OT: Rooting for OSU this weekend?

Submitted by formerlyanonymous on

Question:  Are people in MGoBlogville rooting for Ohio State this weekend?

My two-cents worth:  Normally, I would probably cheer on the Buckeyes against Illinois (Illini fans are obnoxious) but I submit that a OSU loss tomorrow hurts OSU to the point that they come into the Michigan game a bit deflated and flat.  I'm not one to hope for Michigan's competition to come in at less than 100% but, well, I guess that's what I'm rooting for here.  Not that I don't think Michigan can win our big rivalry weekend - I'd just rather see Michigan come in with a leg up on the competition.

By the way,

If it stays 42 and sunny I'll be happy!

It's not directly related to your specific thread, but the comment that someone hates MSU more than OSU. Yours just provided excellent spoof material. We get SO MANY MSU threads but hardly anything OSU half the time. I fear we lose our focus of hate sometimes.

+10 to you to make up for anyone who downvoted that comment.

I'll get right to that, as soon as I finish worshipping the devil over here while watching a good date movie on a Sunday afternoon in the fall, while eating a veggie burger over angus beef and listening  to Justin Bieber over, well, anything while driving a pretty yellow minivan instead of a mean ol' truck...

Yeah, I'll get right on that.

My rules for rooting for/against Michigan rivals:

1.  Always root FOR the Big Ten against other conferences, no matter who is playing.  Strength of conference can only benefit Michigan.

2.  Always root FOR MSU when they play against the weaker half of the conference.  Beating a solid, respected MSU team only benefits Michigan.  Losing to a solid MSU team is damage control.  Losing to a weak MSU team is just miserable.

2a.  Seeing Sparty lose is still enjoyable regardless of the above, which makes watching every MSU game a win-win situation.

3.  Always root FOR Ohio State, be it a non-conference or any Big Ten opponent.  Playing the strongest, most respected Ohio State team possible at the end of the season can only benefit Michigan and the intensity of the rivalry.  Beating a weak Ohio State team is still fun, but beating a strong Ohio State team makes my year.

4.  In general, root AGAINST Notre Dame.  Nothing good ever comes of the Irish winning.  Even if they are playing Ohio State or MSU, the continued decay of the Notre Dame football myth is always enjoyable.  No good can come of Notre Dame beating a Big Ten opponent.

4a.

i.  If USC is in national championship contention, root FOR Notre Dame.  Making the Pac-10 look weak is in our benefit, and...hating on USC is fun.  Plus, giving the Domers a little something positive is important for perpetuating the continued cycle of crushing their hope of returning to former glory.

ii.  If USC is not in national championship contention, root AGAINST the Domers.  It's the last game of their season, watching them walk dejectedly into their locker room at the end of the season is awesome.

USC is not always the last game of the season for ND.  When USC comes to South Bend it is in October.  Actually looking back over the schedule the general rule seems to be that the last game is always in California: either @ USC (even years) or @ Stanford (odd years).

Weirdos.

I don't "root" for anybody.  Not even Michigan, really, because I am Michigan (or at least part of Michigan) and I've got better things to do than root for myself.

why does OSU need to be rooted for ever by us? They don't need any help or positive vibes to beat Illinois.  When they play us they're going to be undefeated or with 1 loss in all likelihood.  So long as we win I really don't care about them for the time being.

Wait - from the other thread i thought that University of Nazi-Terrorist-Klansmen-Child Molesters was playing MSU, thus making rooting for MSU a valid question. Now, you tell me that U of NTKCM is actually playing Ohio State?  I am soooo confused.

Every year I hope for Michigan and Ohio State to be undefeated heading into The Game.  2006 was a dream come true until it became a nightmare, but if we can play on that stage every year I'd love it.

I don't by the "deflated" argument.  OSU is going to take Michigan seriously regardless of records, but certainly a big10 opener in early October won't have much effect come late November.

Absolutely not.  I bite my tounge and don't pull for the opposition when they play non conference games, but I will be hoping they lose every game for the remainder of the season.

You really think they'd still be "flat" two months later?  They lost to Purdue one month before the Michigan game last year.  I don't think they had any trouble getting focused.
