MSU team is going to show up before giving us all a lot of 'NOOOO, SPARTY!!!'

Rooting for MSU?  Over Wisconsin?  Ummm...Yeah.  I'm also rooting to get in a car accident and, when I finally heal up and return from the hospital, I sure hope a strange woman shows up on my doorstep with a ten-year kid that looks just like me.

the high school teen movie. Here we invite the unattractive dorky chick to the homecoming. Tell her she was a write in candidate for homecoming queen, get her hopes up, then TOTALLY embarrass her and point and laugh. Next week Sparty talks themselves into being relevant and ascending to the heights of non-mediocrity and then we get to send them crashing down to earth....all that being said most important for us is taking care of Indiana

like there is any other answer than F No! I would be perfectly happy to see Sparty lose every game every year from now till the end of time.  Why would I ever want them to win?

There's another football team in the state of Michigan?

I root for Sparty in out of conference games. Other than that I really don't care whether they win or lose. As long as Michigan wins, it's fine with me.

Actually, yes, I am rooting for Sparty, although I won't be too broke up if they lose.  But I'd like them to win.  Next week's slate of games + undefeated Michigan + undefeated Sparty + rivalry game = maybe College Gameday in Ann Arbor, for one thing.  Even if not it'll make for a big, big stage.  And then the beatdown Sparty hopefully receives will be even sweeter, like pouring chocolate milk and powdered Quik on Cocoa Puffs.

Unlike Sparty, who not only roots for us to lose, but to suffer serious injuries, I just don't want them to win.  As a matter of fact, the more heart breaking the loss, the wider I smile.

I've never heard that before.  Is that a relatively new thing?  I graduated in '95 and we always got along better with Wisc than any other school.  Great campus, strong academics, solid sports.  I'd root for them against anyone but us.

Without doubt I'm hoping they teach MSU that beating ND, at home, on a trick play (plus wins over Boca Raton High and Montana Central Tech) does not make one a giant of the football universe.

Have you ever been to a game at Camp Randall?  The fans are crazy (maybe obnoxious is not the best word to use).  Not as ridiculous as OSU fans, but definitely moreso than MSU fans because I view the MSU fans as little brothers that like to puff out their chests and talk tough when everyone knows they cannot back up their words.  Wisconsin, on the other hand, have a history of beating Michigan at Camp Randall and breaking their bleachers in the process:

On October 30, 1993, the Wisconsin Badgers football team upset the Michigan Wolverines 13–10. As the final gun sounded, students began to charge the field to celebrate, but were blocked by the guardrails surrounding the field. The crowd in the back, not fully aware of what was going on at the front, continued to move forward, now being aided by gravity. As a result, those up front got caught and were pressed against the rails, and then were trampled as the throng spilled onto the field. 73 students were injured, six of them critically.

I haven't been to a game there and certainly would not have been thrilled to be crushed.  But, I don't think it gives any reason to be bothered by Wisc.  Hell, didn't Michigan fans rush the court after a bball win against someone not so great this year?  Crowds sometimes do really stupid things.  We all get excited from time to time (and everybody kills and murders).

I stick to the notion that it's a great campus, solid academic school and generally filled with nice people.  I am eager to see them pound Sparty relentlessly.

I've been in the Wisc. student section wearing a Michigan shirt and cheering obnoxiously. There would be the occasional drunk student who would scream "What the fuck?!?!?!?!" but otherwise, it seemed that Wisconsin students had a fair amount of respect for Michigan.

Later that night, I did see some Michigan fans beat the shit out of a couple of drunk Wisconsin fans in the middle of a major street though.

You all profess to hate Sparty, yet you would decline a chance to beat a 5-0 and highly-ranked MSU team with delusions of grandeur, instead favoring a win over a 4-1 team that has just dropped several spots in the polls.

By that logic, you're all still disappointed that the undefeated John Cooper teams that we beat under Lloyd weren't 4-6 coming into our games with them. That certainly would have made our victories more noteworthy.

I have to say that this is also a factor in rooting for Sparty, they have a history of epic collapses, which are always more fun when they start from extreme heights.

Apathy - MSU wants us to want them to lose - they want to be on equal footing with OSU in the hate department. I think we should just ignore them and treat them winning/losing with absolutely nothing.  They win - don't care, they lose - don't care.  It will piss them off so much more if we treat them like Minnesota as opposed to tOSU :)

Is when their players make the news or when they are playing against Michigan.  Too early for me to have a rooting interest one way or the other where they are concerned.
