I read this earlier on another forum but didn't want to post anything until I found solid proof. It was confirmed by a friend at Michigan. Brady Hoke's father passed away yesterday. He was battling stage 4 lung cancer.
OT - RIP John Hoke (Coach Hoke's father)
Thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoke family
My condolences, coach. All the best wishes to you and your family.
Cancer is just so evil.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoke family.
Lung cancer is pretty awful stuff; it took my dad about six years ago. His battle was short but incredibly painful, and heartbreaking. Hope it was a different story for Brady's dad. Thoughts and prayers to the Hoke family.
RIP. Thoughts and prayers for coach and his family.
When I first read the subject, I thought it referred to Brady's brother Jon Hoke (who is the DBs coach of the Chicago Bears). That would have been very shocking since he's only one year older than Brady. Can you change the subject to specify that John Hoke was Brady's father?
That's terrible. Hopefully Hoke can take solace knowing how many people are feeling for him during this awful experience.
Tonight we all mourn for the Hoke family.
RIP John. Tough day for Michigan. I hardly consider the passing of Brady Hoke's father to be off-topic.
Condolences to Coach Hoke and his family.
Coach Hoke, you're making your dad proud. Thoughts and prayers with you all.
It's good that he lived long enough to see his son realize his dream. Hopefully, coach is taking some small measure of comfort in that.
...but I'm sure he passed on being very proud of all his kids. Because it's a heck of a family. RIP, and condolences to the family.
He must have been an incredible father to turn out a man like Brady.
Thoughts and prayers with the Hoke family.
that's terrible. RIP.
RIP. Thoughts and prayers for the Hoke family in this trying time.
All Wolverines are with you today, coach.
Condolences to the Hoke family.
What a gift, though, to, in the last year of his life, watch his son achieve his dream job and succeed far beyond the expectations of most sportswriters and fans while being broadly embraced as the new face of Michigan football.
to have raised his kids so well. Like is often said, 'the apple doesn't fall far from the tree', Dad Hoke was very likely a strong and sturdy tree! My condolences to Brady, his wife and kids, and Brady's sibling(s). Rest in peace...
My thoughts and prayers will be with the Hoke family. GB^2
Heard about this yesterday from a friend who works at the hospital but didn't feel comfortable sharing it. Sad, condolences to the entire Hoke family
but at least he saw his son achieve his biggest goal of coaching the U of M and also beating Ohio, and a BCS win. So my prayers will go out to Coach Hoke and his family, but he got to see some great things in his last year.
the entire Hoke family my condolences and a prayer in this time.
Thank you for raising a great leader of men!
My prayers are with you and your family Coach Hoke.
RIP, Thoughts and prayers going out to the Hokes.
Thoughts and prayers with Coach and family. Lost my father just before last Christmas and it still hurts. Friends, family and memories are the best medicine.
Thank you for giving us your son as our coach. You were quite clearly a good father. Rest in peace!
Thoughts and prayers to the Hoke family
R.I.P. At least he got to witness a year of his son living his dream of coaching Michigan. Condolences to the family. I know Hoke is gonna make his dad proud.
Love and prayers for the hoke family. John Hoke raised a fine man, so I have to think that he was one as well. I am sure he will be missed . . . .
God Bless, fergodsakes.
EDIT: Just a thought, but do you think Brian would include a small mention of Mr. Hoke's passing in HTTV if we ponyed up additional funding for the project? (hope that doesn't sound capitalistic or ghoulish)
Condolences to the entire Hoke family.
RIP... You raised one hell of a coach, and most importantly, one hell of a man. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoke family.
RIP. As a father i can only imagine the pride he must have felt watching Brady last year fulfill his dream.
my heart and thoughts go to the Hokes... God bless
My thoughts are with Coach Hoke and his family. RIP
Prayers for the Hoke's. My grandfather recently died from lung related issues. As tragic as it is to lose them, Its good to know the second to second struggle to breath is over. Rest easy sir.
the Hoke family. Imagine how happy he must have been for his son this last season. It certainly won't make things easier now, but it might bring solace in the future.
Losing your parent is so tough, especially assuming its a long and painful proces. But the silver lining is what you said, seeing his son reach the apex of his career. God bless and Go Blue
The Hoke family is in my prayers.
Sounds like he led a tremendous life. Prayers to the Hoke family.
My thoughts and prayers to Coach Hoke and his family. RIP Mr Hoke.
And may your father rest in peace.
Lost my father to cancer 20 years ago this week. It is a strange pain that is hard to explain.
Thoughts and prayers coach.
Take all the time you need, B
Big Ups to Mr. Hoke for fathering a child who would later go on to coach our beloved football program. He raised a good man. Double Hoke Point towards the sky on that one.
I hope and pray Coach Hoke can get through this difficult time. Hopefully he can be comforted by the fact that his father got to see him obtain his dream position and have a very successful first season.
RIP. My thoughts are with coach Hoke and his family.
rest in peace, awesome to know how much this job meant to john when brady was hired, sure seems he taught his son all
RIP to John and prayers to the Hoke family
I'd like to think that Mr. Hoke is sitting down right now with Bo enjoying a cold beer and making fun of Woody for punching that kid during the Gator Bowl.
