OT: Rodney King dead at 47

The man who was beaten by LA Police and set off riots in LA back in 1991 is dead.  Found at bottom on pool.

I was in South Central LA on business earlier this week.  Its a pretty scary place.   The conditions seem ripe for another riot.  Hopefully that will not happen, of course...but it is pretty easy to see how it could, the way things are going these days.

Some really classy comments here by some people. I'm always surprised at the disrespect people on MGoBlog show when someone creates a R.I.P. thread. Regardless of how you personally feel about this man, not only was he was a human being with a now mourning family, but he involuntarily played a huge rule in race relations in the early 90's and who knows how much different (for better or worse) this country would've been without him. And if that's not something you're able to acknowledge, at least be mature and use his passing as a oppurtunity to reflect on your own eventual mortality. RIP.

Before Rodney King's incident, there were hundreds if not thousands of minorities that fell victim to the same kind of violence by Police Officers across America without any consequences for the officers. His incident spearheaded procedures that launched investigations when accusations like these arose and it also helped weed out the bad cops in our Police Departments cross America.

and you're obviously not a minority. Nobody called him a hero or a saint, but he was a victim of unnecessary force and Police brutality regardless of what the circumstances were. Cops stood around and took turns beating this man while he layed on the ground helpless. The point was these incidents had been going on for decades and this was the first incident like this that had undeniable video proof.

I AM!!!! And I have been for 16+ years. 20 seconds of cops doing the wrong thing is twenty seconds too many. We are held to a higher standard. Again, my point is there have been legit cases of Police brutality towards completely innocent people because of racist cops or cops having a bad day and when the victims reported the incidents even with multiple witnesses nothing was done. The Rodney King incident forced Departments to investigate these accusations and changed Law Enforcement procedures for the better.

Edit: Seven cops hit King 56 times with batons. High or not dont you think 7 cops could have held him down and handcuffed him?

Agree to disagree and that's what makes this country great! In the end people in a power position sometimes abuse that power. Whether its cops, politicians, bank managers, teachers and the list goes on! Once again if this had been a white guy no race card would have been played nor would it have even made the news. I bet you think OJ was innocent too lol... And I doubt you were ever a cop but hey we can be whatever we want on the world wide web.

Race would not have been an issue, because everyone involved would have been white! And oh yeah, if I was going to lie about my occupation I would not pick being a cop. But hey, since your family members are cops you obviously think that somehow makes you a law enforcement expert. Do yourself a favor, take off the homemade super hero costume, stop bragging to your friends about your pink belt in Karate and leave the real law enforcement to the professionals.

Everything that just happened here is exactly why this blog has a no politics rule. It's also why racial and religious issues should be in that same category.

You doubt someone's employment in law enforcement just because they don't agree with you, then because he/she opposes your view on the King beating, you assume they think OJ is innocent. What the fuck did that have to do with what happened to Rodney King? You sound like a race baiting asshole to me. And by the way, if a person of ANY color was beaten 57 time by seven cops, you can trust and believe it would have made the news, are you fucking kidding me? And one more thing, not all blacks think OJ was innocent in including this one.

After the the LA acquittal, this case went to a federal trial where 2 of those 4 officers were sentenced to 32 months in prison, and their decision was not based off of a few seconds of film.  Oh, and before the federal trial, the LA Mayor and the elder Bush publically decried the actions of those of officers, going as far as saying they were undeserving of being police officers.

I don't believe anyone is saying Rodney King is completely innocent (which he is clearly not), but what we are saying is he was victim of racially charged police brutatility nonetheless...and the federal government agrees.  It certainly seems that you are the one in need of some more facts.

Ya pretty sad day when these cops were innocent in civil court and then people burn down a city and rob their local stores. Which in turn puts pressure on our public figures to push this onto the next level. But hey in CA you don't like the out come of the vote lets just keep appealing until we get it. Same BS is going on in FL

I just saw Rodney King on tv the other day. It was either AH channel or BookTV. Rodney was on a panel about race relations.

Rodney had recently authored a book

I always found Rodney King a likeable person.

I was in socal when he got caught, and when the first trial ended in not guilty verdicts for the cops.  Can't describe the chaos and destruction.  Scary business and we all slept with our sidearms.  Was in trial on a homicide investigation when the verdict came.  Very strange to watch the city burn for a week.

His next two arrests came across my desk too. Political hot potato to say the least.  He got a pass on one and a wrist slap on the other as the powers above didn't want the headache.
Don't wish him bad, and certainly not death, but given what I know about his criminal history I suspect his ME (autopsy) report is going to have some interesting details.

Heard a great NPR piece on Rodney a few weeks on months ago and he really seemed like a man who had turned around his life. Sad to hear of this news.

living his life?  No social commentary meant at all, but having that kind of medai spotlight and the instant name recognition he had?

Sad passing no matter his status in life.  God forbid any of us get caught in that kind of media maelstrom.

Peace Rodney.
