The great Michigan businessman passed away tonight from a brain hemorrhage. He was 91.
keep him and his family in peace.
Ive always wondered if the Fred Meyer stores out here in Washington are related to the Meijers out there.
Fred Meyer is under the Kroger banner.
How did he not sue the piss out of them.
Good old Fred. My great grandpa delivered produce to meijer's when Fred himself was the one unloading trucks. Best wishes to his family.
Was always cool growing up in the town of the first "meijer" (greenville, mi) Hopefully his sons will continue the battle against Walmart in the greatlakes region.
hey, im from crystal!! (carson city for high school in case you never made it that way)
When I was growing up (just off the west end of Crystal Lake on Colby Road), we used to make our weekly trek to Meijer Thrifty Acres in Greenville. Of course, as a kid we had our silly nicknames for it; we called it 'Meijer Shifty Acres'.
A few years ago, my parents were at a Christmas Party at, believe it or not, an Amish farm in Greenville and met Fred there. From all accounts, Fred was a great businessman *and* a great person.
I just wish he had extended the Meijer chain down here to Alabama.
He did so much for the Grand Rapids area, it's a shame to see him go. Rest in peace Freddy.
I don't know about anyone else but I rode the shit out of Sandy back in the day.
Goes crazy every time she sees this horse. Plus they only charge you 1 cent to ride it. Very nice.
If I'm impatient and don't wait for the pictures to load while browsing mgoblog on my phone, this post goes an entirely different direction.
I've got three boys and this horse got a lot of our pennies. Where else can you get anything for one cent?
Same price 30+ years ago. Kinda feel like I got ripped off.
But I can't. It's too sad. I will have to wear a black band when I head down there to pick up pre-game munchies in the morning.
I still ride her when I get the chance
That's a damn shame, RIP, Fred.
He ran Meijer as well as any company I can think of. May he RIP
I worked at Meijer's one summer. A lot of places give lip service to being a "family business" with "values", but Meijer's was really that way because of Fred.
RIP Mr Meijer from a former employee
I have the unique opportunity of being about equidistant from the stores in Belleville and Taylor in Wayne County, and I like Meijer enough that I always have trouble deciding.
RIP, Fred. Your stores are just that good. Thoughts to the family and employees of the company.