Rest in Peace, John. Thoughts and prayers to the entire Hoke family. He must have been a great man to raise and instill in Coach Hoke such solid principles.
It sounds like the family probably got to say goodbyes if he was at that stage but its always tough. Prayers for Coach Hoke and family...
Having lost my own father to Cancer as a teenager, I feel for Coach Hoke and his family. In life, sometimes we try to "prepare" ourselves when a loved one is terminally ill, but as much as we try to "prepare" ourselves, you never are "ready" to lose a loved one. Even though Coach Hoke is in his 50's, it's still a tough thing for a son to deal with losing his father, no matter the age. My thoughts and prayers are with the Hoke family.
May God rest him and keep him safe.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Hoke family.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoke family.
Thoughts and prayers to the Hoke family. At least he got to see his son fulfill his dream.
It's always tough to lose a parent. Hang in there, Coach.
Condolences to the Hoke family and their friends and thanks to John Hoke for raising a man of the utmost integrity and character.
to the Hoke family!
as well as condolences to the friends, acquaintences, and family of Mr. Hoke, and of course to you too, Coach Hoke...
and the entire Hoke family
May Mr. Hoke Rest In Peace...
...may our players practice in his memory and practice harder than they ever have in their lives this spring.
RIP. Condolences to Coach Hoke & family.
Coach Hoke, we love you and our prayers are with you. Must have been one hell of a father and man judging by how you turned out. At least he got to see his boy fulfill his dreams and coach a spectacular season at Michigan before he passed.
If Coach Hoke is any reflection on how good this man was as a father, then he had to have been a goddamn good father. Thoughts and prayers to the family.
Rest in peace, Mr. Hoke. Prayers for the whole Hoke family.
My thoughts are with Hoke and his family. His father will be watching over him and this team and be proud, I'm sure of it.
My thoughts and prayers for the Hoke family and friends.
My condolences to the Hoke family
I just wanted to pass along the condolences from Spartan Nation:
Sorry for your loss Coach Hoke.
The up-votes are from the original title "Coach Hoke's Father Dies." And half of the posts have been deleted.
An unfortunate loss the Hoke family.
RIP John. Cancer took my dad 13 years ago. Stomach cancer and when the docs opened up dad to take a look, they closed him right back up. It had spread to the liver, gall bladder and intestines. Two weeks in a hospice and no more. The last hour with my dad was spent watching a Jim Brown special. Football was a bonding experience for him and myself.
I lost my mom to lung cancer in Dec. A mere 20 days after she was diagnosed. It's still hard to deal with. My thoughts and prayers to the whole Hoke clan.
Rest in peace. I'm sure he was one hell of a guy. Their family is in my thoughts and prayers.
I've always wanted to give Brady Hoke a hug, and today is no exception.
well, am not kidding when I say this but after seeing papa Hoke's interview after Brady's first press conference, I wanted to hug papa Hoke instead, for a fine job he did raising our coach.
My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Hoke and his family. May peace and comfort bless him and his family.
But I can't imagine a much better time to go. You've just watched your son achieve his number one goal in life, beat Ohio State, win the Sugar Bowl and cement the Hoke family name in the pages of history for ... well... forever. When it's time for me to go, I hope I can feel even a fraction as satisfied with my life and the legacy my family will leave.
Hoke. RIP Sir.

May your soul rise like a lion.
for your loss Coach Hoke.
Sorry for your loss Coach Hoke. I'll be remembering you and your family in my prayers tonight.
Rest In Paradise Mr. Hoke and may the good Lord bring peace to the family. Mr.John Hoke has definitely left a legacy to be proud of in the seeds he has planted.
Thoughts and prayers go out to Coach Hoke and his family. I lost my dad to lung cancer at a young age. Spent over six months driving back and forth to Butterworth to spend time with him. A horrible disease indeed.
Must be very hard to lose your father. I can only thank God today that the relationships within my family are strong; an unconditional bond. I lost my grandfather a few months ago to lymphoma, and I assure you there was much grief and despair followed by a rekindled strength and unity that I can only hope finds its way into the Hoke family.
I'm sure this unfortunate situation has reached the team as well, and I hope/pray the residual by products of loss will evoke a strong sense of unification and passion in Hoke and Team 133.
Thoughts and prayers to the entire family.
My thougths and best wishes are with him and his family during this hard time. Any father who could have someone like Coach Hoke as a son must have been a great father and a great man.
Earlier this week UMH as only they could were able to get my father from a pretty bad outlook to a thoroughly livable one, i.e. thanks to the University of Michigan there's still the possibility he'll live to be a tenth as proud of me as Brady's father surely was of him. In triumph and in loss, go blue.
Lifting your family up in prayer now
Spartan fan here offers condolences on your loss.
RIP John Hoke
I saw an interview with papa Hoke after Brady's inaugural press conference, and he was just done crying, and he said a few tremendous words.... "Don't worry.....he'll win" as matter-of-factly..... that stuck with me, and was when I thought that this dude and wife did a heck of a job raising his kids. The words didnt necessarily make me think that but I felt good about those words. RIP
Thank you for making Coach Hoke who he is today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hoke family.
