Looks like it was cardiac arrest...very sad news. He'll be remembered for coaching the Vikings and Cardinals in the NFL...but he also was head coach at Northwestern and Stanford in the 80s/early 90s.

It always seemed like Green's time at the college level got lost in the discussion, but he was Big Ten Coach Of The Year in 1982 with Northwestern. The other thing you hear from a lot of players who played for him was that he was one of the better motivators out there too, the sort of person which isn't easy to find per se but is so valuable in a sport like football.

RIP Coach Green.

RIP Dennis Green. That meltdown after the Bears game was epic. I remember I went to bed at halftime because I had to be up at 4am the next day. Was very surprised when I saw the final score.

Everyone is remembering his epic Bears rant, and that came to my mind too.

It's a bit of a shame, because Green was a long-tenured coach that produced teams like the magnificent 1998 Vikings. He was quite good.

But that rant is just sooooo quotable...

I was a Viking season ticket holder, I gave up my seats when Denny got canned. I enjoyed him and thought he did a great job keeping large egos together. It's hard to believe that he could keep Cris Carter and Randy Moss happy with only one football, especially with the washed up QB play he usually had.

Its always surprising to see a coach that I, more or less, watched while in my prime.  Never considered that he'd be 67 by now.  His teams were usually pretty good, always solid in fundamentals, and competitive.  Maybe not always championship quality, but competitive nonetheless.  RIP, coach.  I'm sure you're still better than some of the guys running NFL teams today...

I expected the Vikings to suck every year but But The Nutty Professor made sure they didn't. His biggest crime was not winning the SB (or getting to it, I guess) and for that he was fired. RIP Dennis Green.

Damn, this is sad news. DG was an awesome coach and never appreciated as much as he should have been in MN.  I was living there at the time and his teams were excellent.  I moved to Atlanta the year before the Vikings missed going to the Superbowl with a missed field goal kick.  They should have been there!

Everyone remembers the kick, but what still makes me angry is the fact that Robert Smith, who was supposed to be the smartest palyer in the nfl, ran out of bounds twice when we were trying to run out the clock. The Falcons would not have had time to tie the game if that frickin' buckeye didn't run out of bounds twice. Should have had Leroy Hoard in the game.

I drink to forget the 1999 NFC championship game.

And Fuck you bob smith.

I really liked Dennis Green always thought the Vikings were wrong to fire him after the 2001 season. Best quote They were the team they thought they were and we let them off the hook.
